Subject: Why the hate towards reach?

i actually never bought reach (as you can see if you look at my service record) mainly because after the beta came out i kinda lost interest in video games for a while. so i havent been on these forums in a while. when i left the forums in the summer of 2010 everybody was happy and exited for the new game and then i come back and everyone hates reach and says its awful! WHAT HAPPENED! having found my love for video games especially halo (which is one of my favorite game frachises ever) again i want to buy the game (yes i know its late but i figure ill get a year out of it) but now im confused as to all this hate towards reach?

i never bought reach but ive played it alot at friends houses and stuff and ive always really liked it. im not a huge fan of AA's but i dont really mind them. and i really enjoyed the single player too. so why did this game "fail" in the eyes of this community? was it bloom? or AA's? or something else that i have to buy the game and experiance for my self?

It's a little bit of everything you listed but to really understand you need to play it and experience it yourself.

everyone hates the bloom, AAs, Maps, and the game physics

  • 11.16.2011 8:25 PM PDT

its sad

A little of all that you guessed. I'll go ahead and go into detail.

Reticle bloom: Reticle bloom had good intentions, but it wasn't put in correctly. It doesn't stop spammers with the DMR. In fact, spamming is now more effective then ever, taking from the skill gap. People who try to pace there shots to maintain accuracy just simply get spammed down. Every DMR battle is now just a simple game of luck, whoever gets that first lucky headshot. The bloom will screw someone over, and there's no way to control who. So no skill.

AAs: These have utterly ruined balance. Halo was always about having everyone start on equal grounds and perfectly fair. Now, AAs are there, and will bail people out of a bad situation, making room for mistakes, and therefore, less skill. Active camo was a powerup and should of stayed a powerup. Armor lock is honestly the stupidest idea ever conceived in a halo game.

Reach has no skill, just luck. And therefore, it's a frusterating game that has driven all the skilled players off.

KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!!

Aside from all the gameplay stuff, they really screwed over the campaign. I adamantly read all the books, and during the events on Reach, Chief was out in space (WITH CORTANA) fighting alien ships, using Longswords to bomb open Covie shields while he slipped in and bombed the -blam!- out of it from the inside and made the explosion bounce off the inside of the shields... it was nuts. And then Reach turns around and says that some chumps called "Noble Team" met the Covenant first (BS, the space fleet did), Hasley was never that much of a b****, Cortana was never away from the Chief, the list goes on.

Some other bad stuff:
- Bad weapons for the most part (getting rid of the Beam Rifle made that one scene where a certain someone gets sniped complete BS)
- Vehicles suck: snipers and DMRs are retardedly turned into anti-vehicle guns because for some reason rockets, plasma launchers, fuel rods, and grenade launchers aren't good enough (not to mention the fact that they removed more anti-vehicle things like Trip Mines, Power Drains, and especially Missile Pods)
- Banshee is overpowered: have to actually switch between Banshee bomb and plasma guns, plasma guns are weak and not worth using (thus everyone switches to the bomb and never uses the gun)
- Low vehicle diversity
- Armour abilities
- No equipment
- Lack of medium filler weapons (like SMGs, Maulers, etc.)
- No dual-wielding
- Armour lock
- Loadouts (classes, whatever you want to call them)
- Less realistic graphics compared to Halo 3
- Glitches like Juggernaut settings being broke

That's just a few.

Agreed. Campaign broke canon. The covenant got on Reach and know one knew until Noble team saw them? Yeah, no. Graphics are terribly dull and colorless. It's like my guy is colorblind to everything except a sickly green on scarcely spread bushes and trees, and an ugly, burnt orange on the walls of these ugly buildings. Everything else is pretty much gray.

Multiplayer is the most BS, luck based, repetitive, noob filled, terribly ranked, BS ban filled, bag of crap I've ever played, and the point of other features such as Firefight are taken away. Firefight was about survival, and involved a massive amount of improvising with the different guns, especially when Famine and Mythic made ammo an issue. Now it's just the following: set it to spawn with a bottomless clip rocket and sniper and make yourself invincable and fast and set all the enemies to nearsighted, deaf grunts on easy difficulty and never turn on skulls.

People have to hate on something I guess.

  • 11.16.2011 11:23 PM PDT

Personally, I loved the graphics and I thought there was a huge range of colours. I loved the campaign and the new, beastly Elites, especially when they charged at you with an Energy Sword. I personally liked the fact that Bungie took a break from Master Chief, he was getting me bored. I like that you can actually change the settings in Firefight. I play with 'hax' ( ultra-noob game settings) just for the blood and alien screams. :D

You wanna know why people hate Reach?

Because Bungie listened to the community. The community is full of idiots who know nothing about game design. If Bungie hadn't listened to the community, it'd would have been a much better.

