Well, sure, in a spiritual sense. Not literally, but if you died, would you consider your soul male? (If you don't believe in souls, just bear with me and understand that this is all hypothetical.)

They sucked out his soul; they didn't alter his existence outside of that, necessarily. Unless there is a part of the lore that I remain ignorant of.

I'm still gonna call it a 'he'. If I suck your soul out, will it still be male? Damn right.
Male, female, mammal, biped... none of that matters when a consciousness is no longer linked to its previous physical form.
Is your browser male? Your car female? Is the Internet?
We see things in that framework because we exist in it. Find yourself no longer associated with something and you very quickly learn to ignore it as you conform to your new existence.
You were once an infant, it was how you were defined, it was core to your existence, you couldn't BE anything else. Are you still an infant? The Soul is no more male than it is human. Which is to say, it isn't. IT isn't.
What is "male?" Can a soul be male while not having a body?
By many conventional definitions of "male," all state that it has to do with physical characteristics. So, as the soul is disembodied, how can it have any of these characteristics. Therefore, it is neither male nor female. It simply is.
EDIT: Literally, it is an 'it'. Spiritually, and in essence, I'm saying it's male.
I started out trying to actually start a conversation on what makes one male or female, and if it was solely based on physical traits or if it was something mental as well. I was asking whether or not one could be male "spiritually," as you say. Then I thought that it wouldn't fit in this thread so I went back to the silly musings on the Disembodied Soul.
I don't think that discussion would belong here, although it would be a quite interesting one.
Anyway, if you can believe the myth of the Disembodied Soul, then just go along with calling it an "it" (even though "he" would be perfectly acceptable grammatically.
