Subject: Are threads sponsoring donations for cancer allowed?

My friend became a participant of the St. Baldrick's cancer donation fund. He is trying to raise $1000 and that $1000 along with his long locks of hair will be going to cancer and cancer patient(s), respectively.

I was merely wondering if a simple link to help out this campaign out would be allowed by the Ninjas/the site. I PM'd a ninja earlier but got no reply, but it's not a problem, there's always the forum. Thanks for any and all help.

Why are you reading my signature? Who actually opens these things and reads them!

And as always, SEND ME A PM. Please. Or really bad things will happen to you.

You have cleverly shot through a loop hole in the system. Tread carefully, my friend.

If it's for a legitimate cause, I don't see why not.

Do not use the public forums to run contests, solicit donations, barter or sell items/services, or advertise anything at all (except on-topic posts in the Classifieds forum). It was only upon reading this that I felt the need to ask a ninja/this forum. It's legitimate cause and he's even almost reached his goal. So, I was wondering if it would be allowed in this case.

Seems fair to me.

Key

Takes a real -blam!- to lock a thread like that. Don't do it while 'Cam is online and you should be fine.

  • 12.05.2011 8:23 PM PDT

Have you seen my mind anywhere? I seem to have lost it...

0x0 x0x 0x0 000 000 x0x 000
x0x 0x0 0x0 0xx 000 0x0 000
x0x x0x x00 0xx 0x0 x0x 0x0

I have seen you future

While it is technically against the rules I hope that you can get an exception for you thread.

  • 12.05.2011 8:30 PM PDT

Cam wouldn't lock that thread. He's a nice dude. I dunno, OP; I'd PM someone for clarification.

EDIT: Oh, yeah, acn's right; you can't solicit donations. I'd still PM someone, although probably not.

Now, in the quantum moment before the closure, when all become one. One moment left. One point of space and time.

I know who you are.

You are Destiny.

Threads like that are "serious ToC/CoC violations," which fall under: "do not use the public forums to ... solicit donations." Even if it's for a good cause, I doubt it would go unhandled.

  • 12.05.2011 8:36 PM PDT

There are threads like that every day or two. Though donating to charity is a good thing, I would prefer if only official stuff was populating the forums. Not because I don't feel for cancer patients, but because almost everything could be for charity.

Letting too many things slip opens up the forums to people selling Girlscout cookies and Miller Highlife, since both donate to charity.

Mmmm.....Miller Highlife...

I guess the only reason why they wouldn't want you to do this is because they have no way to verify who you are. While I am sure you are doing this for a good cause, there are plenty of scumbags out there who would be happy to claim to raise money for St. Baldricks while actually pocketing it.

Unless it's endorsed by Bungie, then no. The rule is clear.

What did I do? I don't remember locking anything like that before, so I don't know why I was singled out.

As Daz said, its technically against the rules, so I wouldn't make one. Bungie themselves might take an interest though, so I'd hold out until/if you get an official answer from them.

Passing the buck.

I do belive that if you're going to point the finger for moderators in the 'locking threads promoting a good cause' camp, there are far more worthy candidates.

Though you are correct in your assessment of the sort of character that would do such a thing, and in general I think the OP would be fine.

Thanks again cam, where's DeeJ when you need him... ;)

I lol'd at the absurd miscommunication that occurs whenever dibbs post something. Perhaps his brain is so highly evolved that he can no longer clearly communicate with lesser life forms, even among his own species.

Why would I want to donate for cancer? That's horrible.

Really? Him? Out of all the mods, he's the one who would unjustly lock a thread?

I mean, come on. There's so many mods who do lock, warn, and ban for things other mods do themselves. But Evilcam really isn't one of them.

Bungie could officially sponsor one of the bigger charitable organiztion for each cause and host events for donations for these groups, and thus we do not need to advertise these and feel -blam!- about ourselves for having to lock a thread becauase the potential risk it could create later as noted above.

This thread would have appealed to me more if it was written with crayons.

I broke one of the cords for my X11s because I couldn't get past the final American course in Doritos Crash Course.

I've seen it been done before, the thread was constantly being locked and unlocked, a poop storm ensued.

Nope.

People have been permabanned in the past for trying to solicit over Bnet. I'll bet they will continue too in the future.

The only time it is allowed is if the link provided in made in gold.
