Subject: Not allowed 0 second respawn? And other pointless limitations...

Why did Bungie prevent us from selecting 0 second respawns in Halo Reach? The options are something like 3,4,5, 10, 15. Why not allow the user to input an integer? It would be much easier. This type of limitation occurs all over the game settings. Like in kills to win. You can pick 10, 25, 50, 100, 200, 500. Why can't I just type in a name integer of my choice? Whats wrong with having kills to win at 298 or whatever? It's just lazy coding from the programmers at Bungie.

I know this type of limitation occured in Halo 2 but there was a way around it - you could transfer the gametype save to your PC and manually edit the hex values in the save. So you could change the 3 to a 0 and have instant resawn. Or chang the kills to win to 67 or whatever . So this proves that there is nothing in the game engine stopping it, it's only the poor gametype editor that prevented it and Halo reach is the same.

It hurts the community when you put annoying limits on things for absolutely no reason, I hope 343i learns from it.

Well at least it stops Shootin' and Lootin' boosting being easier.

And this matters... why? You just found something new to complain about, good job.

Pretty sure there is a very valid reason.

There is no valid reason. I can't believe you blindly trust Bungie like this. If you see an obvious flaw in a game you just assume there's a reason for it. You are certainly wrong. I improved many of my Halo 2 gametypes by having instant respawn times amongst other things.

Because I'm a programmer and it irks me that they are so lazy. It'd be so simple to allow the user to input any number. It just frustrates me when I want to select a particular number but can't because someone at bungie didnt do their job properly.

Yeah cause it's not like the engine is nearly a decade old or anything.

  • 12.02.2011 11:35 AM PDT

There is no reason. 0 respawn is simply a novelty.

Yeah i want to set up games with a kill limit of 9 999 909 and each kill at odd numbers has to be a AL kill for it to count etc.

So..? How often are you going to cap a Slayer game a 28 kills or KOtH time to 314? This is pointless getting worked up by.

Think about how annoying it would be if your post had to contain exactly 50, 100, 200, 500 or 1000 characters. It would annoy the crap out of everyone. That's how I feel with regards to the limitations on the game settings.

It's certainly NOT just a novelty. It speeds up the game and definitely improves certain gametypes.

I agree with OP here. Why can't we just put in our OWN values for things like movement speed, damage, respawn time, gravity ETC?

Yeah they can allow the user to input any number, but they didn't want to, it's their game and they are going to set it how they want to, it has nothing to do with being lazy.

R.I.P. Halo 2 <33333333
Do not play halo much anymore. Barely ever come on here.

There is no rational reason to put such limitations on the game. Are you really saying that they wanted players to be limited to these particular values? They sat in a boardroom and decided "Well, 50 kills and 100 kills would be a good amount to win on. But allowing someone to set the kills to win between those values would be catastrophic. It would always ruin the game, no matter what the other settings are". The fact is that no discussion took place and the programmers just did it in the easiest way possible, resulting in us not being able to choose individual values.

When Halo CE came out, I wasn't bothered by it. When Halo 2 came along I just figured that they should've learned from their mistakes but it didnt reall matter. Then Halo 3came along with the same unecessary limitations and I started to wonder if they actually ever learn from their mistake in previous games. Then reach game along with yet gain the same annoying limitations. I now realised that they aren't trying to learn from mistakes.

Games are supposed to get better over time, not have the same crappy mistakes in. In reach they spent a lot of resources on addeding crappy gimicks like AAs while doing nothing to improve simple things like the gametype editor.

It's certainly NOT just a novelty. It speeds up the game and definitely improves certain gametypes.

"Certain gametypes" meaning those novelty "party" gametypes?

To implement a custom kill/respawn number would be too much hassle anyway.
Do you personally look through all loadout names when creating a gametype? Custom numbers would have to be implemented the same way.

I certainly wouldn't want to scroll my way to a 50 kill limit just because the couple people who make novelty gametypes wanted novelty settings.

Hey, uh, if you like vs threads, then check out this little group right here, if you have the time. It's pretty fun, just hop right in.

Because it takes a few seconds for the game to decide where to put you?

*Shrug*

Hardly matters.

Meaning many gametypes. If you had a choice, would you choose to stare at the respawn screen for 3 seconds or carry on playing the actual game? Eliminating respawn times would create a more action packed game. You could apply this to standard Slayer games or even MLG games or whatever. It doesn't have to be limited quirky gametypes.

A keypad (like on a calculator) could appear where you enter the number. Not hard to implement. Not difficult to type a 5and a 0 into it.

Here's a 0 second respawn slayer gametype. You can edit the gametype however you want it but just don't edit the respawn settings or you may not be able to change it back to a 0 second respawn (or if you want to edit the respawn settings, you should probably make multiple copies of the gametype). This gametype is used for Octagon, which requires no respawn time. There may be other variants of Octagon out there (I think there's a CTF variant) so if you can find those, you can edit them too.
