Subject: I think Bungie.net needs an "IP stalker"...

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I know Bungie.net doesn't have IP bans but I think IP's should be monitored. Seeing all the shock site spammers and their frequency in several forums it is evident this is needed in dealing with the war with alts.

If someone tries to sign in on the IP of a banned user, a ninja is given an alert (like for a collapsed warning in a thread).

If like 5 or more profiles are banned on a single IP, I think at that point the system should begin issuing bans to all newly made accounts on that IP.

Thoughts? conerncs?

IP are easily changed and any professional shock-siter probably does so regularly.

Raw IP address has as-good-as no correlation with identity. It takes an undue amount of effort to collate the required information, an effort the web team almost certainly aren't going to expend given the number of moderators qualified to do the task, and given the ease with which IP addresses are masked.

Why are you even suggesting it be used? You clearly don't understand the mechanisms you're talking about.

If I logged onto the internet at my University's dorm, more than likely, I'd be banned because of some douche bag somewhere else on the campus.

Only if your university is quite literally -blam!-. Uni's the only place I've had a static IP for the past 10 years.

Make it a timed IP ban and have it so that a new account under the same IP can ask the privilege of being un-banned but watched.

I like the idea; but I don't know how it'll affect the site.

Like a warning sent to mods alerting them. Becuase they can judge whether it is a troll alt or a legit new account.

Bungie.net does collect IP data.

It's only the B.net, you know.

No, I'd rather frantically spam various moderators' PM boxes and the report button than deal with a hit and miss system that gets innocent people banned.
'' The road to hell is paved with good intentions''

People on static IP's would get banned regardless of whether or not they did something wrong, not to mention that it can easily be circumvented.

I'd always thought that IP bans were issuable on Bungie.net, if only to act as a slight annoyance to those who make new accounts to spam.

Also, IP bans (or any other punishment/system involving an IP) are generally pointless as it takes no time at all to get a new IP address.

As far as I can tell, they can only ban you through cookies.

Yes and that is what I am suggesting like you said, an annoyance to shock site spammers. I would <3 a system that recognizes a high number of bans on a certain IP and watches accounts used on that IP.

The Shock site spammers and alt trollers now have more work they have to do.

Ah, well I guess that could work at a further deterrent. Just as long as they don't know they're being watched. ;)

More like Recon's idea of banning a user but they don't even know they're banned. I call it torture.

No, it's dynamic that changes.

Think like types of climbing rope. Dynamic stretches and static doesn't. : )

I don't know who's right, but I do know who's pompous and generally very holier-than-thou.

And Achronos has IP banned in extreme occassions in the past if I'm no mistaken.
