Please don't hype for games...
They'll just fall short of your expectations and you'll complain for months.
The reason why reach's population is so low is that the new generation of gamers hate halo. That's all there is to it. Halo 3 came out in 2007, 4 years ago. Kids that are 12 now and obsessed with CoD were 8 then, an age where it would be unacceptable to most parents for a kid to play. These kids just hate Halo. They don't care about this "skill" you speak of (and as a matter of fact, probably less skill is better), only about how fun a game is. Halo simply isn't fun to play for the younger generation and they all hate it.
Think about what almost every Bungie employee on the forums has said at least once. These forums are the vocal minority. The truth is that, the majority of gamers don't care about skill and consistency. The "hardcore" population of halo probably accounts for a couple hundred, maybe a thousand people. What regular gamers care about are explosions, realism, and graphics.
