Seriously, go to a midnight release for a game and complain about armor lock, how it breaks the game, etc. etc. and see just how many people know and/or care about what you're talking about.
Most, if not all of them will be bad players. Those guys buy the game no matter what. It's the actual gameplay that brings in the rest of the population. Reach doesn't have good gameplay. It doesn't bring in anyone. It barely holds onto the competitive community for obvious reasons, and it doesn't draw in any new players because...well it sucks.
The two players I told you about could have become Halo fans. If this was around Halo 3's time, I'm sure that they would have liked the game.
All about bells and whistles these days. I have to admit that Reach doesn't have all the bells and whistles that people want and that's why they aren't appealing to anyone anymore. I choose to play Reach mostly because it's less irritating than most other games out there and play the CEA because that's the Halo I grew up on.
It's funny you mention that. I googled "Why is Call of Duty so popular" for kicks, lots of unsurprising responses on Neogaf.
"It's fast, has explosions, -blam!- loads of guns, lots of rewards and looks alright to boot."
"Positive reinforcement. Everywhere."
"Men like guns. And real guns in particular."
"Huge Marketing + Casual Friendly Gameplay + "Deep" online = Success"
"Dudebros like to high five over guns."
"Young adult (primarily American) males like guns, war, and violence. Mix that with a huge marketing push at that = success."
Most telling, is this ...
"I think the modern-day setting helped, along with the conflict that was happening at the time."
Your average red-blooded Joe Smith is all about 'takin it to the terrorists!' from the comfort of his own couch. To them, shooting at aliens is just silly. Personally, as some one who served during the middle eastern conflict, I can't stand the CoD games, mainly because they fail to represent what war is really like. It's not all face paint, big guns, and hurrahs.
Ya that be bout right on the money. I never can stand the CoD games anymore. That and Battlefield is starting to get up there in the BS-meter not only due to savagely abused mechanics, but the servers tend to get really bad really quick. Beginning to wish Rainbow Six was popular again...those were good times.
