Yeah I only do it in super obvious cases like these. Honestly, the OP was just a picture of a male genitalia.
I think you did the right thing. I just think you should do it more often with blatant troll threads. I don't think you need a picture of a male genitalia to know someone is trolling.

But I guess it is a personal thing.

smart, interesting, seems out of place.

Official fan of Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, (Problem with that?) Halo, and Bungie, also a total gaming junkie.

Qbix strikes again... That sexy bastard. And it is called a "carpet ban," not a "blanket ban." Carpet ban makes it sound so much more badass.

I salute you Qbix. It needs to be done more often.

I sense the WHAAAMBULANCE forum getting more active in the near future. I'm a psychic; I know these things.

I think it'd be difficult to set a minimum threshold of when a carpet ban should take place, ergo making them consistent.

You can also break the speed limit in your car every day. Then one day you get pulled over and given a nice fine. Would that be inconsistent?

My personal opinion is that doing them as one offs ever now and then are not fair. If you could reply to spam ever day of a month and not get banned, and then one day you just do, it doesn't really make sense and seems inconstant.

They should blanket ban this thread for the laughs.

I think blanket bans should be used more often as it would discourage people from being idiots.

Why would you cite that as an example of a controversial carpet ban worthy of the discussion of whether or not they're useful/should be used?

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

No, they shouldn't.

I know posting on a spam thread is against the rules but it happens all the time and 73 people just got screwed.

(assuming everyone other than Qbix and OP posted once).

Oh well, at least this kind of things is rare.

Well played

But are mods allowed to speed too?

Anyway I understand why everyone was banned, I guess if it is TOO obvious it is grounds for a ban.

But sometimes it is hard to tell if it is a troll thread.

But, guess that is another thing to worry about.

Ken. Ken. Listen. It is not just about it being spam. It is about it being the most obvious spam/bad thread you can find. We use it extremely rarely.

Yes, the mods are allowed to go a little further than we. For example, to pull over a car that is speeding, the police have to go over the speed limit as well (in most cases).

"But sometimes it is hard to tell if it is a troll thread." Oh really? If in doubt, just don't post.

Your analogy doesn't apply because mods have no need to break the rules to facilitate enforcing the rules, which is very unlike the speeding example.

I just don't think Blanket bans should be used that much.

But I can see that it was needed for that thread becuase it was such an obvious troll.

But since it is also so rarely done, some people may get caught up in it.

Yes, Righteous, it doesn't work well. I was using the analogy of police is to mods as speeders are to users-who-reply-to-stupid--blam!-. I didn't think much when answering Ken's question of "are mods allowed to speed too?" so I kept with the analogy.

I understand your analogy but also think about all the time cops don't pull over people who speed or let people off with a warning.

But lets let that die.

A carpet ban was needed becuase it was so obvious and there was nothing to discuss that would of been on topic and not break any rules.

Touche, but what I was trying to get at with the speeding analogy was that just because a lot of people do it doesn't mean it's fine, which is what you seemed to argue.

I think a blanket ban is a good practice because it enforces a no-tolerance police towards replying to stupid -blam!-, which I think should happen. I don't even go to the Reach forums now because of the deluge of brain numbing -blam!- that permeated it for the longest time. Then again, I'm a cynical -blam!-.

Whatever, I'm just a fool.

This is literally the only carpet-ban I've ever been online for. If the thread hadn't been made about it, I still wouldn't have known of one. I mean, I haven't been here long, but even still... There's no reason to complain about them. Don't post in threads called "I have a big dick".

If you do, you deserve a ban. Clear and simple.
