I've only recently picked this up for pc, so I don't have a lot of experience with it.

I've been hooked to the "race" gametype lately, but choppy gameplay is making it difficult to drive. My computer specs are a recently installed 6800GS, AMD64 3400+, and a gig of RAM. I bumped up the resolution to 1280*1024 to smooth things out. I have noticed that my vid. card does get into the 70s temperature wise when playing. So is that the cause?

Or is it my DSL? My ping to the server stayed mostly in the 60s. I'm hoping that's not too high. Is it?

One more thing, the server I was playing kicked me for saying "damn". Right when I was about to complete a lap, someone blew me up with a rocket, it was a great shot. So I said "damn you, name here. lol" Then I was kicked. LAME. So is my username banned, or does anyone think it's an IP ban?

your videocard is definately getting too hot. I bet your CPU is even hotter. And no, that wont cause it to drop in framerate very much. It can however crash. A 6800GS can easily handle halo at 1280x1024 on high settings.

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

Typically you get better video performance by lowering resolution, not increasing it. It also has nothing to do with your connection latency.

Well, I was thinking it's probly my connection being that it's a phone line DSL, which is just unstable, but the temps I'm getting made me think otherwise. I'm gonna look on newegg for a new gpu fan. I think the stock one is just crapping out.

I know that. But anything less is just too blocky. I can't find any AA options anywhere, so I upped the res.

You can change your Anti Aliasing setting on your video cards control panel. a 60 ping is actually very good. It means you're reasonably close to the server location = less wires and junk between your computer and the server. As for framerate and lag, a bad framerate doesn't affect lag for other players, it just seems laggy to you because of the choppiness.

Personaly I prefer smooth preformance than High end graphix, So i generally keep the res at 1028 x 700, with most of the effects on medium. That keeps the game looking halfway decent, and still giving me excellent performance.

Well, I was just playing around offline and I didn't get any choppiness, but it's different without any explosions or weapons firing. So I'm gonna assume it's my DSL. Or router. I guess I'll try to get back on the server I was kicked from and see what happens. I still can't believe I was kicked for saying "damn". come on.

You have to remember, servers are basically private. People can kick you for stupid reasons or no reason at all if they're having a bad day. You can either roam silently or roll with the punches and try again the next day when whoever kicked you has likely completely forgotten who you are. Don't sweat it... authority over a server brings out the twit in many players.

I am running a 6800 gt oc agp with 2gigs of memory and a 64 3000+2.0ghz cpu and I am running at 1600x1200 res. Not a spec of problem. I would try to do a drive defrag and a scan disc . also, if you have a adware program scan for spy ware. I am running usually around 60 to 100 ping.

It's certainly lag, it has to be. Your PC meets much more than the requirements to play Halo PC. Much more. If you're tired of lag, take a break from joining other peoples' games and host your own instead, and you'll see how fun Halo PC is without lag. Either that, or you can lower the resolution.

Also, some people do not tolerate swearing. Yeah, so Halo PC's rated mature, but that doesn't mean you need to use foul language. It's just an IP ban, not a permanent ban from Halo PC's multiplayer, no one has the authority to do that.

Well, what I said was quazi-swearing. But it's no big deal since I can still play on that server anyway.

If I host a game, it will suck for everyone else and they probly wouldn't play long. I just noticed that there is a little box that appears in the corner of the screen when i "lag", I guess that means something. I'm stuck with dsl, so I guess I'll just have to get used to it. *damn my crappy uploads speeds

You need to get a broadband connection. It's not required for Halo PC, but it will help. A lot. And it's going to make the game more enjoyable for you and other.s

Don't drink to excess– You might shoot at tax-collectors... and miss

Computer: Power Mac G5 CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (2.2) Number Of CPUs: 2 CPU Speed: 1.8 GHz L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB Memory: 1.25 GB Bus Speed: 900 MHz

ATi Radeon X800 XT Mac Edition
Display Type: LCD Resolution: 1680 x 1050 Depth: 32-bit Color

DSL is usually good, and a ping of 60 is fine. The losing connection symbol you get makes me think you mak have a loose connection somewhere.

I once kicked the power strip under my desk and the power transformer for my dsl modem came loose. At first it still was partially plugged in and I was getting that symbol. Then it came out and I thoght the modem failed. Then I noticed the plug.

Check all connections– phone to modem, modem to router or computer, power to modem and router, etc.

also dont forget to chech whta your connection type is set at in halo. It may be set too high and causing and over flow of info, thus dropping you from the game.

Just play the campaign. If it seems to "lag" there then its your computer. If not, then its the servers your playing in. Thats the only way to actually know.

Good advice, TMH.

Dude - please tell me you meant 70 degrees Fahrenheit and not 70 degrees Celcius - cuz if it's Celcius, you might not have a working video card for much longer...

Boo - I could be wrong, but I think the connection speed you choose for Halo is mainly for hosting games.

no, if its 70* celcius thats not too bad. The 6800 ultra series have been known to go to 75*C. Most nvidia cars (high end like the 7800GT and up) are usually in the 60's. What I mean is that yea, that is very hot, but I dont think your card will fry. You should definately watch out though. Mines only 43*C right now.

Ah, thanks for that info, TMH - I just remember that AMD Cpus are not recommended to run hotter than like 60 degrees celcius. I suppose gfx chips are built to push the limits.

Your videocard is WAY too hot. How many fans do you have? Get more fans, and get a better fan for your video card.

Something is definetly wrong with your PC. My PC isn't as good as yours and it runs Halo at maximum settings at 1280x1024 easily. The framerate is always 50+.

Run Disk Defrag, download CCleaner and clean out all the junk on your PC, use its registry cleaner, and run Disk Check.

And on a side note i found that when you get banned from a game, it doesn't ip ban you, it bans your cd key. when i first tried to play halo pc my friend let me borrow his disk. i went on a server and some twit banned me for moderate swearing. recently i bought my own copy of halo and the servers that i had been banned from let me on. the only problem is my friend and i were trying to decide on a server to join and i picked the one i had been banned from. he told me that he got the message that "the server operator had banned him from that game". it was pretty funny and cool that you could get banned from every server but as long as you got 20 bucks to get a new cd, you can keep playing :P
