Which part He wrong about? because i saw the Article on Karen's site stating that she rebuilds people from the ground up on how she thinks they should act.
It's wrong because it's completely irrelevant. Who did she rebuild? Mendez? What did we really know about him up until this point? When have we ever seen the events of the books from Mendez's perspective?

Mendez was a blank slate; his actions in Glasslands not being what you wanted/expected them to be doesn't speak anything toward the quality of the writing.

And Halsey? If you honestly think Halsey acted out of character, I would suggest re-reading the entire series, especially her journal.

Sure, you can say Traviss built a character from the ground up, but only because there wasn't much there to begin with.

Why do you automatically assume that i am talking about Halsey and medez?

You can't say i am wrong if you have no idea what I am referring to. In which we could play a game if you feel like it.

There is only one major "action" scene in the entire novel, but it's fine because the book is just so interesting. It completely changes your perception of things and twists the Forerunners into a species you wouldn't of expected them to be. But it's by no means a "bad" transformation.

SPOILERS

And it was the most epic action scene of the Halo novels. Just imagining the Falco trying to get to the portal whilst the entire Forerunner fleet engages Mendicant Bias with the Halos trying to escape was pulse-pounding to read.

END SPOILERS

It's definitely worth buying, not only does it shed a whole new light on your view of the Halo series it provides a deeply immersive character-driven storyline and is definitely the best of the Halo novels.

They were the only returning characters of any significance. We only got a small taste of Parangosky in Ghosts of Onyx, and even then, everything she did in Glasslands fit what little we know of her.

If you're alluding to the Spartans, then there's no hope for you.

I have yet to understand why fred and the other Spartan IIs were guarding Halsey from lucy and the Spartan IIIs.
They are older and stronger not to mention fred is the CO so all he had to do was tell them to cut the crap; instead he just sat there and let them bicker.

I didn't enjoy it myself, but it's worth the buy for the canonical content alone I suppose.

  • 11.28.2011 3:34 PM PDT

Once I'm finished with Ghosts of Onyx, I'm giving it a try. To be honest, I can't wait.

There is a major difference from character development and rebuilding characters from the ground up. Anton already blocked you on that debate so no need to drag it around everywhere.
Anton is wrong, you're wrong, etc.

Stop blaming the author just because you have the reading comprehension of a five year-old, grey. All the pieces were there, you were just too thick to put them together on the first go.

I really don't see character development an essential make or break in any book, especially in a book that won't have a sequel (i think?) or I might have some concern. If that's the case, whether the author slightly re-imagines someone or just has them slightly standing to the side as long as she utilizes them all in a great fashion I think it'll be a good read. I mean come on, whole cultures are redefining themselves, there's still hate amongst parties from all sides and us humans are rebuilding beside the creatures we were fighting against all these years and PLUS all the forerunner technology now available. I can't wait to read it.

Yes you should read it.

1: it's easily on of the best in the series.
2: it's probably going to be quite essential to fully understand the scope of the story from H4 and on.
3: it gives great insight in the Forerunners and the Halos/Shield Worlds and Flood.

It's simply an essential read if you like the Halo books.

True. That said, I downloaded it because it was twelve pounds when it came out and like hell am I spending that much on a hastily written game tie-in book that wasn't too great anyway.

I wouldn't call a 340+ page long book that was written over the course of about a year "hastily written", and it's not that it wasn't great, it's that you didn't like it, there is a difference between fact and opinion. ;)

It just seemed lacking. Too much galaxy-hopping; they're on Earth, then they're at Charum Hakkor, then they're at the San 'Shyuum homeworld, then they're on Bornstellar's planet, then they're at the capital... many no doubt amazing locations but none of them explored in depth.

Same with the characters. A lot of potential but not really explored very well. I didn't care about Bornstellar's predicament, nor the Didact's, nor Riser's or Chakas'.

The actual plot was fairly thin too. Bornstellar wakes the Didact up and then they tour the galaxy for no real reason, nothing eventful happens until Mendicant Bias attacks the capital.

I wasn't a fan of Bear's writing style, either. He didn't let us experience what was going on, just told us. Maybe it's just that I've never found the Forerunners all that fascinating to be honest; humanity is what the Halo universe is about to me. I don't particularly care about twelve-metre tall immortal aliens, just what their legacy means for humanity.

The Forerunners should never have been explored in such depth, I think. Part of their appeal was always their mystery.

That is because we are (well im not) too comfortable with getting a full understanding of everything at once. Cryptum is just opening the door into the forerunner world so i don't understand why you or anybody else would expect or even want the locations to be limited.

They simply throw alot at us then over the next ten year well will have more knowledge through art books and other media covering a good portion but not all of the forerunners.

IMO they should have spent the next ten years fleshing out the UNSC and covenant history before tackling the forerunners. Now we aren't going to know too much about everything.

The reason for them touring the galaxy is to activate the Gea in Chakas in riser so they can explain what they have to do. the entire book is a subtext for the librarian always being ahead of didact and leading him.

O hai

Yuup, gives great backstory to the forerunners and helps pave the way for halo 4

  • 11.29.2011 9:43 AM PDT

"We knew the world would not be the same.
A few people laughed, a few people cried, most people were silent.
I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad-Gita.
Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince that he should do his duty and to impress him takes on his multi-armed form and says,
'Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds...'
I suppose we all thought that one way or another."
- J. Robert Oppenheimer

Cryptum will definitely change the way you see the forerunners. I'd definitely recommend it, also since I'm sure Halo 4 will have a lot of things based from Cryptum.
