Well hello Shirley....

With a bit of google foo and a lunch break it would appear the map you guys have been working on is a map of Puerto Princesa in the Philippines. See this map Looks pretty familiar right?

Here's the full write up where I grabbed the image from....

I have sincere and utter doubt that they will. Their mouths are wired shut until they are ready.

I came for Halo, but I heard the Tru7h, fought thru Carnage, and stayed for Bungie.

Maybe we have researched enough to warrant an Employee response to this thread... maybe.

Once again great thread SonicJohn and kudos to the finder of the map. Now what does this give us about Destiny exactly...speculation inbound.

Perhaps this seaport is now a spaceport and is the "launching off starting point of the game" when travelling the stars?

Also this interesting mix of air, sea & land could point towards the various transportation methods and environments. Seems to be a larger scale that Halo so could fit in nicely with the game mechanics.

By air
The city is just one and half kilometers from the Puerto Princesa International Airport. Puerto Princesa is accessible by direct flights from the major Philippine cities Manila, Cebu and Davao as well as Busuanga and El Nido.

By sea
The city is served by domestic passenger ferries to Manila, Coron and Iloilo at the Port of Puerto Princesa.

By land
The main modes of transport are via tricycles, jeepneys and vans-for-hire (or PUVs/public utility vehicles). Provincial buses and jeepneys operate from the San Jose terminal located 7 km north of the city center off the National Highway.

No, you can't have it. But thanks for asking!

The Google map is a dead on ringer for the Destiny map on the Golden ticket.

I believe this dramatically increases the chances of pirates being in the game. Maybe there will be a Crimson: Steam Pirates easter egg/cameo/crossover?

edit: That place has an underground river. Wasn't there mention of a river and giant spiders in the last Mail sack?

edit2: Here we are:

O_O I didn't even think of them being the mountains in the Destiny Map ever since I heard people dismiss the film as a tech demo or something.

um... There seems to be a number stamped in the lower left of this map.

10.04.13

Possible release date is possible. :D

October 4th or April 10th of next year.

Doubtful, but possible. (extremely unlikely, lol)
Very likely actually. The game is set for Fall 2013.
Sorry to burst your guys' thought bubble but considering the overall dating of the map I am pretty sure that date it October 4th, 1913.

It is a Wiki Map, meaning that Bungie probably had nothing to do with it.

That doesn't mean Bungie can't use it as 10/4/13. It definitely wasn't made for Bungie, I know that.

My thoughts, exactly... but I still think we need to find the original version of this map.

I have the feeling that that map is probably in physical form in Port Princesa somewhere, an exact replica of the digital one barring the sticker and other pieces of evidence of replication.

It was a replication not a new edition. I'm sure it was done exactly as originally so.

How did you find this?!

I started with the barely legible "Puerto Drin" tag and when that search returned nothing, I started to take out letters that were more obscured. I tried a number of permutations and eventually struck gold.

Yep, looks like there are 3 versions readily available from the NOAA archives One in 1904, 1920 and 1951. All of them are available for free high res download, search map 4343. None of them seem to match exactly with Bungie's version. That is probably just due to some creative photoshopping but there may also be another version out there that's hiding.

(joking)Map 4342 is a map of Halsey Bay...looks like the doctor is up to her old tricks again....

Agreed. Wow!

The relative obscurity of this map and seeming insignificance of a small city in the Philippines to a game presumably based wholly or partly in outer space (judging from the numerous references to stars, moons, and planets both in the Destiny Map and other Destiny-related teasers) makes me honestly wonder whether Puerto Princesa was chosen at random because Bungie's artists wanted to use a topographical map of an interesting place for source material for concept art.

Let's not forget, folks, that the Destiny Map is concept art created by Bungie Senior Graphic Designer Lorraine McLees (reference: art credits given to Lorraine at the bottom of the 2012 official Bungie Christmas Card). Lorraine is from the Philippines. I've never inquired of her exactly which part of the Philippines she is from, but it certainly seems possible that she has a personal connection to Puerto Princesa.

Before we start looking TOO deep for connections, it might be good to temper our searches with the possibility that Lorraine used a topographical map of Puerto Princesa solely because it was a place she was familiar with, was readily at hand, and was obscure enough to make for useful concept art. For all we know, the reason we see some differences in the Wikipedia topographical map and the Destiny Map are because Lorraine used her OWN topographical map pulled off her wall or something as source material, not one pulled off the internet. In fact, my dad has an extremely similar topographical map of his hometown in Maine framed and hung on the wall of his house. It's not uncommon.

Unfortunate as it may seem, in light of this development, I think we have to face the possibility that the details and history of the Destiny Map have nothing to do with the eventual, actual game ;-)

Wow.. this is.. very impressive. I never would have thought to piece all those fragments together, let alone believe they meant something.

I'd imagine Puerta Princesca is for the concept art of the game though. It'd be very odd for "See you Starside" to really mean "see you in the Philippines". Much like Halo was basically inspired by Earth landmarks, these islands most likely inspire Destiny.

Why did I just read that? The magic is gone now, way to kill it foman! Damn I knew I should have ignored your post but I just couldn't do it. Well I guess we still don't really know how relevant that map is with the game. I guess we can still dream. At least now I don't feel like I need to study Puerto Princesa.

It seems a bit silly to have your fictional land mass (of whatever kind) to be based so exactly and specifically on that of an actual one. A continent on a new planet in the exact shape of Australia. A new found island with the same outline as Hawaii. Or even an alien city with the same layout as NYC.

It just hits too close to, well, literally, "home", and breaks a bit of the 4th wall and with that game emergence. Unless of course this is a useless map about nothing, in which case shame on them for clearly hinting it's more than it is. That was stupid.

Posted by: x Foman123 xWhilst an unfortunate possibility, the flip side is that mehve may have suggested the location to be used in the game. Or perhaps it was already being considered and mehve had a good insight for the location, so used the map as a basis.

It may even be that Puerto Princesa acts as a strong basis for the fictional-world in terms of inspiration (visually and story-wise) and this is a hint to what's to come. We know that Bungie's crafting the world themselves using Groknok, so you may even say that this location acts as a template of sorts.

It was used, it was cleared, it was slapped onto every piece of subliminal marketing for the game to-date. It has to have some sort of importance or symbolism. I'm confident of that much.

This certainly does throw a spanner in the works. Hard to tell. Just another layer of mystery, I suppose. Only way we'd know for sure is if we were to ask her of her intentions with the map; doubtful she'd answer non-vaguely, though.