Because hating Halo Reach is cool, but disliking anything about Glasslands makes you a horrible person.

hahahahaha epic. But sadly: true.

There is nothing fundamentally wrong with Reach. It's a great game, and also a real Halo game. If you don't feel it's a Halo game something's a bit off to be honest...it has all the classic elements of Halo minus a focus on Forerunners. That being said the story isn't without it's flaws and the multiplayer is good except for many of the original maps being kind of mediocre (Noble, Defiant and Anniversary mappacks are really great however!) and the inclusion of some of the AA's like Armor Lock.
Now with the TU coming and Anniversary eliminating the AA's you will see the Reach multi actually is really good.

But like Cmdr also said: there are some who were very vocal in their critisism on Reach and a vast majority just followed that blindly: hating on Reach is cool. Don't let people convince you it's a bad game. It's not. It's just a different take on Halo, just like ODST was a different take on Halo, and to be honest: it's a nice break from the trend of the main series.

No. Something isn't off with me. It does in no way feel like a Halo game to me. Believe it or not but ODST does. "real Halo game" this annoys me heaps. How can you say that. Do you have any reasons? (Not trying to start anything here)

No, Anniversary gametypes still have AA's and bloom in them. I havn't played Reach online (properly), in almost 3 months.

"Hating on reach makes you cool" Yeh, totally. Only idiots think they are cool because they wrote something on the Internet. I actually give reasoning for my hatred of it as a Halo game.

Just think about this. Halo: Reach is packed with new features. Firefight is fully customizable. Much better custom game options. New weapons. Tonnes better forge. New file browsing features. Alot more armour. New gametypes. Special gametypes. And much more. Now think about this. Why do I still like every other Halo better? Why do I still dislike it?

I loved the campaign and the new, beastly Elites, especially when they charged at you with an Energy Sword.

Thanks for reminding me: they claim to have "much better AI that are 'incredibly smart'" but as it turns out, New Bungie's idea of "smart" actually translates to "hopping a lot." They aren't smart, they just bounce all over the place and dodge everything. If you really want some frikkin scary smart AI, go play Crysis and fight 4 invisible Ceph at once. They will tactically form around you by sending two through the tunnel to push you into a corner while the other two flank around the clifftops to close in from the backside and drop in while you're not looking. And that's the goddamn normal difficulty.
But Crysis beats this game in almost every way anyway(I say almost because Crysis just doesn't have a map editor for the console versions)

I'm not saying they're smart or anything. They're still dumb as hell. Only this time they look intimidating.

  • 11.18.2011 9:58 PM PDT

hmmmm

You know how when you talk to someone, you have to find that person to talk to? And then you have to think about what you're going to say to them? And then you have to make the effort to have a conversation with them about that topic?
Well message boards take out all that effort, and let people instantly talk. And then it puts it on a bullhorn.
The "hate" is just that. If someone is at all frustrated with something, the internet is there to let them say it in the loudest, more extreme manor possible, with minimal effort or thought-out process. Always cut negative things in half... i think that's a better way to gage it.

  • 11.18.2011 10:44 PM PDT

I don't hate it, but the maps compared to Halo 2 and 3 are just mehh. The only maps I really like in Reach are remakes of prior maps :/

As far as Halo is concerned, I personally think that the only thing that actually scares me sh**less is Brute Chieftain in ODST.

2) Too many new things added to the game. If you have too much of one thing, it can and may lead to bad things.

3) From the competitive players viewpoint, no reasonable rank system. Progression system is far too easy to exploit and even with the rules that are currently in effect, it's not hard to get around them.

Exploit? You can't exploit it- USING it is exploiting it. Having credits make your rank only shows how long you've played, not how adept you are at the online system.

Although personally I rarely stepped foot in Ranked- I usually went to Social Slayer or Objective for small maps and especially Big Team because Big Team was the sh**

Oh yeah, since somebody does not believe what YOU believe; that makes us vapid...
I cannot grasp that what you call "Something happened to nothing, and that nothing became something, and it was smaller than than a period."

There are too many mlg players ruining my fun 5 6 of my games. Also is the cowardice and mlg players. My only two true complaints at this time.

  • 11.21.2011 10:22 PM PDT

I have no idea, I think a load of people piled into the franchise on Halo 3 never having played the previous ones so complained about Reach not being Halo 3 with a few flashing lights on.

To me reach feels more like a halo game than 3 ever did, I felt Halo 1 was great as was 2 then on 3 I just really didn't like the game compared to the others, I'm trying to force myself to play through the campaign just so I can say I'm done with the halo 3 campaign.

Halo has always been about fun from the campaign to the multilayer, I hated Halo 3 because they caved so much to MLG demands and now on Halo Reach I feel so much better as it seems like a damn fun game and not a super competitive one like Halo 3.
