Subject: Halo Glasslands' Mk. VII armor --> RPG gameplay in Halo 4?

Oops. I think I just lost your mind.

Halo Glasslands' Mk. VII armor's most distinguishing feature is its self-repair and *self-upgrading* feature (based on nanites). While this is interesting fiction, I believe its purpose will also serve to change the gameplay of the series. Its ability to upgrade itself points to an in-campaign ability to upgrade your own capabilities - like an RPG.

Any thoughts on this?
Plausible or no?
Good or bad?

Totaly agree. That bean and cheese was way better the first time!

Not saying that it should be this way.
I'm saying there is a reason 343 introduced this in the book, because they want to have us spend points to upgrade health, shields, resist recoil, melee more powerfully, and run faster.
For example.

A good hint in that direction.

I'd like to see a classic playlist and a customised playlist if this is true.

If the armour is customisable then the weapons should be too.

Remember that leak claiming "AIM = arsenal improvisation mechanic" was a new feature?
Not saying I believe it, BUT.
Remember what we said about the Tom Morello pictures.

But they were obviously real. A random article is questionable.

Yes I do know that article. It's certainly a plausible game update and would make Halo unique again.

I'd like to see how it pans out gameplay wise.

We are all going to get banned aren't we?

The only flaw is that chief is still wearing Mark VI which has limited nanotech.

Applying RPG elements to the traditionally strict canon of Halo would DESTROY the canon so fat.

This made me laugh...

Heresy! Remove this filth!

But to be honest, adding a central gameplay mechanic will probably alienate A LOT of fans, though I don't particularly mind.

  • 12.07.2011 12:59 AM PDT

RPG gameplay would be impossible in Halo 4, since from the beginning we know the identity of the character we will be playing as. Unless 343 pulls something out of their ass at the last minute that nobody will see coming. Plot twist anyone? Wait. Halo? Plot-twists? DOES NOT COMPUTE!

I DO have time to bleed...i just dont want to.

ign said that halo 4 will be using a modifyed reach engine... thats when i started hating ign and i dont belive anything they say anymore.

it would be a cool idea but if it is going to happen i hope its in campaign only, it could be like starwars repuplic comando style wep "customisation"

And this is a modified version of
this

When you take into account that CoD's engine is a stripped down and modified version of a decade+ old engine, CoD's graphics are glorious. "Modified" therefore could essentially ammount to "brand new engine" as far as graphical fidelity goes. Don't worry about it.

OT: I really like this idea a lot. It'd be strictly campaign or select multiplayer games of course, but I really like it.

So long as we can have vanilla Halo alongside the toppings, I'm fine with that.

If you want to get technical about it you could say that Halo Reach's engine is a heavily modified version of the Halo 1 or Halo 2 engine as there is code in it that dates back to those games.

As far as adding RPG elements, I could see this. Not sure if it would apply to only single player, only multiplayer or if they'd try to integrate it into both (I'd guess both, but who knows), but for single player they would need to find a way to get Chief into Mark VII armor (and with all the talk of his different armor having a story explanation, I'd assume they do somehow, maybe just not as soon as the teaser would make it seem). It's something I'd like to see. Even though they are carrying on the same game series, it'd be pretty hackneyed for 343 to just copy everything Bungie has done and not try to put their own stamp on it and create something unique. Halo can either stagnate and stay the same, or be relevant and try to push the genre forward and maybe even innovate a bit, or if not innovate in the genre, at LEAST push ITSELF forward.

If you're ever going to introduce somewhat larger changes to the formula of an established series to keep it fresh and relevant, starting what they consider a new trilogy, done by a new developer is probaby the best time to do it.

@accordingto343

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

I don't even think Mk.VI has nanotech. Mk.VII does, but how and where Chief will get it on a Forerunner sphere is beyond me.

It does cobra but a limited amount/version it was stated in the same section about MARK VII having nano tech.

Take what you can, give nothing back

--Fyrestarter

I couldn't imagine Halo as an RPG. Personally I feel that the FPS represents and carries out everything that Halo is. If it happens, I'll more than likely play it though....

  • 12.07.2011 6:57 AM PDT

Waypoint Moderators aren't really Moderators, just power hungry and its goal is defend their beloved Halo at all costs. (Meaning that they wank Halo too much.)

BS Angel is alleged foe so, be wary of Waypoint and its moderators! Do not attempt to move to Waypoint. Enter your own risk.

*WARNING* IT IS MY OPINION.

It would be acceptable if it is similar to Crysis 2 where you can upgrade your armor perks like speed, armor (health) and shields due to nanotechnology.

Also same thing goes for weapons too.

I'd like to see it setup in campaign of course but for multiplayer they could just use different playlists. A classic and an AIM playlist. Simple.

I think it sounds to me like that's what the OP is saying, it'd definitely be interesting, doubt it'd really work very well (if at all) in multi-player, but it'd definitely be something cool for Campaign and/or Firefight or integrated in some way into a multi-player feature like Invasion.
