For TL;DR's, Halo was new, now its not. CoD, BF, Gears, etc. are newer, so people like them more.
The fact of the matter is, the general fad has shifted from sci-fi to moder day combat. Halo took over so well because not a single console based game was even remotely close to how advanced it was at the time. The only other games out at that time were half life and its affiliates.
Halo also had done something no other FPS had ever done. It introduced face passed combat and simplicity all at once. 1 button for the gun, 1 for grenades, and 1 to switch between only 2 guns. This makes for extreamly quick and simple combat. Other games like counterstrike and golden eye you had to swap between multiple weapons and grenades all on 1 list. Halo was different. You could throw grenades easily with the push of a button w/o having to cycle through a list back to your gun. This was (imo) what made people love it so much at first. This new system spawned a new way to speed up FPS. Look at CoD and BF.
Now that technology and graphics have enhanced, games like CoD and BF have taken what halo introduced and introduced them into modern combat. Odviously other factors play into it but subtle detail is what started everything. CoD and BF just added on to it by now makeing the environment even faster to match combat speed and now gives rise to a far more chaotic situation then halo ever dreamed of. This adds to realism and makes you feel more like you're really there. Halo sevearly lacks the impact that these previous examples provide and therefor now falls short as is now odvious by current attendance on playlists.
This is my personal opinion based on how i remember my first introduction to the game and how i felt when i first played it.
