So we can all agree that some things in HR contradicted TFoR right? My question is weather you were for or against the changes in Reach, do you feel more comfortable with them after you have read the datadrops?

:)

After reading the datadrops, I felt good about the campaign. It was like a breath of fresh air when everything was pieced together. In fact, I actually played through it again. It's just too bad that it still sucks and felt like a chore to go through after the first level.

I was comfortable with the game before the datadrops even existed.

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

They can plug as many holes as they like, the wall isn't any more attractive.

Pretty terrible metaphor, what I'm trying to say is that no matter how many plot holes are corrected the storyline was still abysmal.

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

After I read the datadrops, I looked at the game completely differently. It didn't fix everything but it gave us a lot of material.

No. Actually, I felt worse. I felt just about as bad when I found out they changed the novel's to fit with Reach.

Major dickslap to the face that was.

This.

And actually understanding that
1: it's a reconstruction (and therefore bound to be inconsistant)
2: TFoR doesn't really feature the Battle for Reach in that much detail

also helped already.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

Reach's canon-breaking campaign should be non-canon, plain and simple. Not only did they disregard the Fall of Reach, they replaced it with a extremely s**tty, half-assed campaign with one-dimensional characters.

Bottom line, now they're trying to make it fit with Halo: Reach which makes me feel so much worse. Similar to what ajw said, they can try fixing all the plot holes...but, the story is still extremely bad now that they're trying to fit it in with lolReach.

Man, now that I think of it...what a great swan song. They practically gave 343 the middle finger and said "Haha f**k you. You're going to have to deal with are abysmal, half-assed, canon-breaking story! Have fun trying to fix that mess. With love, Bungie. :)"

Pretty much this, but at least I can include Reach in my chronological playthrough of the series before Halo 4 comes out now.

  • 11.25.2011 8:09 AM PDT

When Halo Reach first came out I was really upset with the canon breaks, but now with the data drops and the realization that HR was an interactive recording of the events of Reach made by ONI really fixed things for me. They could change the dates and ages of Nobel Team as they see fit.

Actually, if you read Dr. Halsey's journal, it pretty much covers all the unconsistencies. (Not all)

It really doesn't, it just goes alongside with the game as a bit of extra backgroiund, there's little-to-no canon rectification.

And you honestly wonder why I say you appear to blindly hate Reach and everything about it?

If it was honestly that -blam!- awful canon wise, 343 would've just sad "It's not canon." or did something like "100% oni propaganda to make humanity feel better."

Besides, everybody else against Reach has moved on from such rants. Ajw, Grey, Anton, sure there are a few I forget. What do they say? "Fixes the holes but I don't like it."

You? "Reach is extremely -blam!-, half assed with no real characters" (while ignoring the fact in a single game Chief got about the same amount of character development.)

Why must you be so damn hostile to anybody who likes Reach?

  • 11.25.2011 10:17 AM PDT

I felt fine about Reach before any of the Data Drops were released and I'd still feel that way if they never had been.

I felt that Reach did a much better job of accurately depicting the Battle of Reach than TFoR did. I didn't feel like TFoR's depiction of the battle was very accurate and it just didn't make any sense to me. I'm sure everyone here knows about "willing suspension of disbelief", well that wasn't something I could do with TFoR, by itself it just wasn't enjoyable to me because the whole situation felt absurd and not very realistic.

That's only by itself though, however with both Reach and TFoR the whole thing makes much more sense. Imo, neither one is perfect on its own, but together they make a good whole. I enjoyed Reach however much more than I did TFoR.

Bungie let Master Chief's character development work out as they went with the series. And that's ok, it's not the most professional attempt, but it worked out fine.

Noble Team's character development however was extremely forced and I never found myself surprised or impressed with their behavior.

It was like... no, man, I shouldn't even be explaining this to you. Just play the Reach campaign and always focus on the chemistry in the team.

It's not there. Bungie simply stating that Noble Team is a bundle of deep bonds, teamwork and heroism does not make it so.

You gotta back up your talk with actions and proper meaningful dialogue, instead of expecting the player to work out the story in his mind.

It's painful to admit, but Reach as a whole, did not deliver the final justice spear into the hearts of many Halo fans.

It's ok though, Bungie, as long as you in your heads admit it, I won't judge you. There's tons of games to make in the future still.

No. The big problems with Reach, it's uninteresting drama and tension free story remain. The Datadrops really don't improve or fix anything.
