Subject: Why don't my shots hit when I am following the guy's head?

Hey guys, I started with Halo for X-box and then got it for PC so that I could play it with other people. But every time I play I can't seem to hit anybody. For example:

I was waiting behind a rock when I knew an enemy was near. I get the first shot on him with my assault rifle. My reticle is red and I keep firing. His shields don't even flare. I fire helplessly at him as he fires on me and takes me out in two seconds.

Does anyone have any tips that might help me?

You can thank Gearbox for screwing up the netcode in Halo PC forcing you to lead your shots in order to hit. If your target is moing to the side aim a little ahead of him and listen for the hit beep. When you hit remember how far you had to lead and aim for that sopt from then on. It takes practice but you will eventually get it.

Thanks a lot, I think that should help me a lot. That would explain it though; I never had very many problems with accuracy on my X-box. Much less a PC (I'm using a mouse for crying out loud!).

Thanks for the tip.

What's wrong with using a mouse? The mouse and keyboard are way superior compared to the controller. That's why they have auto-aiming for Halo and Halo 2 but not for Halo PC, and in the future, H2PC.

Gearbox screwed up the port, so we have to lead shots. I can't help but think "WTF Gearbox? People shouldn't have to lead shots!" but I don't mind leading shots, as it's pretty fun. As Iggwilv has once said, it separates the new players from the experienced players, the wheat from the chaff. The only problem I have is that meleeing a moving target is considerably difficult since you're at close quarters. But besides that, I don't mind the leading.

I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I have nothing against using a mouse, and I actually prefer its accuracy to that of a controller's. My question was based more on the fact that I literally had my reticle spot on at point-blank range and still couldn't get a hit.

Thanks for the extra information though. That seems like a silly mistake to make with the requirement to lead shots though. That explains why I can't snipe for my life on PC and I can snipe well on my X-box.

It could be your lag. For example, if you shoot someone while you have 400+ ping, and they have <150, they have less lag and can shoot you, especially if you are standing still or in front of them. You can shoot a rocket at a hog with that ping of 400, and they won't die, it's because of your lag. What kind of connection do you have?

i think that the issue is already resolved. it's part of halo. lead your shots. a lot. after a while it becomes natural.

This is even more key with a sniper, lead a lot.

  • 05.03.2006 7:50 PM PDT

Actually I have a relatively good connection (I think). Is a connection with about 120 ping average a good one? That's usually what I have, but I think that it's leading the shots that was news to me.

It's not only Halo that has netcode and lag problems, Many fast paced online games have problems with lag, because it's just physically impossible to send the information the thousands of total miles between your machine, the server, and the other machines connected, without it taking time. Some games have very good netcode and very little lag, Mechawrrior 4 for example. Other games have completely craptacular coding. Mechwarrior 3 for example. it's netcode was so bad you had to lead your reticule about <--------------------------------------------------> this much to hit your target. I'm not exaggerating. It was terrible.

Xbox lag is next to nothing - maybe 15 to 20 ms - you won't notice it. Now that you're playing online, guess what? Yeah, your lag is horrible. That's due to two things - the internet and all the stuff in between your computer and the server you're playing on inclusive, and also due to crappy netcode. Honestly, it's about half and half. Half is simply the price you pay for switching from the Xbox to the PC, the other half is that GBX FUBAR'ed one of the greatest games of all time.

Yeah, I did misunderstand that. It's quite annoying for me to shoot someone at point blank with a shotgun and not kill them. Anyways, Halo PC could be really fun with no lag. Host a game and you'll see how fun it is, because you have no lag when you are host. The mouse and keyboard rules.

The reason there is no lag on Halo 2 on Xbox Live is simply because it requires you to have a broadband connection. Whereas in Halo PC it doesn't matter if you have 50k. Most online PC games do not have a broadband connection requirement. Not to mention the severe auto-aim in Halo 2.

Yes, probably. Which is why I get quite annoyed when people scream "OMFG YOU'RE SUCH A -blam!- RETARDED AIMBOTTER!!!!!!" when there's no such thing as an aimbot in Halo PC so they don't know wtf they're talking about.

here are some tips:

1. don't use the AR. part of the accuracy problems you're having are caused by the AR's complete -blam!-ing lack of accuracy. don't use it, except in desparate close-combat situations, and, when you do use it, don't bullet hose it, use burst fire.

2. don't forget to lead off to hit your targets because of lag, like the others said.

3. use the pistol. part of the reason that guy Posted by: pilesofnoodles
takes me out in two seconds.

is because the pistol is much better than the AR will ever be. its much more accurate, has a harder hitting round, and has a scope. when using the pistol, don't hold down the trigger, it makes it less accurate. tap the trigger instead. don't forget to aim for the head, you can down someone with three head shots if they have 100% shields and no overshield.

I'm not sure to understand what "lead the shots" or "lead off your hit" mean. Could you explain in detail?

Thank you! :-)

Well HE IS MOVING and the assault rifle isnt what you would call-uh-accurate.It kinda just flings out lead. Use the pistal its much more accurate(and has a bigger bullet). that should help some.

I think the best way to put it is everyone is a split second late on your screen. The player on the screen isn't where he's actually standing. Lets say you see someone jumping up and down and you want to cap him in the face with a sniper. At the peak of his jump he's actually already on the ground so you have to aim at his legs or crotch to register the hit.

I have the same exact problem. For me its mostly because my computer wasnt exactly "built for gaming". My wireless connection might also contribute to the problem.

you have to lead off when you're using a shotgun, the same as any other weapon.

"lead the shots" and "lead off your hit" are one and the same thing.

basically, "leading off" is aiming in front of your target, so your shots connect with your target.

in halo, it used used to compensate for lag and the bad netcode.

in real life, leading off is used at long range, high altitude, and weapons with a slow fps rating.
