I respectfully disagree. I believe these are the reasons that many people have left Reach.
1. Halo is getting old- Look at the other titles of other games that are coming out right now. Gears 3, Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare 3, Assassins Creed, and Skyrim. Halo 2 and Halo 3 didn't have nearly as much competition from other game developers since it was still in the beginning of Xbox Live. Halo 2 was the reason original Xbox Live was alive for as long as it was.
2. Reach isn't competitive - You don't even need to win to rank up. That is VASTLY different from the other Halo games. The entire competitive spirit is gone. Commendations make it so killing is actually more important than winning the game. You can just sit in a game and not get any kills and rank up. What kind of competition is that? Even if you have the competitive spirit to win the game, that doesn't mean your opponents have the same thing. Which in result, creates a social game.
3. The Maps - I know a huge number of people that don't like Reach simply because of the maps. Whatever your playstyle is, maps are alway a problem. Why are dynamic spawn in Slayer gamemodes? Why is Invasion Spire incredibly overpowered for Elites in phase 1? Why is Swordbase still in Arena?
4. Quit Ban/Mute Ban - Are you serious? There needs to be a different penalty for quitting than giving a 15 minutes timeout. Firstly, the problem is credits. Since everything in Reach revolves around credits, the only thing to do is have people not gain them. Remember, winning doesn't mean anything in Reach, so you can't take away "XP" like you could in Halo 3. The entire quit ban is atrocious and it's directly because of the credit and ranking system in Reach.
Mute ban is even worse. Why would a company put a "banning" system in charge, where the consumers can control it? Halo 2/3 worked great! Didn't like a person talking? Just mute them yourself. I currently have the opportunity of being mute banned right now. Let me tell you something, it sucks. There is no notification that even says you're mute banned, you basically find it out yourself. I checked all my settings and searching with friends they even found that I was muted automatically. I don't even trash talk before of after games. Anyone that has played with me here can attest to that. Sad thing is, I don't even know how long it lasts. Could be days, weeks, or months.
If anything, Bungie has spent a great deal of time making player investment worth something in Reach. But that isn't the reason that people have quit. There was even less customizable armor in Halo 3, but even after you unlocked everything, people still continued to play. You know why? The game mechanics and the maps are fun. People played to win to rank up.
None of that happens in Reach.
