Wanna be a designer? Research how things are put together in a game. Go through it and take notes about how it's laid out to help the player without being in their face. Research how characters are built to support the world they're in. Plays lots and lots of games. If you're the sort of guy who watches a movie and thinks always about "I know how that was done" or "I wonder how they did this shot" then you're a designer of some sort.

I'd actually disagree slightly with this. Learning to be a designer is more about "doing" than "research". If you want to be a designer, start making games. There are lots of ways for someone to start making their own games without advanced skills. Play other games and study them, sure. But just like you're not going to be a writer unless you write every day, you're not going to be a game designer unless you're actively, constantly designing games.

One of my favorite indie games, Audiosurf, was made by the husband of a former coworker of mine. Before he made Audiosurf, he set himself a personal challenge of cranking out a little Flash game every week and kept that up for months. It didn't have to be super fun or complex, just something playable. Eventually, one of those little games formed the seed of Audiosurf.
Oh whoops, yeah, exactly this. I just didn't give my full speech on getting into the industry, which upon reflection was a bit silly of me.

You're totally right, though, you should start making them as soon as you can. It's what I'm doing with Whisper. Started it as a little Flash Game team right when I started learning how to make Flash in my first year at College and now this is what it turned into 3 years on.

2/15/12: Francisco Porras, I'll miss you. Rest in Peace.

Yes it does.
To me UDUB doesn't translate into University of Washington. It would be more like WSU or something along the lines of that.

EDIT: UDUB?

So what college should I go to? WASU or UDUB? Other?

Does the "?" imply you don't understand? UDUB = university of Washington

My tip gamemakerIt will give you some experience, it's simple and works quite well. I would also look up a programming language. You can also use google sketchup if you would like some simplistic level design.

Just do it and see if you like it. You would be surprised what you can do with these tools.

If your looking towards more of an art direction in the industry, try to find some animation software and practice your art skills. Sketches are a good way to practice.

RIP Halo 2: November 9, 2004-May 10, 2010
I was the 2nd to last person to get kicked off Halo 2, see the thread Here

It'd be an amazing job. Hell, it's my dream job. But, I'm taking a safer path and getting a degree in pharmacy, because I know I'll make good money. In the gaming industry, you have to be known and the best of the best to work at a place like Bungie. Too much room for failure.

[UNINTELLIGIBLE > INSUBORDINATION(?)]

I figured I do the same sort of thing, except Concept art is more of my specialty.

Red vs Blue Fan. Doc is the best!

I'm currently taking Summer Courses at DigiPen. It's a great Institute.

"I pledge to punch all switches, to never shoot where I could use grenades, to admit the existence of no level except Total Carnage, to never use caps lock as my "run" key, and to never, ever, leave a single BoB alive."

2B || !2B - Why don't you look Inside the Machine?

Not to be a party pooper, but DigiPen's RTIS Bachelor cost is expected to be around $157,000. To say it is expensive is an understatement.

Haha I had the same idea as you OP. But with all the replies about making games, got me thinking maybe this isn'y my path, considering I haven't made any games. But meh, I guess I will have to choose a different career path. As for you OP, not much more I can say because everyone else has already said it. Just make games and stuff I guess.
