What is your CTF tactic? Of coz, noone's dumb enough to grab the flag and show it off to the enemy! So, CTF also require a little sneaking.Tell me how you grab the flag and get away with it...and how you defend the flag.

Being blue I put the pistol and exchange my rifle for the sniper. Then use the portal and walk to the hill and snipe them from there. By the time I get to base, I got allies there already.

I actually wait for the whole team to leave the base, and then get flag and when they try to return, I'm long gone. I also try not to take the most obvious routes, one time I cruised along the edge of the level, no one saw me.

What? Play a game? FOR FUN???
This concept of fun confuses and infuriates me!

Most of the time anymore I just wait for people to get the flag.. I generally defend the flag, but fail because one defender against 4 attackers and 2 heavys in the distance aint easy. Seriously.
I just pick up my sniper and shoot the enemys.
But if I ever go for it, I generally park a hog in the back, rush in, and grab the flag.
.......It usually fails.

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

My tactic is for those of us who are partially or completely colour-blind. Be on red team. Blue team is easier to see against earth tones on BG and other outdoor maps. Red just blends in.

n357, nice tactic. I'd never thought of that before. Both teams probably show up pretty easily on indoor maps, as most of the walls are grey. Blue may blend in slightly better indoors though?

Here are some good tactics that work for CTF.

Always keep moving! When you pick up the flag, no matter what, don't stop moving.

Learn how to safely drop the flag to return fire, then pick up the flag, then drop etc. all the way back to your base. This is the real way to score. You will never score if you run with the flag, back turned from the enemy. They will shoot you down. You must be prepared to shoot back even with the flag.

Frag grenades are your friends. When you have the flag, the enemy will be chasing you right? Learn how to drop the flag, and drop frag grenades behind you to eliminate enemies on your tail.

Last but not least: you cannot score if you are dead. Protect yourself at all costs, you can always go back for the flag or drop it if you must fight to live.

Most of the time, people don't even expect you to fight back when you have the flag. Imagine how surprised they are when you drop the flag and pull out a rocket launcher and take them out. :)

Normaly when defending on BG I just grab 24 rounds of sniper amo, 120 rounds of pistol ammo, and 4 of each nade. once I get all that I will normally stay on top of our base and just snipe the enemy as they come out of there base or tele. when they manage to get to our base in say...a hog, right when they get out i start hopping back and forwards over the hole on top of our base chucking down nades, 94% of the time that kills the guy going for it.

When going for the flag I get me and a friend together and we each take a hog to the enemy base and Parke on both entrances to the base. This way incase I hop out grab the flag and come back and my hog is flipped over can fall back to the other side of the base and get into my friends hog even if he is dead. That can save your life as you wont have to take the time to flip your hog back over and get in because in most cases that’s when you get a swarm of the enemy all over you.

I dont usually sneak, i get a hog then drive to the opponents base then drive straight to the door jump out when it is still moving get the flag then run out, get back in the hog and drive back, or i run to the base grab the flag and run backwards jumping and crouching and moving around alot, then usually get killed about halfway then my teammate gets it.

Frnksnbns gave the best advice, but almost everything else said above wont work in a real game of ctf, but probally will in public games.

CTF in public game:
get hog, go to base, get flag, go score. OS and heavy if you want extra protection ;)

A general BG CTF tactic:
control mid field, 1 person gets a hog, goes to the os caves, gets os, get a heavy weapon if needed, everyone pushes, get flag. Rinse and repeat, but to get the flag home, controlling mid field is pretty important or else you will get blown up/ shot out of your hog before your half way back.
Sometimes attacking them with a heavy isn’t a good idea unless you’re sure you can get out alive, or else your giving them a heavy weapon. Normally the midfielders should have a heavy weapon to take out any attack hogs, or hogs running away with your flag.
Communication is the most important thing, every member of your team needs to be able to relay information (enemy activity, location and direction) to other teammates without typing, so if your not using team speak or vent, you’re playing blind.
Thats pretty much the basic tactic for most bg ctf games.
You could really go into alot of depth, game size, the tactics change alot depending on the number of people on each team. And also you could go into alot of detail with counter strats and strats to make sure they cant counter your move etc.

It all comes down to Team work and communication, but the ability to kill helps.

Skill isnt everything in a ctf game, numourous times I've seen a team with some one who just mowed through anyone, but they still lost because they didnt have the communication therefore couldent out manouver their opponent and lost. But if you have that skill plus the ability to work as a team well, then there's a force to be reckoned with...

Hopefully thats enlightened some people about how business is done in a real game of ctf.

I'm more of a defender myself to be honest but when i do decide to go after it i'll do one of two options:

1. From our base i'll quickly survey the battlefield in the distance and near by. If it's not being blown apart and chaos i'll drive through it (some times i drive through even if it is lol) As i approach their base in my vehicle i take note of all, if any, vehicles surrounding their base so i have other options of escape. Strangely i never use the teleporter lol.

