I think the subject speaks for itself

Life is a journey, if you spend all of it with your nose in your map, you may miss some of the best parts.

Check your connection.

Now check if you live outside of the US.

I don't know my connection is fine.

I am in the US and other people said they had the same problem. I think it is 343 lagging on the job

That's called a bad host.

Get this through your thick skull: 343 has no control over in game connections.

Then I take that back. Whats a bad host?

He who cannot command himself should obey. And many can command themselves, but much is still lacking before they can obey themselves.

343 does have control. They write the algorithm that decides who gets host.

I'm so confused! Whats a bad host?

I'm so confused! Whats a bad host?

The MatchMaking system "decides" who has the "best" connection to be the host of the game. The host of the game controls how fast information goes from one Xbox to the other. When someone has a bad host, that means the information you are sending out takes a long time to get back to you, i.e. the host has a bad connection or your connection to the host is bad. The host acts as a central hub for all information exchanged throughout the game.

Make sense?

A bad host would be one who's upload bandwidth/router could not support hosting. Bad host is often attributed to a multitude of other things such as poor connection between you and the host, regardless of where the fault may lie (it could lie on any one of the many hops between the two points).

Your description makes complete sense. The thing is, my connection is always "EXCELLENT" and unless Im a host every game, I dont think it's my fault. I 100% believe that this is 343 because this was working last month , it just recently happened.

Here's why I agree with you: the algorithm for deciding who should be host is a failure, at best. The Halo: Reach population is so low, the algorithm picks some pretty horrific connections to "host" the game. What makes it worse, is that the system "remembers" who the "good" hosts are and they get a heavier weight on who gets host each game. Thus, negating a new comparison when the system matches up players that have never seen each other before; this occurring more frequently than every due to the low population.

  • 11.24.2011 8:49 PM PDT

And if that isnt the problem? What would happen is all players' would crash, the screen would turn blank, and when it comes back, I'm the only one there.

If you're the only one in the game, then you lagged out of it.

I have noticed the situation about always getting host due to low population. I've been getting host way more than I used to get it. I don't even know if it's good or not since it's usually full green bar and only a couple of people have complained about it being laggy out of a crap ton of games I've played with host. Of course people might be just dealing with it and not saying anything, so I'll never know unless I ask, but I don't feel like doing that.

Hehe, me neither.

RC Clone is the anti-thesis of a lurker.

Because the host has dial up or is on the other side of the world.

But it never happened until 343 took over.

I think a bunch of people with bad connections started playing and the system is checking their connection quality by giving them host.

That REALLY cleared this up. Thanks for your help!

Low population results in realy bad host selections. So many games this week has been red, orange and yellow bar connection with insane lag. Yet my buddy has 70mb up and we still get to play on -blam!- hosts, heck even my connection is better then the crap we have to play on.

I've been getting some connection problems too. Most of the time, It just goes black and the match continues off again. I also lag out in some matches. This didn't happen in the past and now It's starting to become a issue here.
