I have friend who is wondering what the Quadro FX graphics are for and if they are good for gaming.

I told him that i don't think that they are used for gaming.

So my question is what are they used for?

No, the quadro fx series are for workstations, kinda like digital video/photo editing, rendering, basically art kinda stuff. A 7800GTX beats a quardro FX4500 in any gaming benchmark. The architecture is just not designed to handle gaming. A 7800GTX costs $300-400, and a quadro fx FX4500 costs $1800.

Yeah, basically the nVidia Quadro, ATi FireGL, and 3D Labs Wildcat series are built for workstations for everything from video to 3D. I've got a dual opteron system with a Wildcat 6110 in it - great for 3DS Max, but it actually can't play games.

There are numerous ways to flash certain GeForce card BIOS'es to Quadro BIOS'es. Definately saves a good chunk of cash, though the performance isn't perfect.

On the high end models its the actual architecture thats different. Your not paying $1200 more for just a bios that enables parts of the card.

I dont think he means it cant play games at all, just not well. GPU's have different architecture, more transistors and stuff are being added to smaller spaces making them able to compute much higher amounts of information in the same amount of time. Think of them like car engines. Better engines enable the car to go faster, just like better gpu's enable the computer to process graphics faster.

Workstation gpu's like the quardro fx and fire gl cards are made differently than gaming gpu's. I dont know what they do differently in the architecture, but all I can say is they do theyre job much better than gaming cards. Colors are more vibrant, very sharp and crisp images result, as well as strong processing power for 3d design.
