It just seemed lacking. Too much galaxy-hopping; they're on Earth, then they're at Charum Hakkor, then they're at the San 'Shyuum homeworld, then they're on Bornstellar's planet, then they're at the capital... many no doubt amazing locations but none of them explored in depth.
Same with the characters. A lot of potential but not really explored very well. I didn't care about Bornstellar's predicament, nor the Didact's, nor Riser's or Chakas'.
The actual plot was fairly thin too. Bornstellar wakes the Didact up and then they tour the galaxy for no real reason, nothing eventful happens until Mendicant Bias attacks the capital.
I wasn't a fan of Bear's writing style, either. He didn't let us experience what was going on, just told us. Maybe it's just that I've never found the Forerunners all that fascinating to be honest; humanity is what the Halo universe is about to me. I don't particularly care about twelve-metre tall immortal aliens, just what their legacy means for humanity.
The Forerunners should never have been explored in such depth, I think. Part of their appeal was always their mystery.
That is because we are (well im not) too comfortable with getting a full understanding of everything at once. Cryptum is just opening the door into the forerunner world so i don't understand why you or anybody else would expect or even want the locations to be limited.
They simply throw alot at us then over the next ten year well will have more knowledge through art books and other media covering a good portion but not all of the forerunners.
IMO they should have spent the next ten years fleshing out the UNSC and covenant history before tackling the forerunners. Now we aren't going to know too much about everything.
The reason for them touring the galaxy is to activate the Gea in Chakas in riser so they can explain what they have to do. the entire book is a subtext for the librarian always being ahead of didact and leading him.
