The term "carpet ban" implies that the moderator simply banned everyone without using proper judgment. Most everyone involved in the "carpet ban" were people who replied to each thread, harassing the OP (who deserved his ban for spamming up the board) and derailing his threads. Others were people who had a warning similar to this.

Don't reply to spam threads. You SHOULD have reported the thread and not replied.

In fact, when you see obvious spam threads with some people banned and some people who aren't, it's because the ones who were banned were already warned for something similar.

The 'grave injustice' of carpet banning threads assumes that the bans are done without taking into account the offense and each user's ban history. This is a faulty assumption.

I prefer the term "tactical nuclear banhammering."

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

Eh? I know a few people who were caught in the ban and had no history.

Maybe they said something they shouldn't of in the spam thread.

What do you mean by that? Offensive or just unrelated and unnecessary?

All of the above. Replying to spam is spam, and replying to spam with spam is just as bad. I know people that just say "cool story bro", etc and are the first targeted.

Bur if you are unknowingly caught in a carpet ban, the best thing is to of replied in a mature, non-flaming, or offensive manner becuase the mods would ignore you for being on-topic and not breaking rules or will be more inclined to appeal your ban.
