The names on the maps shown in the "Waiting for Destiny" article could give you clues to what certain parts look like. For example, there is no names in the part you show as water, so that is obviously water and we can gather information from that. It says "Palm trees" in the top left, so that would suggest Forrest areas. "Village Range" in the bottom left hand corner to suggest urban areas, and "Range" to suggest mountains (Like you have shown).
I don't want to get into the finer details. I'm happy with speculation, but I'm not going to just build content that I don't know what should go where. Leaving that for much later :P

Also, another thing I noticed about your 3D render is that it doesn't show the top third of the map. I don't know if that is because you didn't see it or chose not to do it because of the big black rectangle in the middle. The latter.

If this is a map for the actual game, I doubt we have it right, because the scale is 40,000 (Or so it seems) and that body of water seems way too large. But if it something just canon related I'm sure it would fit just right.I think it's definitely accurate. The problem is that we don't have any specific points of reference to compare to, but I personally think that mountain range is gigantic. Look at it compared to the size of the city, or town, on the other side of the water.

Good work! I like your 3-D model.

Two quick notes though:

- The two random dots on the map aren't part of the map at all, just like the giant planet in the corner of some of the b.net banners isn't part of the map. Check this out:
http://misriahsolutions.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/orbit_lin es.jpg
The stuff in red highlights what is NOT part of the map. The two dots are just part of another image that has been layered in photoshop onto the map image. This is supported by the movement of the dots and the faint "orbit lines" I've traced here.

- Upper_neb is one continuous peice from the map. Lower_neb is actually made up of three different peices from the map. Some Bungie artist took the map and chopped out different areas to build the lower_neb file for the bungie.net background. I already split them back up in this file:
http://misriahsolutions.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/oneofseve n_map_neb_final.png
Compare that to upper and lower and you can see how I placed them.

Great job though, I love seeing speculation like this!
I'm looking forward to the finished product, SonicJohn. :)

I took that into consideration. But that doesn't explain this.

AH! I see. Nice eyes. I missed that. So basically the small section I thought was new was actually already placed. Will update to fix shortly :)

Love this thread, got kind of bored of halo speculation, have been active on the search for clues till couple days ago when I have to study for exams.

Hope the new clues would be arg based, and start from tv, mainly static during any normal add and little words comming through the static and end with a site name barely seeable across the static screen.

I didn't have much to do, so I started to looking at the words on the map. Puerto Drin, the town was first to catch my eye. It's weird that the word "Drin" doesn't translate to anything in Spanish. That made me conclude that although the first letter definitely looks like D, it could also be O. This would make the name of the town translate to "Rust Harbor" (or alternatively "Urinated Harbor" depending how you want to translate the word "Orin").

Well, that's about what I could get out of the picture. I should probably also asy that it seems like Bungie has put a lot of work on that particular map. Even in the composite image it seems to be much higher resolution that the other maps. They could possibly want to hide something from us, that would explain why the word "most" is left there alone.

On a side note, does anyone else think that the map seems awfully down to earth? I mean, sure we have the planets and all, but I feel that they just don't fit very well with nautical maps. This makes me to think again when the game could take place.

I'd like to direct you to a little something.

Bungie made the entire planet of Reach.

I've said elsewhere plenty of times that I think Reach to them was a big bucket of prototypes and practices for Bungie to get themselves ready and prepared for Destiny. I think the reason they made the full world map of Reach was so that they could design the whole world of where Destiny is based on. I don't think that this is a "level map" I think this is a small fragment of a planet.

Well, we've seen in other places and articles that the game will have aspects of a sort of open-world MMO. I don't know if it will actually be an entirely roamable planet, but it could definitely be the creation of a map so you know where you are and where you have to go. It could more be that, like most MMOs, you're given an entire city design and a way to transport yourself between A and B, to get to C. I'm pretty confident this will be done on a planetary scale. Maybe multiple planets. Gah, I'm speculating like mad here.

Like, remember that New Mombasa map in ODST? Bungie only made ODST and Reach because it was in their contract with Microsoft to do "another 2 Halo games", so it seems to be that Bungie were slipping in things to test for their next IP. I think that the navigation and the city map were another hint to what's yet to come.

