Hi.

If people play games for the reasons you are suggesting, why is Halo 3 not being played more than Reach?
Assuming the rate at which both of the games' populations are falling stays relatively the same, Halo 3 will eventually surpass Reach. What happens then? What's the explanation for that? The only thing would be the game itself; Reach has a lot less longevity, and for good reasons.

Did you give her a biased explanation?

My answer is on the top of the page. All I have to do is show her--or anybody--why people feel the way they do towards AL or any other game mechanic. Once you abuse it, its flaws should become apparent.

Nope. SouthPole isn't a person. He's the avatar of the force of tryhards everywhere. He stalks the web looking for retards to set straight. He can not be stopped by mere bans or thread locks for he shall rise anew.

I would love to be able to go and play Halo 3, but it's not the "in" game. Reach is the current Halo game, so that's what I'll play.

I had a feeling you'd say this. No, Halo 3 will not surpass Reach and it is impossible for it to do so in this year before Halo 4.

Most of the AAA titles have shipped. Reach is going to be in a snug and relatively fixed spot at 7-10, perhaps moving up a bit once Skyrim dies down. After all, it is a campaign-only game.

Only reason I'm still here is Forge, though it's been a year now and people are so tired of FW's palette.

Reach doesn't even appeal to the casual community like COD does. There's still the skill gap, no matter how battered it currently is, it's still there. Casuals aren't going to like that. They're going to go play COD.

Wanna know who Reach appeals to? The bad Halo community. It's literally a Halo game made for the bad players.
The competitive community doesn't like it, the casuals don't like it, the bad players do.

Seriously, go to a midnight release for a game and complain about armor lock, how it breaks the game, etc. etc. and see just how many people know and/or care about what you're talking about.

Most, if not all of them will be bad players. Those guys buy the game no matter what. It's the actual gameplay that brings in the rest of the population. Reach doesn't have good gameplay. It doesn't bring in anyone. It barely holds onto the competitive community for obvious reasons, and it doesn't draw in any new players because...well it sucks.

The two players I told you about could have become Halo fans. If this was around Halo 3's time, I'm sure that they would have liked the game.

All about bells and whistles these days. I have to admit that Reach doesn't have all the bells and whistles that people want and that's why they aren't appealing to anyone anymore. I choose to play Reach mostly because it's less irritating than most other games out there and play the CEA because that's the Halo I grew up on.

It's funny you mention that. I googled "Why is Call of Duty so popular" for kicks, lots of unsurprising responses on Neogaf.

"It's fast, has explosions, -blam!- loads of guns, lots of rewards and looks alright to boot."

"Positive reinforcement. Everywhere."

"Men like guns. And real guns in particular."

"Huge Marketing + Casual Friendly Gameplay + "Deep" online = Success"

"Dudebros like to high five over guns."

"Young adult (primarily American) males like guns, war, and violence. Mix that with a huge marketing push at that = success."

Most telling, is this ...

"I think the modern-day setting helped, along with the conflict that was happening at the time."

Your average red-blooded Joe Smith is all about 'takin it to the terrorists!' from the comfort of his own couch. To them, shooting at aliens is just silly. Personally, as some one who served during the middle eastern conflict, I can't stand the CoD games, mainly because they fail to represent what war is really like. It's not all face paint, big guns, and hurrahs.

You give Reach way too much credit. Halo 3 was the first Halo game on Xbox 360 Live. It had so much more going for it.

Without exaggeration, I don't think it'd be much of a surprise at all if Reach falls off of the top 10 chart a short time after Halo 4 comes out. Like you said - Reach was catered to casuals completely because it's a good marketing decision, but casuals flock to the newest game and don't provide longevity to games, which is exactly why I think that, after Halo 4's release, Halo 3 will surpass Reach.

Ya that be bout right on the money. I never can stand the CoD games anymore. That and Battlefield is starting to get up there in the BS-meter not only due to savagely abused mechanics, but the servers tend to get really bad really quick. Beginning to wish Rainbow Six was popular again...those were good times.

If you haven't noticed by now, I'm sort of a jerk.

I have a friend who's an extreme casual gamer, literally moves onto whatever the next blockbuster game is, and said in quote:
"Halo: Reach is the only Halo title that actually deserves to be called -blam!-lo, Armor Lock is literally -blam!- trash. Juggernaut in Call Of Duty 4 was more tolerable". It's not just competitive gamers.
Posted by: SouthPoIe

Posted by: Viper Skills

She also got her first taste of armor lock from someone who absolutely despises it. No offense to you and I'm sure as hell not defending that trash, but it's a biased introduction.

Friend came up to me, he has never played a Halo game before, he thought that I liked Reach so it wasn't because of me, you wanna know what he told me?

Dude, Armor Lock is so -blam!- -blam!-.

Even the casuals hate Armor Lock. The only people who like Reach for Reach are the bad players. That's the majority of the current population.

H3 will pass Reach at that time simply because it's a prequel to H4.

I don't think Halo 3 will pass Reach. I think Halo 4 will simply blow them both away. Don't get me wrong, I would love to play Halo 3 for the next year instead of Reach, but I don't think that's a possibility.

Unless they fix the netcode (which, from what I have seen, is the reason people who hate Reach, and prefer 3, even play Reach instead.) I don't see it happening.

  • 11.30.2011 6:46 PM PDT

Posted by: SouthPoIe
Another example,

One friend who was really into COD. He said that COD took more skill than Reach. I didn't argue, just asked him why. He said Armor Lock and Bloom. He wasn't a very big Halo guy, so the other flaws like OP grenades and no bleed through didn't make themselves apparent to him.

I then asked what he thought of Halo 3. He said that it takes a lot more skill than Reach and COD.

Everyone with an IQ above table thinks (knows) this game sucks. The whole "Halo just isn't as popular" explanation doesn't make up for the fact that we're not even in the top five population wise anymore.

Those are nice stories. I don't believe you. I think it's odd that you happen to have so many friends who don't play Halo, yet have opinions about the game that agree with yours.

I can understand how Armor Lock can be annoying, but how does Bloom decrease the skill level required to play the game? If anything, Bloom would increase the amount of skill you need to kill someone.

Your last paragraph is really stupid. Just stop complaining about things that nobody cares about and enjoy the game.
