I've never been a fan of such initiatives. First, I feel they are simply too confusing/confounding toward new members. Second, they shift people's posting habits away from honest conversation toward modeling behaviors for what would garner a reward. Moreover, they would simply develop stratification on a bigger scale and escalate conflict much in the same way the Recon armor did in Halo 3.

Rewards are fun, but visible rewards on the site that linger tend to cause more problems than they are worth. I'm also not a fan of forum rewards because new members will become discouraged as they will feel inferior toward others. That should never be the case as we thrive by new members bringing their conversation points to the forum.

A more tangible reward like swag is a better idea, but as with forum rewards, that puts a strain on the company while they're hard at work developing the true reward: their new universe/game.

I agree, but if anything is to be given, it should just be done with a reason, with no checkpoints to reach. If people act in certain ways then let them, act.

Although if you want to implement this, then you will have to create titles for those who are not following the rules as well, or are annoying, jerks, etc.

If you make a title it should be for all members, and depending on their characteristics.

No new base titles.

I am really hoping Achronos goes through with his idea from a couple years ago and gears the titles towards Bungie game participation, in which users would be able to pick from a variety of titles relating to their playing styles. This would remove the bulk of people changing their behavior for a title in the forums, since the better title / reward would be completely subjective.

I also support that type of system, but I'd like to see a more hybridized title system as well. One that reflects both your Bungie gaming and behavior/habits on the forums since both are part of the community whole. Say that your forum habits could be a base title that is unchangeable, but your gaming style and participation would unlock certain prefixes and/or suffixes for your base title. That way you're rewarded for not being a jackass on the forums but perhaps "rewarded" for being that jackass who camps in the little room with the shotgun.

Just a thought.

I agree with big D, let the players choose their own title. If we can't give players the option to make their own title, due to immature users, then at least give players the option to choose between the titles they've earned.

Although Ken finally made a point, a few new prefixes are needed.

Everything is interesting if you go into it deeply enough.

Posted by: x Lord Revan xAgreed. People will always try to modify their behavior to achieve what is implied to be the better reward, or title in this case. In my opinion, the titles should be a representation of one's natural forum / game habits, not hurdles towards a finish line title in which people actively change their behavior for.
You're just agreeing with him so that when this system is implemented you'll be rewarded and people will respect you!

Whoo.

Achronos will probably hate this idea, plus a system that isn't automated on a website with this many members would be horribly impractical.

Basically, I make the best topics ever.

Feedback!
Duardo: This thread is locked for being stupid.
cortana 5 : It's perpetually my time of the month and I'm just grouchy.
Foman: I see absolutely no reason, either theoretical or practical, that this is not a superb idea. Excellent work, my friend.

Titles are the issue, NOT the solution.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I am glad I know people hate it, forums are used for feedback and if not many people like it, I guess it shouldn't be used.

But people don't seem to realize I am proposing something that most members will never achieve. A more positive reinforcement to posting to encourage people here to be nice, host and participate in more community events, and to not break any rules.

The ONLY title that would probably be automatic is "mentor" which I think should be called Wise One on the title bar.

Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.

I like the simplicity of it now. Good ideas though.

Then why did you waste time thinking it up and typing it out? Better yet, why would the web team waste their time implementing it if it's rarely going to see any use?

Well maybe that's a little more practical, although I'm not sure how you'd automate mentor and everyone will complain about moderator bias, but ignoring that even if everyone loved it as long as Achronos hated the idea then it ain't happening and Achronos (I've read) hated the idea of Webcam MVP, probably has a general dislike for titles altogether.

Becuase I notice all the remarks here about having some new privileges and awards for behavior and conducting certain actions on the forum that are deemed to be "honorable" (yeah thats a good word for it).

The simplest and least work to acheive that goal (I thought) was the creation of several titles awarded to users by the web team and mods for being helpful, hosting community events, etc.

The Battle title for example lets newer users know that the user with that title is in charge of hosting events and they have a "privilege" to post topics/news on the Bungie.net homepage about an upcoming event (assuming newsfeed come back).

Think of these as awards, not titles you earn normally. Thus they will be less common than standard titles and should be, thats the point.

Everyone already complains about bias moderators, so nothing new there. But you were still correct with this being nearly if not completely impractical.

As for Achronos outright hating titles, I feel if that was the case we wouldn't have the current system. No, I think it's more likely that he hates how they got implemented and he's commented before on his idea title system.

The sound of iron shocks is stuck in my head, The thunder of the drums dictates
The rhythm of the falls, the number of dead's the rising of the horns, ahead
From the dawn of time to the end of days I will have to run, away
I want to feel the pain and the bitter taste of the blood on my lips, again

That sounds like a neat idea, but I haven't bothered to change, or even care about my avatar since I installed coup.

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Not to be a -blam!-y Bertha, but it seems like more trouble than it's worth to basically get the system we have now (if you mean replacement, since having two prefixes is pretty excessive). As well, I really don't like the idea of the reward titles just because it promotes ass-kissing. I think the titles we have now that are governed by a system is fair and are simple enough to be just titles.

Because that's the thing, although everyone has different colours and words in that bar, they're all aesthetic. Once you start giving giving out badges to people, like your system would, in the form of special avatars and prviledges, it starts putting those users above the others. Whether it means to or not, it will be implying one member's superiority over another because of their special priviledges.

But then it's just titles on a website. Maybe we should all just chill and enjoy the company rather than what they're wearing.

What's the benefit of that though? It's only going to encourage people to try to find a shortcut to the reward, usually through rule breaking means.

Look at the current prefixes for example. I doubt Achronos intended for people to actively strive for some of the prefixes. I gained the impression that they were merely implemented to be rough representations of how people acted in the forums naturally over time. Some users are replying to old threads in The Classifieds over and over, attempting to go unnoticed, with spam posts in hopes to get the Intrepid / Fabled prefixes faster. There's no benefit to the community in that, rather it just more useless noise and clutter in the forums.

The titles should be natural representations of forum / game behavior, not necessarily an incentive to change one's behavior, especially through rule breaking ways. The only way I see the removal of that incentive is to make the title's worth subjective, and your suggestion of making new titles extremely hard to obtain would just incentivize unnatural behavior changes even more.