2. I'll take the less obvious route, such as through caves or round the sides of the maps, ducking and using scenery to shield me from sight. Get there, lob a few grenades and make sure i'm armed with a pistol, steal their flag, get the nearest vehicle and make good on my escape lol

What people don't understand about most team games is dispersal of forces. In an ideal CTF situation (Where you're playing to win) you'd go in, get out and score without seeing ANYONE. It is incredibly hard to cap a flag if you're getting enemies spawned on your ass.

There's already a good section already on teamwork, so this is mostly a solo guide to capping flags, and requires a lot of stealth, misdirection and speed. It does NOT require teamwork, and I use this style on public servers for fun.

The best time to see this is on Sidewinder, in ANY public game, 9/10 times EVERYONE will immediately grab ghosts/hogs/go to the top teleporter and leave. I myself grab a ghost and go through the centre tunnels. I go in, occasionally grab an overshield, go over the top (might see a ghost going past the other direction), hover right into the base, do a bounce-grab (Exit the ghost at full speed while heading at the wall, then get back in the ghost immediately - just keep hitting 'E' and you'll grab the flag and bounce, and head backwards quicker) and return back through the tunnels.

The point is, the base is deserted. It's almost always a clean maneuver. Later in the game, if your team is spamming the spawn points with rods and such, it becomes much harder to get in and get out again, simply because of the number of enemies inside/around the base.

As a strategy, I'd say try to let the opponents stray out from the base to round the middle area instead of killing them all off fast, sneak in, and when you have the flag your team should already be engaging the enemy, allowing you to punch through their lines.

Another thing is misdirection. I have many times in BG driven round the back of the enemy base 3/4 of the way (so I end up next to the ramp on the opposite side), go up top and lob a nade in first. Then it's an easy jump down, kill anyone left (sometimes with the flag) and circle round the FRONT of the base (or behind sometimes, depending) to my hog, or if it's gone, back up to the teleport. If I have a gunner still on the hog I sometimes leave em and teleport anyway - it's a very good distraction and if you feel bad you can toss em the flag later...

Dropping the flag is usually a valid tactic; if you want to reload your weapon eg. the RL with the flag, jump and throw it forward, then reload-melee and by the time you pick the flag up again you'll have reloaded. However, remember a running flag melee is powerful to kill people on medium health, eg an already naded enemy. When running away while still near the enemy spawn, a fun trick is to run round a corner and melee as the chasers follow. This should buy you enough time to get away.

Steal vehicles! If you come from the tunnel on Danger Canyon, and see a ghost, hijack it and tail it out of there! If you manage to cross over the bridge in Infinity, if you're lucky you can steal a banshee from up top.

Leave vehicles! If you passed a fuel rod guy on the way to the base, go teleport, or through the tunnels. If you come in via a hog, leave it as a distraction for the enemy thinking you're going to go for it. If (even better) you banshee-drop into the base in DI, and see another empty banshee up top, grab the flag and tele out. The enemy will wait for you at the bottom and miss you.

Don't always rush in. If the base is full, wait for some people to leave, or backup to arrive.

If there is a Rhog in the base, it can be dealt with by surprise with a rocket launcher (or a couple of nades) but this is a risky tactic.

Watch out for base campers, and if one does get you, you'll know where they'll be the next time round.

If necessary, hide inside the enemy base until the enemy go away. It's risky, but less so than running out naked into 5 reds. They'll never expect you to be there!

The best choice of escape vehicle for the solo flag-capper is usually banshee, then the ghost, then hog/foot (tied for equalness) and then tank. It depends on the map, teleports, and number of enemies.

If the enemy ARE in force at the base, a decent diversion will usually allow you to get through - occasionally if a friendly hog flies overhead you can snag the flag.

One last point: if both sides have flags, if at all possible do NOT hide inside your base. Get a vehicle and hide somewhere else. The enemy will always attack your base first, giving you extra space. In contrast, when looking for the enemy, if an experienced player has the flag look in nonconspicuous places (near the tunnels in BG, behind the rocks in a ghost in Danger Canyon, under the base in DI etc).

Happy capping!

If the match is on Timberland, the best place to shoot incoming players is from "the mound :P", aka, the big hill to the right of each base where the sniper and health spawn. If a team has a good sniper there, it's almost impossible for the enemy to do ANYTHING in the area that is in the sniper's line of sight.

Really, it depends on what map you're playing CTF in. But a very important rule is to protect the flag carrier. It's as simple as that, and something every CTF player should know.

