Hey folks. I work in a library in Canada, and we're doing a thing where we choose a popular game (in this case, Halo: Anniversary Edition) and recommend books that people who like the game might want to read or movies to watch (in this case, Ringworld, Ender's Game and the Alien Triology). We'd like to use the logo from the game on the page.

While I'm aware that we could probably use the Halo logo on our library page and no one would care, sue or notice...well, I want to do it right. (Must be a library worker thing. All boxes must be checked.) I checked Canadian copyright law, and as we're not reviewing the game itself, I don't believe that using the logo falls under Canadian Fair Dealing provisions.

So, need to ask permission. Anyone have an e-mail address for Bungie Legal (or whoever would be more appropriate)?

Probably want to check with 343 Industries since most of the copyrights probably got transfered to them.

Hi. My name is Sean. I've been a Bungie fan since Halo launched. Some of my interests include games, exercising, laser tag, martial arts, movies, music, sports, and technology. Feel free to contact me at any time.

You would actually contact Microsoft for this, but I would suggest taking a look at the Game Content Usage Rules first.

Whisper Game Studios - shhhh, it's a public secret.
Webcam MVP
Sarsion.net
Bnet PM Policy

[*Please note that anything in my posts is likely to be filled with sarcasm, and should be taken with a pinch of salt. I tend to help people, usually*]

This might be what you're looking for.

Edit: Dang it, Crypt.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

This, if you were talking about Marathon, Pathways to Darkness, or Crimson Steam pirates then you contact Bungie legal.

Bungie no longer owns:
Myth series
Oni
Halo series

Huh. Already contacted Microsoft and they said to contact Bungie.

Ah, copyright law. How I love you not...

Thanks, though. Those Usage Rules seem to be what I've been looking for.

OK, reading it over...

You can't use any of Microsoft's trademarked logos or names except in the ways described in the pages linked from www.microsoft.com/trademarks.

This does denote that Halo is a trademark of Microsoft, though.

Aha!

http://www.microsoft.com/About/Legal/EN/US/IntellectualProper ty/Permissions/Default.aspx#ELB

For the people of the future, you can use a box shot fairly easily, see the info on that page.

So are you just going to use a box shot then, OP?

Halo3Planet, the place for all things Halo 3..

Need help finding skulls, make sure to go here.

It would fall under fair use because you're using it for non-profit educational purposes. You don't have to worry about anything.

Actually, it wouldn't as we're in Canada and don't have Fair Use. We have Fair Dealing, but that's not the same.

http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/C-42/ for that one.

If I were reviewing the product, it would apply, or in very particular conditions for being a library, but not in this case, as far as I can tell.

Also, yes, we'll use the box shot. Looks just as good for this purpose, and it's quite clear about it.

Well, good luck, OP. By the way, what library do you work at? I'm gonna check out the page out of boredom later.

http://www.princerupertlibrary.ca/news/pixels will get you there. Wasn't actually written by me, but by a student working for us this fall. I'm just the webmaster. :)

Well, that's pretty cool. I do believe that this is the only Halo: CEA-related thread that's ever been posted in this forum that actually belongs here.

Come back anytime if you need something.
