Subject: Don't Be a Jerk

Just past sarcasm, or sarcasm if insults are included after. Basically you should be able to express dis-satisfaction with a post, even be sarcastic about it, but once you start insulting and degrading someone there needs to be intervention.

Upgrading a PC is so hard. You have all these updates, and disks, and what not. When it comes to upgrading a Mac, it's easy. You just take your old Mac, throw it away, and go buy a new one!

Fine, you may not be aware of it but you are a HUGE dick on The Flood.

There is a difference between attacking a post or idea and attacking a user.

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

This article is a great reference material. I had a bit of a laugh while relating it to the B.net community.

Basically, when you feel you have more say in a discussion or feel the individual accusing you of being a jerk has little knowledge of what he/she is arguing about, you will obviously defend your point/yourself.

You know you are right and you know the other guy is wrong. Now, while you state the fact that you are right and he/she is wrong, a lot of people tend to act a bit sarcastic or superior to the other in an indirectly rude way, therefore being a jerk.

Some people have very soft feeling you must remember to be gentle with! Sissies..

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

Thanks for telling me, I try not be a "dick" to fellow forum users in my responses. I will try and be more courteous, I am sorry if I offended you.

Because I said " attacking a post is the same as attacking the person", right? See right here I was a bit of a smartass because I never implied attacking the post and the person is one in the same. but I never insulted the POSTER just the POST. but if I would have added some insult at the end of my smart-assery, that would have been different, then I probably should have deserved some form of contact from a moderator.

I'll jerk whoever I please.

  • 11.28.2011 6:31 PM PDT

Isn't it defined in the rules as "attacking a person who posts, rather than the post itself"?

If I say "You're an idiot", I've attacked you rather than your post. If I say "That point is idiotic", then that's not being a jerk, because I'm attacking whatever point you're making. I don't know you (most likely). I don't have any basis to say that you're an idiot. However, your point is right in front of me. I can judge that.

It's a rule that is intended to be grey. The more grey area Bungie has, the less rights the end users have. The purpose of this rule is simply to give them the right to thwart anything they deem "unfit" for their website. From a programmer's perspective, that's a brilliant idea. You don't want someone vandalizing your Eiffel tower, after all.

Going out of your way to antagonize someone.

Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -
Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell, / Buried alive;
But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

I just told you. Do you know how supreme court justice Potter Stewart definied adult enterntainment?

edit: missed the last name
Jerk stole my post. Oh well:

I shall not today attempt to define the kinds of behavior I understand to be embraced within the shorthand description "being a jerk"; and perhaps I could never succeed in intelligibly doing so. But I know it when I see it.

I think being a Jerk is people in coup D bungie, and most of the flood. The line you you speak of to me is crossed when a forum member doesn't obey any of these.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

So I'm not allowed to be a jerk anymore? When did this happen? Yet another memo that never saw its way onto my desk...

I don't really have a reason to post anymore if I can't be a condescending jerk to everyone. Better go dark myself.

OT: Flaming, excessive trolling, name calling, stalking, a penchant for calling out other users, etc. All are included in the Jerk behavior category IMO. Like OPR said, its hard to concretely define, but I know it when I see it. I think it was intentionally designed to be interpreted broadly that way, as another user mentioned.

Well we might have a hard time defining what "being a jerk" is, so instead of trying to define that, maybe we could all just be nice? I'm sure we have a firm grasp on that.

I just saw a green monkey nut shot a small tan lizard(?) in a gunny sack.

I act like a jerk because I feel like it. I'm a jerk in real life too. Don't really care if it bothers anyone, I don't know any of you, nor do I care to. I learned to focus on what gets said instead of how it's said a long time ago.

Well each Moderator has their own view as to what crosses the line when it comes to someone "being a jerk". I however believe that Moderator intervention is only needed when it gets to the point of harassment, flaming, or trolling.

Positive vibes.

Personally, I respect and care for everyone equally, however, there are one or two people who's case I might get on a little more than others, because, well, I'm simply trying to help. I wouldn't call it being a jerk, so much as being a friend.

Let's start from basics: What is a jerk? Someone who is mean, or has done something offensive.

Now that you know the basics, let's move on!: How do you prevent being a jerk? Don't be a jerk.

Self explanatory. The "line" is basically just being nicer, so don't ever go below neutral karma, or you'll be entering the quarantine zone.

I think a lot of people come on here and act like they're tough and have this sarcastic demeanor about them because they can't act that way in real life.

We are gamers and a lot of gamers get picked on, people should feel comfortable coming on here and socializing. They should not be shunned or treated badly by people who probably aren't so popular and good looking themselves.
