Subject: Issue With WLID...sort of

...and before you say anything, I did look through the FAQ, but I didn't see this in there.

Alright, so here is the issue:

I just changed the WLID associated with my gamertag. I did not do this on Bungie.net. I did this on my Xbox. So now to log in to my gamertag I type XYZ@hotmail.com instead of ABC@hotmail.com.

Now my question. Is there a way to change the WLID that my Bnet username and profile is associated with so that I do not have to log-out/log-in every time I go from one site to the other? If there is, I haven't found it. I can change my preferred email, but not my log in email...or can I?

Clarify for me: Are you asking if there is a way, since you changed your WLID, to make it so your Bnet account and your Gamertag's account are the same, so you don't have to log in and out of each to get to the other?

In other words, you want them connected?

Correct. My gamertag was linked previously. Now, my gamertag is associated with a shiny new WLID, and my Bnet account is stuck on grumpy, old WLID.

Is there a way to move "Sgt Dippinbud" to the new WLID, so that I can still link my gamertag?

Well, actually....it seems that my account is now linked to some generic gamertag since I was logged into this WLID when I changed it on the Xbox.

I was unaware that Xbox.com randomly generated such ridiculous names. GooeyBody36? Seriously?

The distance between insanity and genius is measured only by success.

The problem with the world is that the intelligent people are full of doubts, while the stupid ones are full of confidence.

As you waste your breath complaining about life, Someone out there is breathing their last. Appreciate what you have.

If you stand for nothing, you will fall for anything.

You can't connect it to your Xbox. The only way to have it connected is if you were to change your email on the Xbox back or create a new bnet account.

OK. I have done this myself multiple times and given people these exact instructions. You won't like them but they definitely work.

You're stuck like this for the next 30 days. Once those 30 days are up, you will need to switch your WLID, from your Xbox, BACK to what it was. This will relink your gamertag to this Bnet account. After you do that? You'll go to Passport.net. You'll sign in there (remember: Using your original WLID since you changed it back). You'll then change the e-mail from your account page to the new WLID.

That will change your WLID both for your gamertag, Bnet account, and other WLID sites. You'll log into your Bnet account with the new WLID too. But for the next 30 days you're stuck.

Thanks Burrito. I can wait 30 days. I haven't been playing Halo lately so that won't be much of an issue. I just didn't want it to be a permanent thing.

You cannot change the Windows Live ID associated to your Bungie.net profile, however, you may be able to change the email address of your Windows Live ID. If the email address you use to sign into Bungie.net is not a Microsoft domain (msn.com, live.com, hotmail.com), you may change it at this page.

You wouldn't be able to change the email address to match the one for your Xbox LIVE gamertag because that email is associated to a different Windows Live ID. You would have to change it to an email address that is not associated with a Windows Live ID.

Note: If you can't change the email address of the Windows Live ID you use to sign into your Bungie.net profile, you're stuck with that until Bungie.net changes. To link your accounts, you would have to do one of the following.

1. Create a new Bungie.net profile with the Windows Live ID associated to your Xbox LIVE gamertag.
2. Change the Windows Live ID of your Xbox LIVE gamertag to match the Windows Live ID you use to sign into your Bungie.net profile.

If you're not interested in those options, you may send a private message to Achronos and explain your situation. He usually will not help with those requests because of several reasons. If he does though, don't tell anyone.

Either way, it is flawed. I changed my email address because somebody had tried (unsuccessfully) to gain access to my account. I figured I might as well change the entire thing, but not it is a huge pain.

Bungie doesn't allow you to change the Windows Live ID associated to your profile because it's a security risk. Let's say you forget to sign out of Bungie.net in a public area. Would you like it if someone gained access to your profile and changed your Windows Live ID to their Windows Live ID? There'd be absolutely nothing you or Bungie could do at that point.

If Bungie implements their own logon system down the road, then you would most likely be able to change/remove the Windows Live ID associated to your profile because there would be another way for you to sign in with your username. You would also be able to reset your password with the email on profile.

I see the point, and it makes sense. It is an easy fix though...simply require you to re-type your password for any changes. In fact, WLID already does that, because when I changed the email address on the Xbox it made me retype the old email and password first.

The thing with the Xbox though is that changing it there just changes the WLID your GT is associated with. Doing it from the website changes the WLId your Bnet account is associated with. Changes the one you log incwith an stuff... not to mention billing information and notices and all that jazz.
