Haters are going to hate.
Praisers are going to praise.

The Bungie Forums are what keeps my mind sharp and my fingers active, between writing my own movie scripts, drawing, and studying industrial design. At the moment I'm working on miniatures for a short movie that I'll hopefully be able to film once I've saved up for a camera... That's me, with the mug, trying to have a conversation with Konoko.

It seems a bit silly to have your fictional land mass (of whatever kind) to be based so exactly and specifically on that of an actual one. A continent on a new planet in the exact shape of Australia. A new found island with the same outline as Hawaii. Or even an alien city with the same layout as NYC.

It just hits too close to, well, literally, "home", and breaks a bit of the 4th wall and with that game emergence. Unless of course this is a useless map about nothing, in which case shame on them for clearly hinting it's more than it is. That was stupid.
I think it all depends on what Earth means to Destiny. If Earth is of any significance to the story/setting/premise, that part of earth might have something to do with it.

It is possible that it's just a template for a starmap, but on the other hand, why not just draw something random if its similarity to an actual location isn't supposed to be a clue? Bungie fans expect clues, and finding a meta clue, an easter egg, would just be conusing. Something I believe Bungie are aware of.

So I'm going to say the opposite.. :P Before we start looking TOO deep for contradictions.. it might be good to temper our searches with the possibility that Earth, and that specific location, might actually have something to do with Destiny.

But what would that be?

Ideas:
In Destiny parts of Earth are recreated somewhere else.
Something of significance is located on that peninsula/island.
Idk.. You probably have some examples of your own.

Do we have anything else to go on?Posted by: CoRaMo
I believe this dramatically increases the chances of pirates being in the game. Maybe there will be a Crimson: Steam Pirates easter egg/cameo/crossover?

edit: That place has an underground river. Wasn't there mention of a river and giant spiders in the last Mail sack?

edit2: Here we are:
"We have a lot of potential to put spiders on the other side of that river. And I am committed to delivering on that potential."
Tyson Green
This makes me believe there are other clues buried within the seemingly meaningless--and possibly distracting--questions and answers of the Mailsack...

Roll with the hits, not under them.

No, you can't have it. But thanks for asking!

Can we say space port? Maybe it's just me, but I don't necessarily think that the artist's possible connection to the Philippines is reason enough to totally discount that this may not have just been source material as opposed to a relevant piece of the pie. Personally, it makes sense to me to have a space port take place near the sea. There's hydrostatic power on hand for the massive power generation needed to run such a port, there's the classical aspect of having trade come in to a sea port, and then there's the practical aspect of the latitude.

Either case, it's a brilliant find. This community never fails to amaze me with how much awesome it contains.

Unfortunate as it may seem, in light of this development, I think we have to face the possibility that the details and history of the Destiny Map have nothing to do with the eventual, actual game ;-)

Well thanks, Buzz Killington.

Honestly though, I though about this too... but it's more fun to assume it's related.

Haha; well like I said, it's just one possibility among many others. Didn't want to kill anybody's buzz, but I did want to raise the issue before people start saying things like "confirmed: Bungie's next game takes place in the Philippines."

Obviously I agree that Puerto Princesa could be a major part of the actual game, either in terms of the land's topography making it into a fictional planet or city, or in terms of it being an actual location that figures into the game (like "New" Mombasa in Halo).

But at the same time that we get excited about that, let's not forget that concept art is just that -- it is not necessarily bound to be placed in the game. Just flip through (or do a Google search for) concept art for the previous Halo games and look at how much stuff never made it into the games.

Unfortunately, knowing next-to-nothing about Destiny, it's really, really hard at this point to even LEAN one way or the other on what we think this really means. All we have are possibilities and speculation based on a few vague pieces of artwork and other documents. Which, I suppose, in a lot of ways, makes it both frustrating and exciting :-D

How heck, thats crazy.. but pretty awesome too. Maybe it's another game based in Earth's future again?

If Puerto Princesa is actually relevant it seems likely that it will be in the future, given Bungie's insistence on referencing space.

I would think so. It's one of the things that made Halo really relate-able for me. It also provides a familiar starting point to their new universe. We may not live in the Philippines or know much about it, but it's still earth.

We should know better, because we are better.

Looking at the overlay, it looks almost like the coast line was eroded between the two pictures. Far future maybe?

Well I think more than likely there's discrepancy between the 1913 sketch of the area, and the actual satellite imagery.

Also, I didn't get the overlay stitched on perfectly.

Way to just crap on this whole thing, Foman.

These kids are just trying to have some fun, but I guess that's just too much for you, isn't it? I suppose you'd rather them be out on the streets smoking the crack and being with prostitutes? Sickening. Here they are looking to uncover a mystery behind a game they're looking forward to, that's being developed by a developer they admire, and you chime in with your filth just hoping to crush them all. Absolutely sickening.

Good work to all. And to Motarius1, I say damn fine detective work! Your efforts may not be appreciated by Foman, but they are by me!

Today I'm proud to be a member of the Bungie community!

What becomes an easter egg exactly? This thread? Motarius1's "Well hello Shirley" post?

I could see this happening, but I think Bungie will through a bigger "Community" Easter Egg into Destiny.

I broke one of the cords for my X11s because I couldn't get past the final American course in Doritos Crash Course.

The fact the graphic designer is from the Philippines makes me think that maybe it was just used as reference material.
Although she did keep 'Triple Top Range' and 'Village Range' in there, but kind of blurred too.

Either she wanted to keep it in there, but not too obvious. Or she didn't want it in there and thought blurring it slightly was enough. Which basically means Im still undecided.

'Puerto Princesa' has also been changed to Puerto Drin, again this is confusing.
Not sure if it was kept in on purpose and changed slightly as a subtle clue. Or it was changed to completely disassociate it from any real world place.

Comparing the image with the high-res 1904 map answers some questions but raises more. It's clear that the there is a marking just below the curved part of the P in Princesa. It's plausible that due to the resolution changes the P ended up looking like a D.

What disturbs me is the subtle darkening around the label of 'Puerto Princesa'. In the 1904 version of the map the label is against a flat background and there's no way to explain the contrast gradient around the label with out deliberate intervention.
