Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

You have coup, who cares?

And why use third party support etc. Why not use what bungie gives.

How about this. I get to have a custom avatar and nobody else does.

Glory and fame, blood is our name!
Souls full of thunder, hearts of steel!
Killers of men, a warrior's friend!
Sworn to avenge our fallen brothers!
Sons of the gods, today we shall die.
Open Valhalla's door!
Let the battle begin, with swords in the wind! Hail Gods of War!

Couldn't really care less since we still have Coup. I guess it'd be neat for non-coupsters, tho.

Can someone tell me what's wrong with these two, this made me LOL hard.

In addition to having inappropriate avatars, having avatars located on a 3rd party site would increase page load times. Plus, as anyone who's used Coup knows, the majority of you have terrible taste in avatars, anyway.
Do I have bad taste?

*looks at Neogaf forums*

Nope, no rampant avatar pronz.

*looks at escapist forums*

Nope, no rampant avatar pronz either.

*looks at BF3 EA UK forums*

Nope.

*looks at various other forums, fails to see any avatar pronz*

So why can everyone handle the maturity but B.net can't? Something tells me the "pronz avatars" argument is just a cop-out.

I agree with this 100%. I don't see why Bungie.net can't have custom avatars, but I really don't care if we do get custom or not.

There comes a time in every mans life... and that time is not now.

I really don't understand the push for custom avatars. You guys have coup, use that. I don't want to see all your avatars, thats why i stopped using coup. This way everybody is happy.

Because he would rather not have to use Coup...?

Was that a real question?

Depends on where you go really. Most people in private groups actually spend their time and make really good coups that don't make your eyes bleed, that's one of the reasons why I stick to just posting PGs most days. The main forums (especially the Flood) are a whole other battlefield...

I've said this before but I only use coup for the custom avatar. I have everyone's coup blocked so I can have the standard viewing experience of this site, and to be honest... It's so much better.

I'll have to try that, I can't even read some posts because of the backgrounds and font colors.

I disagree. Though I didn't notice it before I had coup, I couldn't go back. Once you've tasted coup the default site gets so dreadfully boring visually. And really, coups don't bother me, they make it so I can recognize other members and add a spice of visual flare to the site. The default avatars on the site are just not interesting, and they are quite lacking in vibrancy.

Those kinds of coups are annoying, but I don't block their whole coup, just their foreground colour so I can see their text. I do it as I go, every time I see one that I can't read.

Are you saying that Steve Perry is terrible taste?

I honestly don't believe that not having this is anything other than an excuse from doing work by the webteam. I do understand that this website is above average in terms of not using a generic forum template, but this feature is just about everywhere else. Thousands upon thousands of other prominent websites & forums have custom uploading options. In most of these cases there is a pixel and file size & type limit. There's also the option of uploading to the website or using a hotlink.

I have actually not heard of any cases of somebody using an extremely inappropriate images for their avatars, which means either the staff elsewhere are extremely good at their jobs, or it simply does not happen often.

Look at Deviant Art. Their policy requires avatars to be ~50x50 and less than 100kB(it's actually less but specs aren't in profile page anymore). You have to upload it to their servers so it decreases load times.

Or Roosterteeth. They are roughly the exact same age audience as is prevalent here on B.net, and yet they can use custom avatars without any condescending "you're too immature so you can't haz". Go take a look.

While I realize that we have been able to provide a great service for the community through scripts, in particular Coup d'Bungie in its various incarnations, this sort of thing is very basic to a forum and isn't much to ask, especially when a community is generally being completely ignored by the very people they joined the community because of. Once the initial mass exodus upload is finished, load times will decrease again and everybody will be happy.

In my opinion, an account holder needs to demonstrate that they are worthy of being able to have access to such a feature - that they can be trusted with it. They should have to build up that level of trust to a high degree because of the possibility of exploitation with such a feature. In other words, someone who is a longstanding member with a high amount of trust is unlikely to "throw away" their account by uploading something inappropriate, because it [their account] is worth something to them - their account is special because it can do things that other, regular accounts cannot.

