How does a view counter improve the forums? Its a rather useless feature, imo.

On December 1st, 2012, I met Neil deGrasse Tyson. I shook the man's hand, and even made him laugh. Not much else to do with my life now.

We could have much better features then that.

It could help trolls know how many people have read their topic and encourage them to post more topics... wait... that's a bad thing isn't it?

Anything can be abused. People abuse the ability to post; should we remove it to ensure no trolls at all?

I like the ability to see view counts in all of the other forums that I visit. This could be useful.

Many things can be abused; but you should ask if it will bring more harm then good. To emulate your second sentence, I say: moderators ban people to keep the forums clean; so should we hand the ban hammer to all members?

If you'd like to persuade me of your opinion, I suggest you tell me why you think a counter will cause more good then harm, instead of presuming I use flawed reasoning.

Regardless, a view count could be another interesting way of potentially discovering popular content.

Honestly, I see no reason for a view counter to be implemented because in reality it's a useless feature. Not that many people truly benefit from having such a feature. Would it be cool? Yes. Is it necessary? Certainly not.

I don't see how it would be cool.

It just shows how many people clicked your topic and weren't interested enough to post.

"Cool," in the sense of, "Oh, 600 people viewed my thread, that's neat."

  • 11.16.2011 8:19 PM PDT

Key

Why do I give two [poop]s how many views a thread (or MY thread) gets? The point of a forum is to promote discussion. Views doesn't proMote discussion, it promotes false indications of popularity due to an inflated method of measuring the communities reaction to a thread.

They do nothing, other than tell me that 20 of you -blam!-s looked at my thread and didn't post in it. :P

Popular content gets replied to. Mediocre content gets viewed and clicked away from. Plus, view counts are easily manipulated by the OP. I once sat on the 343i forums refreshing a page of my most recent thread to see how many views I could get before getting a response (245).

Or how many people viewed it and didn't have anything to post, didn't want to post, noticed that someone else had posted what they were going to post, weren't logged in, didn't want to add to the deluge of pointless "good thread" style posts, etc...

Interestingly enough, the last point is somewhat interesting, because those kinds of posts don't encourage discussion at all. So how do you avoid them whilst simultaneously providing a mechanism to indicate whether a topic might be interesting?

A rating system of course; but I don't like the sound of that either. I would rather read though the "good point", "lol" or "nice thread" posts then have a thumbs up, rating or view count system. Maybe I'm just old school; but I don't like the way it turned out for websites like Youtube.

What do you think of the deviantart emoticon rating system? It seems to work well for picture, who says it wouldn't work for posts?
