Subject: I Need Your Guidance. Best Way to go About Learning the Halo Universe?

Alright, so I watched the Halo Anniversary Terminals last night which were awesome. But it made it clear that I am extremely unfamiliar with most of the terminology outside of the games (I have not read the books). I went on Halo.wikia and learned as much as I could about the Didact, Librarian, Human-Forerunner war etc. It was so interesting.

So here is my question, which order should I go about reading the books, and I mean ALL the books. I really am interested in this universe now and would love to really learn it.

First off if you really want to learn stop reading the wikis for actual knowledge.

Book wise read the four main books; The Fall of Reach,The Flood,First strike, Ghost of onyx.

After that Glasslands is set after Onyx but you are going to need to read all the other books to really get it. Order of that doesn't matter.

Makes sure you read the halo 3 terminals (this is what halopedian is good for), Google "Wiki bruce IRIS" and read the info about the halo 3 ARG.

That is really it. the books are a tremendous part of understand the lore. After you read the books use halopedia to look up information about the ships and such; but since you've read the books you'll see why many people that know there stuff hate halopedian.

Thanks, what about the new book Cryptum? Read it last I presume? and what about the Cole Protocol and Contact Harvest?

Cole Protocol, Contact Harvest and Evolutions can be read in any order after you read those first four books, but before Glasslands. Cryptum can be read before or after Glasslands, but since the second book in the Cryptum series comes out in January it might be helpful to read that one just before the next one comes out, but it's probably not that big an issue.

Also when reading the first 3 books, I'd say try to get the newer "definitive editions" if at all possible as there are a few errors and fixed and contradictions corrected with various things that have sprung up over the years.

Another thing that might help a bit (especially with things that would seem like contradictions, but also just for a nice bit of new info that wasn't known before) is to try to get Halsey's Journal that came with the collector's edition and legendary edition of Halo Reach. It's a nice looking and well made little collectible in it's own right, but it also has a nice amount of new info.

Along those lines the Halo Waypoint website also released some data drops that helped to mend(successfully or unsuccessfully depending on who you talk to) some continuity issues that were still prevalent between the events in the Fall of Reach novel and the Halo Reach game. I'm pretty sure you can find those just by searching this forum.

As for the Halo 3 terminals, another great source to read them and about them and IRIS would be here: http://blog.ascendantjustice.com/halo-3/the-terminals/

If your really just starting off now I would say just get cryptum since the next book is coming out in january, this way you'll be on par with everybody else.

So for right now get cryptum, read the terminals and IRIS. But if you have the money to get everything now then do so.

just ignore this and listen to the advice above; don't depend on halopedian whatsoever.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

Read the books, and for any other questions, look them up on the internet or just ask them here.

Just about all of the books are well-written, and are woth just as much as books to any Sci-fi as to any Halo fan. If you want to learn some things you never knew about the campaign before, read The Flood. It's based on the original Halo game, yet reveals some things you would have never known about the survivors of the POA if you just played the game, like the story of Alpha Base. If you're interested in stand-alone stories and don't want to get too confised about the spartans in general, read Ghosts of Onyx. Most will probably say hat you need to read the Fall of Reach, but it's not absolutely neccesary. Cryptum was by far my favorite novel, up there in therms of having an entertaining and intersting story line with The Flood and Ghosts of Onyx.
I [u]highly[/i] suggest that you read the Halo 3 terminals before you read crytum and if you read them once, read them again. Even though Cryptum ends on a cliffhangar, it has a satisfactory ending and seems like a comepletly different story than that in Halo in general.

Why are you here?

Halopedia, and the books. Also Terminals.

Not to mention the games.

  • 11.15.2011 4:47 PM PDT

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

I would read the novels and pay attention to the campaigns. (except for reach's, that destroys canon)

  • 11.15.2011 4:55 PM PDT

Halopedia has much less speculation and is more up to date than Halo Nation...

play nice y have fun

By the way, where can I find(if there is any solid source) good info explaining Jericho VII?

I'm not familiar with the Halo 3 ARG. Is it canon?

I guess a better question is, does it explain anything that Halo3/whatever else that has come out since then, didn't?
