Yeah, 343 is in a tough spot. On one hand they do need to appeal to the herpderp masses but on the other they need to be careful not to completely alienate hardcore Halo fans.

Honestly though I think the simple fact that Master Chief is back in H4 will significantly impact people's subconscious enjoyment of the game.

IMO Bungie's biggest mistake was straying away from MC's storyline and the badass "Chuck Norris" style feeling you get while playing as him. There was something special that seemed to appeal to the masses and "just worked" with the style of game that revolved around MC.

"Devolving" to the Spartan III's without that sense of "I'm a badass invincible super-soldier" really impacted people's enjoyment of Reach. It's just a hunch, and an unfounded one at that, but I think if Reach - as it is now - had featured Master Chief it would be a lot better off than it is currently.

Let's start off by listing problems with Reach:
AAs (Jetpack/Armor Lock/Camo especially)
Wonky grenade physics
Slow movement speed
Low jump height
Bloom
Lackluster map selection
Remaking maps that were bad in the first place (Ascension/Ivory Tower/etc)

Now your turn. I don't think the master chief had very much to do with why Reach failed to stand up to the Halo name.

I'm not defending Reach in any way. All those things you listed are at the heart of the problem of why Reach isn't that great - but to get back to the Master Chief thing.

Cross AA's, movement speed, & jump height off the list because if Master Chief is back - all those should be gone.

For the rest:

Name's John. I'm a 21-year-old firefighter/EMT from lolhio who doubles as a die-hard Halo fan. I've been enjoying the franchise since 2001. My favorite iteration of Halo would have to be Halo 2 simply because I never got to experience the joy of a full-on Halo: CE LAN.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Oh yeah, and boot Zome.

My problems [with Reach] are basically just full parties, mlg, and people who go out of their way not to get killed.

no weakness -

I remain skeptical as to whether the main character can simply sway the masses that much. I know Chief is big and definitely one of the most iconic characters in gaming but to put Halo back at the top? Eh.

Agreed. 343 is going to need to find the perfect balance between new and old, casual and competitive, fan and stranger.

Good luck, 343. I'm rooting for ya!

Same. Though, at this point I'm hoping for the best while expecting the worst.

Halo has been disappointing me since Halo 3. It's only by maintaining this cautious approach that I've been able to keep my overall love for the Halo franchise intact.

Oh I definitely didn't mean he'd make that much of a difference. But I think he'd help a bit. At least he'd make a better front man than the ambiguous "the main character is you!" bull-blam!- that Bungie pulled with Reach.

Mainly I was tying Master Chiefs inclusion into the game with that specific "feel" and "gameplay style/mechanics" that come with him - mainly your movement speed and jump height.

That is definitely going to augment the gameplay, at least. I also think that after Halo Wars, Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach the casuals are going to happy to finally see a Halo title they know...

Halo 4

There is no side-story involved. No confusing gimmicks or storylines. Just Halo 4.

The reticle bloom made the game feel like a poor attempt to attract COD players.

I'm going to be happy to finally see a Halo title I know. ODST and Reach just wreak of a studio (filled with new people maybe?) who were eager to make something new - yet were contractually obligated to continue with the Halo franchise - which unfortunately led to them butchering the Halo universe in the process (ODST wasn't bad, just not my cup of tea).

To be entirely honest, I'd buy and enjoy anything they threw my way that involved Halo. I just love Halo.

But Halo 4? I'm pumped. Especially after reading Glasslands.

Halo 3: ReV Eskimo

eventually ill be back on Reach and CEA. i enjoy gaming for fun, im a great player and i enjoy smoking while i play. so any chill players feel free to add me. I in NO way support halocharts; old username.

eh, wasnt a fan of the new "heavy" gravity. i miss duel wielding but those arent too bad. what i can STAND in reach is the new equipment. camo, shield, sprint, etc.

i wasnt too much of a fan of the equipment in halo 3, but i learned to love it because it played a HUGE part in strategy and the balance of gameplay. Reach did NOT live up to that strategy to me.
