Subject: Encouraging Community Activity During a Blackout

Ever since Bungie left Halo and are in pursuit of creating their new awesomesauce universe, I've watched the community slow down, a lot. There has been a thread a day asking for a weekly update, and yet nothing has been published as of yet. In fact the most activity I've seen in a few months is when we were hazing DeeJ ( For those of you who live under a rock, that's the new assistant community manager) So instead of me writing this horribly boring intro just to create some context for this post that just reiterates a bunch of things you already know; I'm going talk about the issue at hand, which is that it's getting incredibly boring around here waiting for something to happen.

Let's Make Something Happen
I think we should start writing weekly updates again, however it doesn't even have to do with Bungie's game, that'll happen when they think the time is right to release that information, it will merely jumpstart community involvement. In the Weekly Updates you could talk about what is happening in the Bungie Studio such as pranks and various other shenanigans, you could host contests for the community to participate in and the winner gets some magnificent prize, the weekly group showcase, Member of the week, Video of the week, Photo of the week, Topic of the week, Epic Threads, community carnage livestreams, your options here are virtually endless. I would read it, it would be better than the majority of the writing I have to read in school.

-You could have the community contest based on just about anything, such as ''Photoshopping DeeJ's face on a pirate'', ''Who can build the prettiest lava lamp with a CryEngine SDK?'', ''Can You Auto-Tune it?'', ''Caption This Screen Shot'' stuff like that let's us know you're watching, think like Bungie All Stars, just based around the forum community.

What could the winner of the weekly contest receive?

-A shiny new forum title that says the '' Winning'' until the end of the week, then they have to compete in the next contest to continue being top dog.
- A Crimson Steam Pirate Code
-Their work plastered on the front page of Bungie.net for the rest of the week

More Controversial ( Or just plain funny) Employee Ninja Posts

These attract a lot of attention if you think about it, plus if they keep delivering a good laugh or two, people are going to keep coming back
[stoner/hipster persona]'' Wow man, did you see what Captain K Mart did?''
''No man, wha'd he do?''
'' He totally posted like 5 pages of -blam!-ion analogies''
'' No way man''
''Yes way, check it out dude''[/ stoner/hipster persona]

You won't even have to write anything for these mini ''weekly updates''
You can give a community member who is willing to write the ''update'' the information, media, ect. that you want put in and they will write it at their leisure. Then the next week you can give a new member the opportunity to write the ''update'' and so on, until of course Bungie is ready to release the information about their new IP. Then DeeJ should take over.

I'm done for now. I might update it later, I'm bored so I wrote this.I hope you enjoy my poor attempt at making and elmicker's level topic

Discuss YOUR ideas, to increase community involvement, or what keeps you coming back here.( Even though we already know it's the free food

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I think Deej and community carnage should team up and Bungie should stream live video of community carnage and we should have an official mini-story for it on the front page with screen pics.

I would <3 more contests but people have to be willing to participate. The alter Deej's face contest didn't really move at full steam.

I agree I forgot to put community carnage in there, thanks for reminding me.

Your ideas sound great. It would be great to have things still flowing around here though there's nothing of epic proportions to talk about as of yet. It feels sort of like a kid thinking about his Christmas list in June.

What Epic does is they have made themselves a free Twitch account, and play in something called ENCON every few weeks.

Basically, forum members and employees play in verses games in GOW3 and the game is live streamed on Twitch (and there can be thousands of people watching a single game). And employees often give out codes during that time.

Bungie did the same thing for Halo Reach Bungie day. It would be awesome if employees got involved in Community Carnage to attract more people to participate.

But even in darkness we should do a lot of community stuff.

Case and point: don't worry about it. Girls start getting boobies pretty soon, and then you'll have plenty of other things to think about. Being an Inheritor is not a life goal.

I think we should just have an old fashioned cook-out.

This is a great idea, actually. Too bad there is about a one in 56 million chance they actually do anything like it.

Dianna Agron is the epitome of perfection.

Quinntology.

I miss Humpday challenges. Not like they could bring them back or anything. And I miss KP. And the days of Halo 2. And Pillage. And Sniper McGee (<3).

Bring all of that back and instant 2 million active members. Just sayin'.

@spaboolly

I'd be up for writing that.

And I agree we should have some more community interaction. The Community Carnage was fun and I think everyone who participated had a great time. The Bungie All Stars was fun too. I always looked forward to seeing it in the weekly updates. Some type of weekly or monthly event or tournament that everyone could get involved in would be awesome. Maybe at one point we could have a community version of Achievement Hunter's office HORSE tournament.

They don't have to do anything really, they can just hit the Approve News button if that's what they want to do. I'd write it, of course I would put more effort into it than a forum post.

I would love to see the community stay active, but most projects never really lead any where...

The problem with The Community Carnages is that half the time they get a lot of interest, and the other half they barely get any. Some kind of employee involvement would probably change that, but the chances of it happening are very slim.

EDIT: (Completely forgot my main point) I think the best chance of us keeping an active community up until Bungie announces their next IP is to have some level of employee interaction, hopefully greater than a few posts in the forums every so often.

I think this "Dark Period" is good for Bungie and for the community as well. It's not un-natrual for a community to slow down and speed up again. This specific dark period is unique because Bungie has nothing to do with Halo anymore so they can't really talk about it; not to mention they are working hard and building something new that they hope is as impactful as Halo.

Community is still active the way I see it. People who have been coming here for years will continue to do so, albeit with a more 'relaxed' approach.

Personally, I hope Bungie doesn't announce their new game until it's ready. This could be up to 1-1.5 years from now. There's a large number of problems when announching games too early. Of course, you don't wan't to take too much time either.

I believe bungie employees should be given room to do their work and not spend time on this much. Although some new interactive ideas, really mini weakly updates with some challenge or something.

Overall its better to be quiet if you are supposedd to be dark as this will keep things from leaking.

No, it can actually hurt you if you stay dark with no activity at all for a long time, ( More than a few months), a bit of your community will forget about you and you don't want that. My goal of this post was to try to get something started that would jumpstart community involvement even if it seems stupid, it actually helps the sale of games a lot to have a strong community to ''stick it out'' with a developer even if they quit their prized franchise.

Maybe teasing the community with anything of their new game or an ARG a long one, with some prizes on the way, like BagoSwags etc, to make people try to get them, maybe a Destiny T-shirt.

Although a long one
