Typcial. So many people are clueless about Brutes.
You guys do realise that in First Strike, Brutes set up a very effective ambush against a whole TEAM of Spartan-II's (including John, Fred, Grace and Will) and managed to kill Grace and nearly kill John?
That's better than any Elite unit has ever managed in a single engagement...
The Elites have gained the victory over entire colonies external and internal ... I think the result a little more meaningful than a single ambush... dont you think?
Let me break apart how the Elites win these "massive victories" over colonies:
- Send in Grunts/Jackals to weaken/distract enemy to hell with minimal Sangheili forces for support
- With the enemy overwhelmed with the lesser troops, send in Elites; but usually these Elites make use of active camoflauge anyway.
- Use Hunters to back them up whenever they encounter heavy resistance (usually when Spartans turn up...)
- After comparatively little fighting by the Elites, they glass the planet.
This isn't to say that the Elites aren't good fighters; they're strong, agile, shielded and just generally adept in combat. But the exaggeration of their combat effectiveness is obvious. When it comes to engagements, a squad of five Elites are not as effective against a Spartan team as a squad of five Brutes. Brutes are just faster, stronger, and generally more dangerous.
Brutes lack in patience, not necessarily tactical awareness. But if you put the Brutes in place of the Elites on most of the engagements down on the ground where Elites were used, you'd probably find Brutes doing the job exactly the same....if not better.
Elites are better as naval commanders.