It's not as simple as that, you'll need cover support, draw their attention so they don't ambush the guy when he gets the flag, plus he needs a rise, and unless your making a big asssult, its not wise to go threw the teleporter or else people will follow and kill you, unless you have a squad at the enemy teleport for an escort. It's not that simple.

here's a pretty good tatic for ctf on a pretty open map like Blood Gulch, get warthogs armed and raid the enemy base, lower their numbers and keep them low keep the warthog circling their base, draw off their attention. With a second hog bring in a guy to get the flag, and bring the warthog armed, this way, the enemy numbers will be low, and you'll have two rides to escape with plus its a less likely chance you'll get killed, and also with their numbers low you'll have a much much higher chance of making it through the teleporter, and back to the base.

Hm....i am more of a flag defender too....

The ways i capture the flag...
1) Get in a warthog, drive into the nme base....see if there's any warthog behind base...if there is....drive into the front hole into the Flag room...grab it and go to the other side and drive away with enemy car (You dont go back to your car because enemies may be waiting there.
2)Go portal,use pistol...walk to enemy base...killl anyone you see....go on top...clear the base...drop and drive...

The ways i defend the flag
1)See if enemies/ enemies car coming...if there is...go to where they are heading...and frag the car when it stops...if you cant frag the guy in the car....either you Wait where his car is...then frag him...or frag inside the Flag room on top of your base...(Frag against the walls like ambush...)

When I defend the flag in Blood Gulch, all I do is get a shotgun (which is conveniently right inside of the base, near the flag) and crouch into a corner or a crevice. Then I just wait for them to come.

If I'm walking back, I drop frag grenades behind me, as I go through TPs or around corners in tunnels. In no-sheilds games it's an instant kill. With shields it may take 2 or some AR fire.

The best tactic is to have team mates give you covering fire. Once, on Death Island, the enemy got our flag. He walked out the door. We, (3 or 4 of us), followed. Two team mates of his with a fuel rod and a rocket launcher hammered us. We got them and crested the hill expecting an easy kill– just shoot him in the back. Flag carrier is getting in a ghost and 2 tanks are blasting us. He got away and scored.

There are other considerations: is it an assault ctf game? Does the flag reset on it's own or when touched?

Assault with 2 flags and flag must be home to score is tough. You have to have one team go to enemy base and take it over till the flag respawns and keep the enemy from touching it– the flag carrier stays nearby, but hidden. Once the flag carrier hears that their flag carrier was killed and no one else picked it up he brings in the flag to score.

I almost always go up top. If you stay in a corner, it's easy to jump down and melee you to death, even with a shotgun - in a corner it's near impossible to escape melees and dodging the shotgun isn't that hard at EXTREME close range.

:)

Try using the 'forward drop technique' to carry three weapons while running down a map. I find it perfect to carry a pistol, then switch back and forth between a sniper and a fuel rod/rocket launcher. If you just keep droping one of the weapons in front of you while running, then pick it up, then drop it, then pick it up, ad naseum, you've got three weapons at your disposal. Once you get the hang of it, it's very useful.

Good defensive CTF tactics....don't defend the flag so much as defend a specific point. Almost all of the maps have mutliple ways of getting to the opposing team's flag. The only exception is Ice Fields, but it makes up for it by having two exits (the back portal). So...a team must defend the highest ground in close proximity to their flag.
For example, on Danger Canyon, you have the tunnels and the front as the ways into your base. Instead of parking a hog on the flag area, or those ramps, park the hog about 100 feet away up on the high point. Park the hog so the opposing team will not see you, but you can see their vehicles coming up the steep incline to your base. Ideally a machine gun hog would be close enough to physically shoot the incoming hogs/ghost. A rocket hog would sit a few more feet closer to base completely out of sight, then fire upon the ground in front on inc. vehicles. Then to defend the tunnels, you have boots on the ground in that area, and most of the team flooding the tunnels. Taking ghosts and hogs into the tunnels is a bad bad idea and will almost always hurt you in the long run. In good CTF games, nobody does this.

Another general defensive CTF tactic is to use stealth to coax the enemy into taking the flag, then attack. In other words, allow them to grab the flag before showing yourself. It takes time to drop the flag and return fire, so exploit that weakness. You can almost always run right behind them, although better players will immediately start spinning to see whose around. Once they grab the flag, attacking immediately is usually best.

in blood gulch, go behind the hill, and thru the caves, its the safest. On any map, teamwork is key, if everyone just goes and tries to get the flag at the same time, you are all going to end up being mowed down by respwning players and people on the way. Actually have a plan! Do something like have 2 groups attack the enemy from differant places, flank them. Keep part of your team to spawn kill the guys respawning, don't give them the chance to get thier flag back, cheap, but it works! It doesn't matter who gets the flag, as long as your team wins, that is the point of the game! also, keep yourself alive by taking cover and falling back when nessesary, let your shield recharge then help your friends, if you just go and assault with like 3 bars of life left and no shiled, you are going to be stopped short and be of no use to the team. PROTECT THE DAMN FLAG CARRIER!