I really don't know for sure, though, but I've been piecing all of these things from articles and from cryptic things Bungie have said both here on Bnet and at exhibitions, panels and to journalists...and...

...well, I'm pretty excited.

I don't think so. He probably meant that we are just going to have more canon for the game such as these detailed maps and whatever Bungie comes up with. I really liked the map of Reach they made by the way, I have it somewhere between the Halsey's Journal I got from the Legendary edition.

But anyway, I don't think any modern computer could support a game that gives us the ability to freely roam around an entire planet. That'd be like 500,000,000 square kilometers (if we use Earth as an example). Of course it would be a nice and really unexpectable surprise to get something like that. But probably impossible nonetheless.

Well, we saw that mountain tool in the Vidoc, so that means there must be alot of them. Lots of Mountains = Big place.
As long as they have the tech.

In ODST there is about 4 more maps the same size as Mombasa streets on the outsides of the city walls. I see no reason why they would have put them there, unless they were testing "Stuff" out like you said.

I can tell you that it is not an MMO. If you read all of the job descriptions you will know why. I gathered it was open-worlded though.

I already have a basic outline of how the game. There is just tooooooooo much stuff to write.

They seem to have lots of time until the game comes out. By that time the technology will be more advanced than it's now. That mountain tool definitely looked really neat. I think we will definitely see big open enviroments as it has became pretty clear that Bungie likes them too.

Thinking that they have probably been making the game since Halo 3 was released we can be pretty sure that they have had a lot of time to think and even build something. Especially when they have had two "test versions" released to the public. I wonder what parts of ODST and Reach are we going to see in Destiny, definitely at least big open enviroments like Mombasa Streets.

But could you tell me, what are these four maps in ODST? I have never heard about them before nor have I seen them when I have glitched out of the map.

Really? Although, it is a long time since I last glitched out of the map. I assume this another map however isn't very detailed model, right? Because what comes to the skybox size, Bungie has always loved big maps, you can see this in pretty much every map since Halo 3. The actual playable area is only a dot compared to the skybox.

When you open your VISR and see the map. Even the bits you can enter, they are fully modelled areas.

I've been to the edge of the Forge World skybox, you cant even see Forge World from that far out.

This discussion has gone a bit off topic, but I really need to go to ODST to see that area.

But let's take this discussion back towards the actual topic that is the map. I hope it is an actual area of a level of the game. But it seems kind of odd that the level would only have one town and otherwise it would just be forest and mountains.

Your getting the wrong idea here. Halo is finished for Bungie. Do they still need to make levels? No. Anything can happen here. I hope it is open world, GTA style.

Of course they need to make levels. I can't imagine a game without a single level. You see, a video game level is much more than just how we see them in games with multiple levels. Every playable area where you can go anywhere without a need to completely load (i.e. going back to menu and selecting a level or going to a new area and getting a loading animation) a new area is essentially a level. So, even GTA has levels. More precisely, a level.

So in that, yes. Bungie still needs to make levels in order to have a playable game. But what comes to having multiple levels versus single level, I think Bungie could make a hybrid. Why not have a game where you have multiple huge levels?

This kind of system would give the advantage of bigger playble area combined. There would also be no need for sudden enviroment changes because of limited level size and in fact, each level could have it's own kind of enviroment. And last of all, if the game is going to have something to do with space, I don't think a single level can handle that.

But yes, there are lots of options other than the linear levels we've accustomed to see in Halo or a single huge level we can see in games like GTA.

So you mean it would be a bit like Deus Ex with multiple large free roam cities or like world of warcraft with large continents each being separated by a load screen?

Also, I don't know if anyone has already reported this but hey....

I was messing about on Google translate, changing drin into different languages and seeing what came up. Most languages either added and A or I. But, in German Drin means 'In It', in Welsh it means 'Treat', and in Dutch it menas 'Urgent'. Just thought I would say. Don't think this changes anything but hey.

Sorry about the double post but I just found something else. Again Im not sure if its already been said. Go on ot the avatar editor on B.NET and click the arrow on the top to move the avatar selector to the next page. The area where the avatars are will go white and part of the destiny map shows up. Th esame happens with the background choser page when the arrow is clicked. Does this change the current map?
