Subject: Lock this thread...

If I am not posting, then I am reading what you might have posted.

Why do people ask this? They should just let the topic die.

What do you guys think?

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

You can't kill something that never lived.

EDIT: I thought you were making a random topic to spam, my bad.

I think users should just PM a ninja to lock it so they don't make spam.

Irrelevant and off-topic, dude.

OT: Probably so it won't keep getting bumped after the discussion value has gone. It's actually the responsible thing to do.

I think it is the right thing to do.
Plus wonder if any of the mods really lock any of them.

I tweet?

What are you talking about, when Ken posts he is the topic.

OT: I never understood the reasoning behind it either, it's down right silly.

I've never seen a mod lock a topic on request unless it was already in violation of one of the rules.

But does the OP have the right to do that?

As recon says, one does not "own" a topic.

But lets say the thread is about a commonly asked question, the OP figures it out and just says please lock. Users who have that question miss the thread and the answer and then continue to make an identical thread.

Why would you let the topic have a slow death when you can just put it out of its misary?

If you let the topic keep on going, the thread will recieve many off-topic posts and pointless spam and the majority of the posts will be similair. After getting a question answered, there is no need for more discussion because, well, as I have already said: The question has already been answered.

That is, if you like getting you question answered 24 times, then let it live. I myself would rather just have the thread locked and move on, instead of seeing it on the first page for a few days, and have the topic of the thread totally change.

Case and point: don't worry about it. Girls start getting boobies pretty soon, and then you'll have plenty of other things to think about. Being an Inheritor is not a life goal.

I don't understand it, I really don't think it's up to the OP to decide when the thread is over.

To do what? Change the topic of their thread to request a mod to Lock it? Of course they do! What kind of a back-assward question is that?

As recon says, one does not "own" a topic. Completely irrelevant. You're not locking the topic, you're requesting that a Moderator take the time to do so.

It could end up serving a greater purpose which could be usefull. But it depends we must let a mod to answer this question for us.

I say if the mod feels it needs to be locked, they should handle it.

The OP should not destroy the thread, they could always PM a mod.

People are going to make identical threads no matter what happens. Just because it's locked, doesn't mean people can't read the thread and get the answer...
I believe the OP has a right to request a lock. It's up to the moderator whether to carry out the request.

I disagree. If the OP, the person who created the thread, wants it locked, they have the right to ask for a lock via editing the OT. PMing a Mod takes much longer, especially if one does not know which Mod is and is not online. (Excluding uStalk.)

I can do what I choose to with a thread. If they don't want me to have the ability to amend my OP, then they can take that ability away or change the Forum Rules. Until then, the Ninjas aren't allowed to punish anyone for "destroying" a thread and asking for a lock.

Plus, think of the most common situations in which a lock is asked for.

1. Wrong forum. Reason: Very Valid
2. Question: answered. Discussion: over. Reason: Valid
3. Thread: derailed. Discussion: over. Reason: Very Valid

Well who cares we need a forum ninja to help us out here. And so far i have not seen a problem with this idea, ever going against any of the rules.

Who cares if it is not against the rules, as long as the community is still productive.

Why are the Mods always our references? I mean, yes, they do have prior knowledge about Bungie.net due to their experience and is partially the reason why they have the position that they have. But in this case, it is a matter of opinion, not fact.

Because mods are apparently the end-all-solution to any topic of discussion, they're so wise and all-knowing. They can also read minds and can tell us why people request locks on their own threads. Also they increase views and posts in a thread, almost a near guaranteed hot topic.

The only relevance they have in this thread is whether or not a mod will honor a request.

When you make the title Please Lock and the body of the thread please lock it has no discussion value and takes up forum space as spam.

But it already served it's purpose e.g. the question has been answered. How is that spam and a waste of forum space? It's not like they're just making a thread saying "Please lock".
