But i don't know where to start. I really want to find out more about the forerunners so is cryptum a good place to start?

Intolerance is the highest level of stupidity and inbred thinking.

Typically (correct me if I'm wrong) people read in the order of Contact Harvest, The Fall of Reach, The Flood, First Strike, Ghosts of Onyx, and The Cole Protocol. But, for you, since you want Forerunners first, I'd go Cryptum, and then Primordium. I don't know much about the new Forerunner books. Oh, and stick Glasslands after Cole Protocol me thinks.

But the order doesn't really matter too much, except with the new books.

You might want to read all of them because each book talks about different Forerunner artifacts and ETC. But i think u might wanna read Harvest first

Read them in release order. Just because something's chronologically earlier it doesn't mean you'd start with it first. For example, you wouldn't watch the Star Wars prequels before the original trilogy as you'd miss all the references, build-ups and foreshadowing.

Or you wouldn't play Crisis Core: FFVII before actually playing Final Fantasy VII.

I know i was just giving him an alternative. Since we read it in that order we see things differently.Maybe the next generation should be different..
