My Worst Bungie moment: not seeing giant stuffie grunts in the Bungie store.

Sounds like paranoia. *looks over shoulder*

Citizens of Me! The cruelty of the old Pharaoh is a thing of the past. Let a whole new wave of cruelty wash over this lazy land.

Hear the word of Pharaoh. Build unto me a statue of ridiculous proportion. One billion cubits in height......that I might be remembered for all eternity!

And be quick about it!

If someone makes a statement that may or may not be rule violating, I will sometimes reply and ask them to clarify their post. Some members will reply "just ban him and be done with it", but I do like to be clear as to what I am banning someone for. So, that may appear as if I am looking for them to self-incriminate... I guess that I am. Some may even look at it as a cat playing with a mouse, or me playing with my food.

*shrug* Whatever.

I think that this is a really good strategy. If you're going to ban someone, it's good to make sure thay're trying to break the rules or don't care about the rules.

Here's an example.

OP's intent and meaning wasn't completely clear to me, so I asked him to clarify. If he hadn't clarified, I would have gone with my initial interpretation and banned.

Now that is a great, and fair way to moderate.

Carpet bannings are so inconsistently used that as a policy, I would remove the option to do them. The other day there was a thread here in the Septagaon that was blatant spam, and called out site administration. The first response was 'inb4lock' and there were a few other responses, one of which a moderator took upon him self to quote because it was witty, which required him to unlock the thread after banning the OP. In The Flood, a carpet ban would be used (maybe, because moderation on bungie.net is like Russian Roulette) and yet there is this stigma that the members of The Flood don't know what they are doing.

Yeah, I disagree with carpet bans. It's inconsistent and it's not fair to ban folks who just replied to a thread. I was once banned for asking for clarification of what was in the link in what I had yet to learn was a spam thread, since I was afraid to look at the link.

Except I also see no problem and am perfectly willing to (as people say) "carpet ban" in order to show people that "enough is enough".

Well, carpet banning may be annoying to those involved, as I know from experience (note to all: never participate in a spongebob parody thread spam fest :p ), but it does keep the website in check so that annoying posters are not constantly taking away the value of potentially interesting conversations. It's like spanking a child on the wrist for disobedience. Let's them know they've done wrong, and helps them not to do it again.

On topic: Do the mods bait us?

I don't think so. They also said they don't bait us.

So no. They probably don't.

No need to bait, the members put enough blood and chum in the water already.

Moderators probably have more exciting things to do then just fish for bans. Not to mention that the moderator selection process is hopefully more troll proof.

I don't really see how it makes sense or conveniences them to "bait us" either.

Really the 3 day ban didn't bug me, it's that I lost my title! But eh, not to big a deal. It took a while to get it though...

  • 11.26.2011 12:10 AM PDT

I know I have posted in some questionable threads in the past, I am very grateful I have never been under one of the carpetbans. I have moderated on the EA forums for about five years now and I've learned a lot of forum etiquette and I take pride in being a good member on forums.

As for whether moderators bait users into bans, I don't think they do here at Bungie.net. If you've moderated a popular forum for any length of time, you'd know that users get themselves into trouble. Then moderators catch flake from the people who were banned and are usually bombarded with statements saying they're abusing their power, baiting users, or any other number of untrue things.

When it comes down to it, in most cases if you're banned, you deserved it and hopefully you bounce back from the ban and become a good contributing member of the forums.

I would like to think that moderators have better things to do with their time than make alternative accounts and bait members into breaking the rules.

Why would they want to ban more people than necessary? The mods aren't that sadistic.

No, we would never intentionally bait users in this manner. It's far more trouble than it's worth.
So if it wasn't so much trouble, you would?
I don't think that's a fair reading of what I said. I said that it is not worth the trouble. And I think that most of us would do just about anything that WAS "worth the trouble." That's what being "worth the trouble" means -- by definition.

The fact remains, however, that THIS is not, and will never be, worth the trouble.

I r guy who gun to teach u lesson

I have a bad feeling about posting in here(even though nothing will happen)

OT: No, mods don't sit there and ban people for fun. I just wonder if they check each post in any thread they carpet ban(which I would think they obviously do). It just seems really bad that pages can all be spam. Of course if its a, say, "porch" thread you should know better then to post in it.
