There's no such thing as a blanket ban. As qbix said in the thread he banned everyone replying to spam, he had to ban each member individually.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

Your analogy doesn't apply because mods have no need to break the rules to facilitate enforcing the rules, which is very unlike the speeding example.
Kinda what I was thinking. I mean, don't get me wrong, Ken is still very wrong. But the argument against him isn't helping the correct side.

I just don't think Blanket bans should be used that much.

But I can see that it was needed for that thread becuase it was such an obvious troll.

But since it is also so rarely done, some people may get caught up in it.

But oh well.
This is literally the only carpet-ban I've ever been online for. If the thread hadn't been made about it, I still wouldn't have known of one. I mean, I haven't been here long, but even still... There's no reason to complain about them. Don't post in threads called "I have a big dick".

If you do, you deserve a ban. Clear and simple.

Yeah I know, I think I have stated I agree with the carpet ban for this thread for like 2-3 posts.

I have seen like 3 or 4 carpet bans.

They are good if the topic breaks a lot of rules and no one is on topic.

But it should ONLY be for serious instances like this and thankfully most of the time they are.

I play for fun and armory completion. :)

Carpet bans are unfair in my opinion. These are message boards, if the replies were not offensive besides being in a spam topic, I don't think that warrants a ban.

Carpet bans are still funny as hell if you're not caught in one though.

My Worst Bungie moment: not seeing giant stuffie grunts in the Bungie store.

Replying to spam is against the rules, though.

I understand this logic, and I used to share it, however I started looking at it differently. When someone posts in a spam thread, it bumps it to the top of the forum for more people to see. If a thread is as offensive as to warrant the user who posted it to be banned, then everyone in the thread who contributed to the thread gaining so much "popularity" or views should be at least warned.

That's just how I see it.

I know, my post is basically saying that unless under extreme circumstances, replying to spam is basically an arbitrarily enforced rule. I've seen it enforced only a few times, and I know I would be fairly angry to be caught up in a carpet ban.

I understand the logic behind it, it does bump the thread to the top, if it was consistently enforced, I would not mind, but when most spam threads are just locked and then all of a sudden everyone who replied to it is banned, that is unfair in my eyes.

“Strange,” mused the Director, as they turned away, “strange to think that even in Our Ford’s day most games were played without more apparatus than a ball or two and a few sticks and perhaps a bit of netting. imagine the folly of allowing people to play elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption.”

The Black Chapter!

Maybe if there were more blanket bans for replying to crap, the flood would be slightly less rubbish at not feeding trolls.

I recall blanket bans across 2-3 dozen porch threads one night.

It's a sign that a particular ninja hits their personal tolerance limit and says, "okay, funtime is over, time for me to remind people that this isn't a litterbox."

Members hit their personal tolerance limit all of the time, and they make a "______ should be a bannable topic" thread. Ninjas have a similar limit, but are equipped to react differently. I don't consider it a bad thing. It certainly is cathartic.

*waits for those who had to Google* You're back? Good. I will continue.

Those who want consistency, I believe that they don't realize what they are asking for. Because a blanket ban is what we're capable of doing for each and every bit of nonsense we encounter. The fact if we were literal and basically an "if this, then that" human script, the blanket bans would be everywhere. Yeah, you don't want THAT consistency.

These are the times where people need to realize that when we're "at ease", we're being tolerant and pretty cool cats. As Dr. Banner once said, "You don't want to see me angry. You won't like it."

Appreciate our ability to relax and watch the kiddies rolling in the mud, dirt and sand. But when we decide that "enough is enough", that is not the time to cry.

You won't believe the number of "I wus unfarely bant" PM's that I got for people who were whining about a 3 day. I banned myself for a week to try to demonstrate that a ban is nothing more and nothing less than what it is supposed to be. A time out to review the rules and reconsider your interpretation of them. That anyone who cries and wants "this horrid black mark stricken from the record, I was only being lulzy!" needs to step back and gather some much needed perspective.

Well, back to being tolerant and waiting until I've "had enough"..... tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock..... boo!

Do you think blanket bans are fair AND should they be used more / less often than they currently are?

Drop the bomb. Exterminate them all.

Replying to spam happens all too often.

I'll agree with for those who seem to feel the need to post nonsense.

I think they should be done more often. I use my alt in the Flood more than I use this one, and I have seen A LOT of spam, as has anyone else who likes to hang out in there.

And the Shadow fell upon the Land, and the World was riven stone from stone. The oceans fled, and the mountains were swallowed up, and the nations were scattered to the eight corners of the World. All was shattered, and all but memory lost, and one memory above all others, of him who brought the Shadow and the Breaking of the World. And him they named Dragon.

Let's be honest with ourselves here, fellas. Qbix just hates the Flood, clearly, and he's out to destroy it.

Blamket bans are like zero tolerance policies in schools.

If I bring hard drugs or weapons to school, chances are I really don't care about being expelled. If I bring Advil or a Nerf gun to school, I can't possibly harm anyone. But under zero tolerance policies I would get expelled just like someone who brought a real gun.

The people they hurt most are the ones who don't deserve it.

We want consistency, not necessarily strictness.

Why can't we do what real courts do (you know, when there's a lot more than a forum ban on the line)? Define terms like "not safe for work", "inappropriate", etc. so that we actually have something to go on?
