Subject: Are Smiles considered ASCII art?

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

You know:

:p :D :/ -_- =_= (>0_0)> Q(0_0Q)

Though Bungie.net lacks official smiles, people (including myself) often use these small text symbols to express an emotion.

I wanted to know how members feel about using fake similes and if they are considered ASCII art. I haven't seen or been banned for posting these faces but I was curious seeing how ASCII art is spam.

Or does the rule only apply to obnoxious text objects?

“Oh, it’s a little bit of everything, it’s the mountains, it’s the fog, it’s the news at six o’clock, it’s the death of my first dog, it’s the angels up above me, it’s the song that they don’t sing, It’s a little bit of everything.”
- Dawes, A little bit of everything

Yes, smilies can be considered ASCII art.

As for my opinion, I generally dislike them. You mention not being banned for smilies, and that's understandable. It's the full post sized stuff that I think they care about as that just takes up a lot of room and (while sometimes being hilarious) is annoying.

Unconvinced: I am far more interested in the Elcor technique of conveying emotions.

Admittedly: Although, I do tent to use :D to convey that the previous sentence is only a joke and shouldn't be taken seriously.

In terms of the rule against ASCII, obviously not.

The rule against ASCII art is if it doesn't add to discussion. Adding a ":)" on the end of your post is okay, and I suppose to a lesser extent simply posting ":)" is borderline okay, but since it doesn't add to discussion, it could maybe annoy a Ninja enough to have a warning sent your way.

But posting the Picard facepalm, for example, is entirely inappropriate, in any situation (even if the joke wasn't old and worn by now).

I was wondering becuase a lot of users use smiles in their posts to express emotions but they can be considered ASCII art. Which is supposedly against the rules, but is not enforced.

I suppose if it is not too distracting and not too large it is okay?

All moderators have common sense - no one's is going to ban you for using a "smilie" in your post.

Unless perhaps in the example laid out above^

Informatively: I'm sure that emoticons aren't against the nature of the rules, even if they can be considered as ASCII art.

Everyone is entitled to their own wrong opinion.

I'm part of the Bungie.net Minecraft group/server called SeptaCrafters
We're a Bungie.net group that goes to our very own Bungie server. Most players are from the Halo community either off Bungie itself or through word to Halo friends.

Are you talking about stuff like this?

That's a small one. But I've seen huge ones that take up a ton of space.

I don't ever see a reason to use them, to be honest. If you can't convey an emotion in words and have to use "symbols" that are meant to be used in short "text-like" messages that don't have loads of content or context.

The use of them on a forum isn't really needed. Though, if you really, truely wanted to use them, I think a good rule of thumb would be if it's only 2 or 3 characters long, it should be fine. Any other "smileys" are, frankly, stupid in my opinion and have no place in a discussion forum when you can take your time and use your words to convey emotion.

I lol'd at the absurd miscommunication that occurs whenever dibbs post something. Perhaps his brain is so highly evolved that he can no longer clearly communicate with lesser life forms, even among his own species.

Unless you're a robot or an author, emotions aren't supposed to be conveyed through words. Ever wonder why every curse word has a hard consonant in it? It's because the sound of the word expresses more emotion than the word itself. I guess I could convey my emotions with "That post made me smile" but since I'm not a robot, I'm lazy, and smiley faces are so mainstream, I'd rather just write :) or =) or :] or =].

And if the above isn't a good enough reason for you, that fact that doing it actually bothers other people should be.

I wasn't shocked to see something like this from you as I returned to Bnet, Ken. Smileys are clearly acceptable, my post is an example of what isn't. Yet it clearly depicts my current state of distress. How this topic could be honestly created? The thought floods my mind.

Dazarobbo used smileys before. Everyone has used them before without getting a ban.

I would however love the rule to apply to smileys only when used by people who sign off their post with a ":)". It's so dumd, especially when it's completely inappropriate for the topic, it's annoying (looks at a cat being a little rascal outside).

Haha, I was banned for the pioard facepalm a few years back. My opinion of it is that smileys are fine, as long as they arent used extensively.

"Spam" is stuff that takes up space but doesn't contribute to the conversation. Smilies can contribute to the conversation by clarifying a person's tone. I'm sure they could be spam if someone just posted the Great Wall of Smiles to be annoying.

And no I'm not just saying that because Foman posted above me.

Sometimes I wonder if you just make threads to improve your post count.
Why the hell would posting smilies be a bannable offence?
It's called common sense Ken, try using it before you make another thread.

Well according to le rules ASCll art IS considered spam. Smilies CAN be considered ASCll art. I am curious of the moderations view of this and how the community feels about this.

How is this NOT a leitimite thread? I am curious about something in the rules that affects a lot of people.

So before you go again to flame me (which is against the rules BTW and a bannable offence, which YOU should of known before you began attacking me) and say I need "common sense", you should note that this thread is about and relates to the Bungie community and the COC on Bungie.net. If someone from moderation has an issue with this thread, I would assume they would lock this thread if I did any wrongdoing.

Smilies can considered ASCII art, but they aren't. They are smilies. And people have used them for years on this site without anyone getting banned or offended because it's obvious that they aren't spam.
I'm not getting into a flame war over this, because there isn't even anything to discuss.
