Subject: I think Guilty Spark was talking to Mendicant Bias in the 3rd terminal

Transcript, taken from Halo wiki:

-White light fills the screen
343 Guilty Spark: "Construct, who is your maker?"

Unkown Construct: "Silence of pain is prepared, Oracle."

-Light fades to show the unknown construct, which appears to made of a column of light in various colors

Unknown Construct: "I am unworthy. I was never made."

343 Guilty Spark: "Never made? But you are right here. Where you should not be."

-View now of 343 guilty spark

343 Guilty Spark: " Tell your charger's to ceace ther efforts immidiately. Quarantine must not be violated."

-Now viewing a CCS-Class Battle Cruiser that is close to Installation 04

343 Guilty Spark: "Construct, respond"

Unkown Construct: "Jumbled Glass, familiar terms. I serve none so weak, Oracle"

-Screen pans back to Guilty Spark

343 Guilty Spark: Tell your Chargers to ceace all agression to the Reclaimers, and leave this installation at once."

-Now we see cells deviding as would be seen on a microscope

343 Guilty Spark: "Construct, you are dangerously close to unleashing a force you cannot yet comprehend."

-A forerunner view screen shows a hand of an Elite that is being taken over by Flood, then pans to see both 343 Guilty Spark, and the Unknown Construct.

343 Guilty Spark: "This is most inappropriate."

Unknown Construct: "We follow the path, and I am part of the stone journey that serves... I, we, serve. They will find, then I will be free."

343 Guilty Spark: "Find? Free? Explain yourself."

Unknown Construct: "I know their path, and when they have gone, only I shall remain. And then, free."

343 Guilty Spark: "This is quite unsatisfactory, Construct. Your core shows no inch of understanding the gravity of the situation. I will return later for your proper decommissoning. Well, unless the Flood kills us all first, in which case the point will be moot. Good day, Construct."

-The screen fades out

Nuff said. I think we might be seeing this fellow in Halo 4. VERY interesting.

United Armed Forces

I assumed it was the fragment the Covenant had.

... Though the more I think on it, the more I think I'm wrong.

F-f-f-f-fling yourself.

Look at the description for that terminal video in the main menu. It's a covenant construct.

Glory and fame, blood is our name!
Souls full of thunder, hearts of steel!
Killers of men, a warrior's friend!
Sworn to avenge our fallen brothers!
Sons of the gods, today we shall die.
Open Valhalla's door!
Let the battle begin, with swords in the wind! Hail Gods of War!

I dunno. His "I will be free" line seems to fit Mendicant Bias pretty well. After the Dreadnought lands on the Ark, he escapes into it's Terminal network.

And why would he call 343 "Oracle"

Or talk about being free and the great journey?

It's probably just one of the fragmented AI's that the Covenant had.

This.

Even though I'd love to see MB in one of the terminals in Halo CEA (or next year in Halo 4) I have to agree with LEPT0N and DaeFaron. I don't understand why MB would call 343 the oracle and talk about the Great Journey. These are all things the Covenant talk about so probably these things are also programmed in the AI his memory/brain or whatever it uses to think.

For Carnage, Apply Within.

I have returned from the Untamed Lands. MOAP is dead.

And just to add more proof it's a Covenant AI...

" Tell your chargers to ceace their efforts immidiately. Quarantine must not be violated."

"Tell your chargers to ceace all agression to the Reclaimers, and leave this installation at once."

  • 11.19.2011 10:30 AM PDT

Oh, that's definitely MB.

Exactly. It is, without a doubt, a Covenant AI (probably from one of their cruisers) and the way I see it, AIs might play and integral part in Halo 4 so the need to introduce them finally arrived.

Covenant AIs have been around since First Strike, probably earlier in the actual lore.

By introduce them, I meant to the "Visual Audience" that does not agree that something exists until they see it in a game.

It's a fragment of Mendicant Bias; something I think all 'Covenant AI' are. They try to imbue these shards with their own programming hence 'Oracle' and 'great journey,' but MB's core thoughts such as 'I will be free,' still shine through. It would explain why the 'construct's speech in this seems a little confused as it speaks to Spark.

That's how I see it, anyway.

Or Covenant AIs are overly copied former UNSC AIs, as Cortana herself suspected.

This is how I'm interpreting it as well.

The issue of where the Covenant got a human AI from has never been explained or developed upon. I'm actually expecting it to be retconned, or at least never mentioned again.
If the Covenant is above using human weapons, why would they view AI any differently? Also where did they get it from (though this is less an issue)?

It's 'Charges', not 'Chargers', is it not?
And this is being said by 343GS, he is calling the Covenant the charges of the AI, the AI is not claiming to rule them.
This was one of the themes that jumped out at me. GS is expecting the AI to have the role a Forerunner AI wold have in a group, as an advisor / protector / equal.
The Covenant AI, however, is a slave to the Covenant. This seems to be the source of the misunderstanding between the two.

  • 11.19.2011 3:46 PM PDT

How would they know how to fragment/copy Mendicant Bias in the first place? I'm fairly sure they'd never dare tamper with that part of the keyship :/.

Also, I'm sure 343 would be able to notice bits and pieces of forerunner AI, but he never mentions it as such.

*ahem*

Engineers are able to carry/separate an AI from their host system and store them.

Evidence: The Superintendent in Halo 3: ODST and Mo Ye in Midnight on the Heart of Midlothian.

Conclusion: Boarding parties like those on the Midlothian separate an AI from the ship's systems. It is possible they could ambush ships before they could fully initiate the Cole Protocol. The NAV data may get purged, but not before the AI could be. Once captured, they could be taken to some unknown location and copied.

"Apparently people don't like the truth, but I do like it; I like it because it upsets a lot of people. If you show them enough times that their arguments are bull-blam!-, then maybe just once, one of them will say, 'Oh! Wait a minute I was wrong.' I live for that happening. Rare, I assure you."-Lemmy of Motorhead

Yes, I'm the guy who had the Flood admit to being furries.

In Contact Harvest Truth had Mendicant, and activating him almost launched the Dreadnaught. I guess it or a part of it wormed onto one of the ships of the fleet at Halo, and most likely was the one that helped the Covenant find the Flood to set them loose.

Or the Covenant simply went in every single building they could find.

I mean, they were pretty excited.

I wake up to find myself
After all these years
And where all the time has gone
Still seems so unclear

I saw it as the Covenant copied a rampant(or later went rampant) Human AI and when the Halos kill everyone, he'll be free of their mundane tasks. Though, 343GS definitely thought he didn't know anything past basic functionality so who knows really.

It's probably just a Covenant A.I.

You would think that 343 would know at least a little bit about Mendicant, right?
