...That would require too much effort on their part.
I have no idea why people keep saying this... It takes absolutely 0 effort to sit there and not do anything, wait for the thread to get big, and then ban all of them. Now, if they went on an alt and made a thread to incite rule breaking and THEN banned people, that would be going above and beyond the action of -- and out of the way of -- and putting forth a lot of effort to -- ban people.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I am sure that they would not do that. The Mods usually don't abuse their powers and if they did they would probably be removed from their position of a Forum Ninja.

Of course, you hypothesis is very clever and you do have many details to support it as well. But on the other hand, Mods do not always see the threads the minute that they are created, and that is why you are probably thinking that they "wait for the thread to get long and then ban all of the users that replied to it".

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

If someone makes a statement that may or may not be rule violating, I will sometimes reply and ask them to clarify their post. Some members will reply "just ban him and be done with it", but I do like to be clear as to what I am banning someone for. So, that may appear as if I am looking for them to self-incriminate... I guess that I am. Some may even look at it as a cat playing with a mouse, or me playing with my food.

*shrug* Whatever.

I think that this is a really good strategy. If you're going to ban someone, it's good to make sure thay're trying to break the rules or don't care about the rules.

Here's an example.

OP's intent and meaning wasn't completely clear to me, so I asked him to clarify. If he hadn't clarified, I would have gone with my initial interpretation and banned.

Who the hell do you think I am?

You know I've been scared to post in some threads lately because of these carpet bans. I think they are pretty ridiculous. Now I realize the whole "You have no rights" thing, but come on! Like a month ban just for commenting in a thread? It's not like I want to respond to some of those stupid threads, but sometimes I actually have something to say.

So you're saying they ban people because they want to?

That's not why the were picked as moderators...

All is fun and good then....
Carpet ban on this thread.

Anyway i think carpet ban should be done if it is against the rules and people are bunping it.

Did you become aware of this after the physical act of love when a profound sense of fatigue came over you?

If so, don't shun the presence of women, but make sure that you deny them your essence.

So many mods in one thread.

Is this a bait for mods.

Carpet bannings are so inconsistently used that as a policy, I would remove the option to do them. The other day there was a thread here in the Septagaon that was blatant spam, and called out site administration. The first response was 'inb4lock' and there were a few other responses, one of which a moderator took upon him self to quote because it was witty, which required him to unlock the thread after banning the OP. In The Flood, a carpet ban would be used (maybe, because moderation on bungie.net is like Russian Roulette) and yet there is this stigma that the members of The Flood don't know what they are doing.

That made me very happy, watching how it was resolved. Nice one.

I am sure they wouldn't go through all that trouble just to carpet ban a thread. It is all just on the moderator's judgement, the subject of the thread, and what the posters are posting in it.

I agree that it would make no sense for mods to go to all this effort. There are plenty of posts and threads that can result in locks/warnings/bans without this.

No, we would never intentionally bait users in this manner. It's far more trouble than it's worth.
