Just a quick answer session here, since some of the posts in this thread are nothing short of shocking.
First- Yes, this was fanfest you were watching.
Second- Yes, we got to play Halo 2 multiplayer. No, you didn't see anyone playing it. Halo 2 was kept in the same rooms where the press were seeing it. There is no specific Halo 2 booth at E3 this year. Instead, there are three private rooms in the Microsoft press area that during E3 are open only to pre-made appointments.
During Fanfest, they led us back in groups of 30 to play a full game of Spartan vs Covenant CTF, in the same map you've seen in all the shaky cam footage, Zanzabar.
Third- The stuff played on the big screen included a special Fanfest 2k4 Red vs Blue video, the Halo 2 announcement trailer, and the E32k3 demo movie, as well as the X03 documentary. Why the old footage, you ask? Because to a Bungie fan, this stuff is cool.
Fourth- No, seriously, you didn't see anyone playing Halo 2, until they ran through their rehearsed demonstration of multiplayer, the one most of you have seen shakycam footage of.
Most of the kiosks were swiched over to Halo multiplayer. If it didn't look like Halo, it might not've been. I put some time into Mech Assault 2, and friends played Advent Rising and Silent Hill 4. I say again- Halo 2 was not out on the showfloor, other than the demonstration on the big screen.
Last for now- That period of time where everyone was at the bottom of the camera's view was the Bungie raffle. The person they got to hand out the prizes was hot. H-A-W-T, hot.
