Subject: Don't Be a Jerk

What exactly qualifies as "being a jerk"? I suppose it varies from person to person, but I'd love to hear what you guys think.

This website was intended to be a friendly gathering place for the Halo/Bungie Community, yet I've noticed that several users feel the need to bag on particular ones and/or be generally dick-ish. Why the hate? Why the rudeness?

Foman recently mentioned to me "a line". Where do you guys think that line is? What do you feel crosses the line of -blam!-gery into a realm where you feel Moderator intervention should occur?

The line is just past sarcastic joking and just below legitimate ad hominem. For some people it lies somewhere in their own delusions.

There's a disturbingly large amount of people who take legitimate arguing or honest debate as insulting or being "mean". Lots of people need to learn that they're not always right, and that they aren't always going to be coddled and told you're an amazing person.

At the same time, others need to realize that just because someone is incorrect that the assertion of dominance in the conversation is not required to get your point across, and it often makes you come off as holier-than-thou and to those who recognize it, it diminishes the legitimacy of your point by mixing it with rudeness.

In short: not everything is an insult, but at the same time not everything has to be an argument/fight.

I think that the "line" exists when somebody is either being openly hostile or spends more of their time being rude then they do actually contributing to the conversation.

I would say that that is a fair opinion. I do believe that my own opinion lies somewhere along those lines, as well. :)

I agree. I'm often getting things like "lol diz is da interntz stop bein butthurt" and things of that nature, but I really do find this place to be kind overall. I don't appreciate the douches around here; I feel that Bnet is different from the rest of the Internet.

I hate when people act like jerks. I get some hate on here sometimes (for mainly just being very active becuase I like coming here). But flaming is sometimes not easy to spot becuase not everyone is so troll obvious. But if people are flaming on the forums, they should be banned or warned depending on the severity of their actions. We are a united community, we should act like it.

Upgrading a PC is so hard. You have all these updates, and disks, and what not. When it comes to upgrading a Mac, it's easy. You just take your old Mac, throw it away, and go buy a new one!

Yes, indeed. It's actually rather funny how smug people can be when they try to insult you, Ken. I actually received an insult not that long ago saying "because you post as much as Ken" and I was just like "orlynao". However, I don't feel this rule is enforced enough. Oh well.

Actually, I've yet to see Ken flamed where he deserved it, nor have I ever seen him be unnecessarily rude to anyone, but that's not the matter at hand.
