"all that damn gas"...

I find this quote to be quite a window into how Forerunner's built their colossal constructs.

The gas mines, such as the ones we visited in Halo 2, use this gas as basically the building blocks of all Forerunner alloy.

and by this I mean that I believe the forerunners had some form of altering the atomic structure of gas particles, and magnetically charging them to stay so close together that they become a solid.

Solids are basically just a configuration of atoms that are so close together that there magnetic field does not allow anything to pass through them, thus rendering the overall mass of atoms, a solid.

This, I believe is the concept that Forerunners used to turn gas into solids, so that they wouldnt have to use any preexisting solids to "smelt" into a form of metal.

They had many ways although your idea of turning the gas to solids is mainly based on compressing the molecules which is not that effective as you will need a huge volume of gas to compress or cool down, and these would spread out after released.

Also charging them is exciting electrons which later means that the electrons will then drop to a lower level always by releasing this energy. This is how electricity works excite electrons they go up in energy level, and then drop and the energy is passed to another electron in another atom.

yes but if the molecules were held together by a g form of generated naturally occurring magnetic bond that holds them together would result in the molecular structure not coming undone. I just used charging in an inacurate way.

and a planetary sized source of gas from a Gas giant would most certainly provide a massive ammount of molecules for use.

Most probably true.

Don't they use 'hard light'? Unless I'm misinterpreting what that actually is.

they only use "hard light" or "semisolid holography" with displays and control panels. they couldnt possibly use that for an entire ringworld or else when the master cheif destroyed it it would have basically "vanished rather than explode and set ablaze

Now I remember.

Yeah, actually the entire Halos are made of 'hard light'. Same with their ships. I would imagine the Ark is too.

I'll find you a source.

Edit. Maybe not. My memory was slightly jumbled. They use hard light as a 'protective shell' around structures and whatnot. Carry on OP. :)

Glory and fame, blood is our name!
Souls full of thunder, hearts of steel!
Killers of men, a warrior's friend!
Sworn to avenge our fallen brothers!
Sons of the gods, today we shall die.
Open Valhalla's door!
Let the battle begin, with swords in the wind! Hail Gods of War!

No you were right. Cryptum stated an actual majority of a standard Forerunner ship's total surface area, internal and external, is composed of hard light. This gives the advantage of their ship being able to take on almost any form the Captain needs. An example would be when Didact smoothed his ship in Cryptum to make it more aerodynamic for an atmospheric entry.

This is actually an interesting thought, I'm going to add a little real science in here and suggest that instead of using some magnetic thing to alter the atoms (this wouldn't work I'm afraid-you could induce a plasma at most) they would use Fusion to build whatever elements they desired from the harvested gas (likely to be Hydrogen).

This would also provide a source of power for the installation.

You could build any atom you like from Hydrogen assuming you have a sufficiently controllable fusion reactor (the Forerunner almost certainly would have the technical capability to do this) and you can get energy from it untill you start making atoms heavier than Iron.
At that point you can still force fusion to occur and build heavier atoms, but it costs you energy to do so.
