I don't know about Reach's 'failure' or if such concept exists, but I do know CoD has been more fun and rewarding than the two latest major Halo titles (H3 and Reach).

Better than reach? Yes. H3 though? LOL, NO.

Halo 3 was honestly the biggest letdown in video game history. I have more nostalgia from lolReach than I have from Halo 3.

The progressive ranking system in Reach is so boring and lame compared to halo 3's ranking system that correlated to skill level mixed with exp.

Reach got so boring and failed, this is one of the reasons for me.

The Title Update.

What killed Halo: Reach?
I lol'd

To be honest, it sure as hell didn't boost the population any. Less people are playing now. You could say because of games like Skyrim, Saints Row 3, Batman, Gears 3, BF3, and MW3 just came out, but nah, Reach is bad. A game being bad must be the only reason not to play it.

Yeah, I agree that the lack of a real ranking system kind of killed the want to win.

Another reason, reach should have had ranked and social playlists like always.

um i do not want to go through "one more win to rank up to X ok i got it. lose next game get de ranked back to old one" thats fun to you? its the main reason i quit ranked in h3

Why are we still talking about Reach's failure a year after release? At this point you either like the game or not, and it shouldn't be anymore than that. We already knew the game was going to fail from the beginning. It happened in the Campaign, and it happened in the Multiplayer.

Just hang out till Halo 4.

Anniversary made the game playable.

What bias. I don't think its a failure.

So you quit because you were bad?

Ranking in up H3 wasn't that hard. You clearly just don't understand how the system works.

winning 6 games in a row to get one rank up and losing it after ONE loss. thats fun?

My problems [with Reach] are basically just full parties, mlg, and people who go out of their way not to get killed.

It failed to the masses because of the heavy competition. Why it failed to the hardcore fans who dislike it, well, you'd have to ask them. The reasons vary and are numerous.

Reach broke sales records and its population was enormous even after Black Ops was released...only once players got the feel for the game did you see the population decline...don't you think this "competition" excuse is a bit of a straw man? What games besides Black Ops came out in the last quarter of 2010 that really impacted Reach?

Yes, but it is also a bit naive to assume that players left because things like armor lock and bloom. Especially when most players who purchase the game would not be able to tell you what bloom is.

Yeah I agree. No doubt the majority of people didn't stop playing Reach because of the specific inconsistencies in the gameplay that more veteran Halo players would find fault with - but - I think that speaks to the larger problem with Reach. Whatever the specific reasons, it was Reach itself (the gameplay) that drove people away.

I think it just depends which angle you want to look at it. I mean, I'm arguing it's the casual-friendly and instant gratification other games are now offering that pushed people to other games.

That just means that Halo needs to step it up and given what the consumers seem to be enjoying these days I hope 343 doesn't "step it up" in the direction of casual-friendly and overall hardcore fan-screwing.

Yeah, 343 is in a tough spot. On one hand they do need to appeal to the herpderp masses but on the other they need to be careful not to completely alienate hardcore Halo fans.

Honestly though I think the simple fact that Master Chief is back in H4 will significantly impact people's subconscious enjoyment of the game.

IMO Bungie's biggest mistake was straying away from MC's storyline and the badass "Chuck Norris" style feeling you get while playing as him. There was something special that seemed to appeal to the masses and "just worked" with the style of game that revolved around MC.

"Devolving" to the Spartan III's without that sense of "I'm a badass invincible super-soldier" really impacted people's enjoyment of Reach. It's just a hunch, and an unfounded one at that, but I think if Reach - as it is now - had featured Master Chief it would be a lot better off than it is currently.

Name's John. I'm a 21-year-old firefighter/EMT from lolhio who doubles as a die-hard Halo fan. I've been enjoying the franchise since 2001. My favorite iteration of Halo would have to be Halo 2 simply because I never got to experience the joy of a full-on Halo: CE LAN.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Oh yeah, and boot Zome.
