The Grunts are sleeping because they're used to cold temperature. They live on an ice planet.

Actually, the Grunty Homeworld is sort of swampy with natural pillars of flames from the ground. (Methane atmosphere, duh) This info came from our fav Grunt...Yap-Yap! In Halo: The Flood, Yap-Yap was having a dream that he was back on his homeplanet, and he was running along home...Then the Elite woke him up. There is also strange stuff about great carved stones as walkways on the planet. Forerunner maybe? And they do wear those suits to keep cold and breath. So... A cold, methane filled swampy planet with Forerunner artifacts? Hmmm...

I think they sleep in the cold area so when they wake up they dont have to travel far to get the ice for their morning pina colada.

Grunts are nocturnel, so thats why they sleep thoughout the day, and they breath Methane which is cold and thats why they have pionty or curly methane tanks on their back and on their face (not their @$$) they have methane masks

Men, we led those dumb bugs out to the middle of nowhere to keep
'em from gettin' their filthy claws on Earth. But, we stumbled onto
somethin' they're so hot for, that they're scramblin' over each other to
get it. Well, I don't care if it's God's own personal anti-son-of-a-b*tch
machine, or a giant hoola hoop, we're not gonna let 'em have it! What
we will let 'em have is a belly full of lead and a pool of their own blood to
drown in. [pause] Am i right marines?

I think its funny, first of all, pillars of fire would be a real hazard in a methane atmosphere (think methane+oxygen+fire= no more planet), unless of course there was no oxygen, in which case there would be no pillars of fire in the first place. As far as I know, methane is a byproduct of anaerobic (without oxygen) respiration of bacteria in the stomach, therefor I find it hard to believe that anything could survive off of methane. From what I understand oxygen is very neccesary to release the chemical energy contained in methane. Unless the grunts eat some form of oxidized mineral ( which wouldnt naturally occur on a planet without oxygen.. duh) than there would be no way for them to use the methane. If there was water on the planet, than technically they could split the water into hydrogen and oxygen, which would require much more energy than it would produce.

Another thing left unexplained, is how come the grunts don't explode when shot at, or how they can talk through their masks...

Well thank god it's just a video-game.

actually, if u think about it, there is a way the pillars of fire would work. first of all, there is no oxygen in the atmosphere. from the ground, oxygen is expelled from sometyhing deep in the planet. as soon as it comes in contact with the methane, it lights on fire, since when together in extreme concentrations, O2 and CH4 are so reacative

We're on the brink of something as exciting as the release of Halo 2, and yet you're more interested in sleeping grunts? Maybe they're asleep because this thread is so tediously inconsequential. The geek answer would be: according to the Halo book trilogy (sacred be thy names) and various other sources, Grunts comes from swampy cold planets. Why would they hibernate in their Own Natural Habitat? If anything they ought to be more alert.
You're reading too much into it man. They're asleep because the Game Designers (yes, game, honestly guys, it's not real...) wanted it that way. So you could silently melee them. Like pistol-whiping on a larger and cooler scale. Assault-Rifle-whiping.
