Subject: The Fist, The Lightning, And The 7th Column---Meanings.

Spread the love...

I was wondering what each of these means, so I tried to do a bit of deep thinking. Tell me if I'm wrong;

The Fist
Quote on quote from Wikipedia, "The raised fist (also known as the clenched fist) is a symbol of solidarity and support. It is also used as a salute to express unity, strength, defiance, or resistance." That seems pretty easy to understand. It's supposed to show how we, the Community, have to unify and work together.

The Lightning
This I'm having some trouble with. So lighting is normally something used to show fear (in horror movies) or power. I don't know why Bungie would try to scare us, so I'm assuming it shows power. And also seeing as the Fist is holding the Lightning, I'm assuming it shows that if we, the Community, unify and work together then we will achieve great power.

The 7th Column
This one, although seemingly simple, is actually pretty complicated. It shows 6 rectangles pointing out, with a 7th one that is unconnected and is pointing up. So, does this mean that we (the Community) are the Seventh Column? If so, then it shows that we are the balance and that without us the "structure" would fall. However, one could look at this from a different point of view. They could say that each Column is a specific part of the Community. Something like; our love, criticism, feedback, e.t.c. Yet another possibility is that the 7 rectangles each represent a part of the Plan for World Domination. The last rectangle, which is unattached, could represent the last step that could be completed with our (the Community) help. Pretty complicated.

Yeah, pretty deep. So do you think I'm right, or completely wrong? Feel free to post your own ideas on what each symbol means!

EDIT: Community Thoughts (not mine!)
-Fist is also symbol of Anarchy
-Lightning could hint towards Greek or Norse mythology
-7th Column could show that the Community is the foundation, and Bungie the leader
-Lightning representing immortality

It's the symbol of anarchy, so... I'm not sure on that one...

Lightning by itself may mean fear, but lightning clenched in a fist alludes to the greek god Zeus. This appears to imply that bungie is either 1) Really powerful, 2) The king of the game developers (Zeus = King of the gods) or 3) Bungie will rule the world. Probably all three.

  • 12.07.2011 3:50 PM PDT

I always assumed that the 7th Column was an allusion to Urk's forbidden love.

Wow, I'm so stupid. I totally forgot about the Greeks, and I pride myself on my knowledge of Greek Mythology!

The fist seems pretty well thought out.

The lighting in my opinion always signified the raw energy that Bungie puts into every part of their company.

Finally, The 7th Column in my opinion signifies us (the community being the foundation) and Bungie (the leading rectangle).

Because without a foundation i.e. customers and fans, Bungie could not exist. And without a leader, we the community could not progress.

Or something to that extent.

I would also look into lightning in Norse mythology. Certainly lots of Bungie lore comes from Norse stuff, and it's a pretty safe bet that Norse stuff is the most heavily drawn upon mythos at Bungie (certainly not too much Greek stuff).

Yeah, this is good Community thinking. I'll add a section to the OP for "community thoughts".

The 7th Column
So, does this mean that we (the Community) are the Seventh Column?

I think Bungie told us this a while back.

Case and point: don't worry about it. Girls start getting boobies pretty soon, and then you'll have plenty of other things to think about. Being an Inheritor is not a life goal.

Well I think everybody knew that a long time ago, but the question is, what do the symbol and name mean? Knowing that we are called that is not the same as knowing why we are called that.
