I know the above quote has various incarnations in the Marathon series, but (being 8 at the original release of Halo) it reminded me most of a line from Halo: The Flood, of which my copy has been lost for a number of years. Could someone go through their copy and find the part (near the beginning) where the Master Chief interacts with a Forerunner control panel to extend a light bridge? In the game this would be the next section after rescuing the first life boat of marines on the second level.

In Vino Veritas

"The display's shimmering geometric patterns nagged at him, as if he should recognize them somehow. Even with his enhanced memory, he couldn't place where he'd seen them before. They just seemed . . . familiar."

"He wasn't sure why he touched the "button" on the display. He just knew it felt right."

"She paused, then added, "How did you know what control to push?"
"I didn't."

Those are the quotes related to the Marathon quote.

I believe the above makes much more sense after reading cryptum. It may have felt natural to touch the button because Chief has a forerunner geas inside him and the buttons seemed familiar to the geas (certain part of chief's genetic code).

This adds to the significance of Chief being a reclaimer.

A Gea was implied by an elite within the first pages of "The Flood". It was there this entire time...

Clearly if old news is new then yes.

Where was this stated? I've read all the books other than The Flood and First Strike. Random comics and Legends I haven't bothered to look at either. I'm guessing it's in one of those somewhere...?

The whole geas concept is from Cryptum, from what it seems. And the line the OP was referring to was in The Flood, when the Chief opens the light bridge to cross the chasm in the second level.

Yeah, I get that.. Just have no idea where it's stated that the Chief has one... because it isn't in Cryptum.

Ahh. I've got to buy that book soon so I can just finish the whole Cov - Human war period.

Oh, I thought that's what you were asking.

Then I imagine it has to be in Glasslands if it's not in Cryptum. I still need to get both -__-

All good :)

Not in Glasslands either haha. I got that on release. (You should get Cyptum first though. It's much better than Glasslands).

We are all going to get banned aren't we?

Lets use common sense.

De-evolved humans had a Geas implanted in them Current humanity rose from said humans.

Thus the Gea was genetically passed down unless implanted in current humanity. Not a hard concept to understand.

How is that common sense?

There was like 100,000+ years between the de-evolved humans and the humans that are in the game. Is it not stated the geas only last a generation or two? Not to mention (by memory) only two humans had a geas implanted.

you need to read cryptum more than however many times you already have.

Common sense being if every source says he has a Geas then he has one along other people with similar genetic traits.

Cryptum takes place during the forerunner-flood war which is 10,000 years after the human involved ones; and humans still have Gea. chakas and Riser are not the only humans to have Gea all humans have it along with forerunners (implied).

You really need to re-read cryptum. Chief having a Gea has been implied since day one.

First time I've heard of it specifically.

Yeah, it's been a while. I was planning to re-read it another couple of times before the sequel anyway. :)

Direct proof
"I must verify the presence and pitch of your gea before allowing full access" - 343 GS, Halo CEA terminal 1

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3wxsjV6IWY 1:46

It's also implied in cryptum, since the librarian implanted geas'in the remnants of ancient humanity on erde-tyrene, and modern humanity is obviously descended from some of these survivors.

As for the line within the first few pages of the flood implying a gea (from what grey says), I don't remember this at all but I only deduced the link after reading cryptum.

Its within the first 30 pages and it is from the covenant point of view.

And elite is talking about how all lifeforms seekout forerunner relics in commenting how the humans found halo.

I had a mindgasm after reading that with cryptum knowledge.

I feel like 343 was just staying true and reinforcing what was already established. that is why i was so astonished because alot of that type of stuff is referenced in the main books.