But dazarobbo is right. As big as b.net is I believe Bungie would only allow those they trust to have controls like that, i.e. moderators/employees.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

For the longest time, I thought that custom avatars should be included as a reward for getting and maintaining a certain trust rating. I thought it would give people even more incentive to behave, and think before they posted, else they could lose their avatar due to being banned.

I don't think this would work anymore. The "trust rating" isn't really working IMO. While we can't really see how trust is tabulated, we can see how its rewarded. The titles are the only real indication as to how its dispensed, and I at least don't think that being "Legendary" or "mythic" actually warrants any more trust than any other titles. I see plenty of Mythic, Legendary, Heroic, who don't contribute at all. I see plenty of regular untiteled members who contribute a lot. That's not saying that mythics etc don't contribute, its just saying that the titles clearly don't indicate real trust.

So, because titles really don't mean anything, I don't think it would be a good idea to use that system to hand out potentially tangible rewards.

I don't think Ninjas should have the ability to hand out custom avatars either. We can gauge threads and posts on whether they follow the rules, but we have no business, need, or reason to further build the legion of sycophants who want some perk. There's already a lot of griping from the peanut gallery criticizing pretty much everything the ninjas do. The Septagon would be further replete with requests for custom avatars and accusations of corruption if Ninjas had control over something so noticeable. We're not qualified, nor do I believed should be trusted/burdened with such an obvious problem inducing feature. We're here to enforce the rules, not to be the Community's Internet version of a Letter to Santa Claus.

Instead, I think that if custom avatars are ever implemented, they should be wholly controlled and given out by Bungie. Perhaps as rewards for contests, similar to the Webcam MVP title. Perhaps similar to how Recon Armor was dolled out in the past. If you did something Bungie liked and noticed, you could get some pretty little hat in recognition. Perhaps if you stuck with Bungie during this dark period, you've shown you're a true fan, and custom avatars could be added for some/most/all of us here right now in recognition. Also, I think that there should be a definite limit as to how often avatars could be changed. Once every 6 months or something, so people can't abuse the perk, and so they have to maintain some sense of permanence, so we're not inundated with crap ala Coup.

There are a lot of potential methods of distributing custom avatars, that would actually be a reward for something good that was done, instead of being part of some ambiguous system. We all know Achronos has said that custom avatars will never be a reality here, but if handled correctly, they could work, and be much less problematic than just letting anyone upload whatever they want. We know that if given the opportunity to even sort of make custom Halo 3 avatars, loooooots of people used the grenade emblem and some trickery to make genitalia-ish silhouettes. I certainly remember that, even if seemingly none of you do (probably because I had to ban like a thousand people for it). Though that problem was there, and proves an earlier post about the sudden freedom thing correct, there are ways around it. Its not a problem anymore, because Bungie figured it out, and the mods banned for it. Even with universal general custom avatars for everyone, we'd go through an initial shock of bad things, but it would settle down eventually.

Or, we could not change anything, and continue the status quo. Which has worked fine thus far. Or we could allow universal and general custom avatars for everyone, and let the chips fall where they may. I honestly don't care. I don't pay attention to avatars much anyway. I just wanted to post my reasoning and some ideas for the future.

Though I have been wondering what will happen to all the Halo avatars when Bungie drops its new IP. Will we still have them? Will they be removed? Only time will tell, but its worth mentioning in this kind of thread.

I can understand people wanting to personalize their profile. To want to express your own individual persona is human. Good taste and tact come to mind. Now define those two words. Everyone will come up with a slightly different definition. Such is the trouble with letting us have our own avatars. Is it in good taste or bad? If it is in bad taste, who perceives it to be in bad taste?

I don't think its a good idea. There are way too many pervs and immature minded people out there and I personally don't care to see what they can create/use as an avatar.
