Here's what I think about this contest:

-It's a GREAT idea.

-It would become even a BETTER idea if cash prizes were announced BEFORE people started their compositions.

-It would become an EPIC idea if Bungie used the winning piece to either use in a videogame, or on a sound track (in which case, the winner would have to send a copy of the full score upon finding out that his/her piece won).

For those of you who spent hours in organizing this contest, wouldn't it be really smart to try to convince Bungie to use the winning piece in a videogame or in a Halo soundtrack in order to boost this competition's integrity and popularity?

Please just TRY to convince Bungie, that the best way to please Bungie fans is to have Bungie fans REPRESENTED in a videogame/soundtrack. After all, you spent so much effort into organizing it for the fans of Bungie and Halo, so why not put in a little more effort, and push this competition to a whole new level.

I can understand your first point about the prize. However, i can assure you, Bungie will not use music you've made due to all kinds of crazy legal reasons and to be honest, it's not worth the effort trying to convince their and Microsoft's lawyers.

I'm confused with all the link problems... I'm using Firefox, so maybe it's an IE issue? And to clarify, before we could not use the real notes, but now we can? (I'm not talking about samples, I mean actually playing or writing in the notation.)

I dont want to make this thing too strict. I'm allowing people to use small bits from the actual music, just nothing huge. Keep it to a very, very small bit.

Oh my goodness. What an opportunity. I am only fifteen years old, and I've only written two (good) songs, and arranged March of the Ents from LOTR by Howard Shore, but they were all string quintets... I don't know much about brass and such.... Surely, though, this will require a full orchestra piece. I am only a s'more in high school, and know strings... but I can make an attempt... you see, I have really good ears, and one would not expect it from a fifteen year old, but my songs sounded really good (judged by my former orchestra teacher). So, I've never done anything with brass or winds or percussion, but I'm extremely excited for this opportunity, and can't wait to at least try.
You guys are freakin' awesome.

I am slightly confused on one point. Does the music have to include themes from a Bungie game, or can it be completely original, and even perhaps until now an unrelated work?

Ex: I am writing a fugue for viola, cello, bass and it is completely original and is unrelated to Bungie . Could I enter that? I would give it a Bungie appropriate name, of course, but there will be no connection with any pfhormer Bungie game music .
---------------

I also have a question for any finale or music software people in general. I am poor so I only have finale notepad '06. Does anyone have the real copy of finale 06, and would they let me email them my piece and make a midi recording of it for me? Also, does anyone know how to make a midi into a mp3?

Okay, I have a small sketch ready. All I do is play piano. I have only had four years of it and am not at all music oriented but I thought I would give it a go. If you want to listen to my sketch, it is here. I was wondering if someone who liked it and was good at developing pieces with other instruments and stuff could help me or we could work together and split prize or whatever. http://midishrine.com/midi/5596.mid

I have been here a lot longer than what it says. For some reason it would always ask me to make a new account rather than log in. I stopped trying over a year ago. Low and behold I come to the site today and see this contest. Again it asks me to make an account instead of logging in. This time it allows me to create my original name instead of saying the name was already in use. Ive been apart of this site since well before bungie.net was remade around halo2. I remember posting on 7th column when it was brown. I dont know if Im going to participate in this as time is a hard thing to come by but if I do I dont want any trouble saying I reged today. I have been a member for a long long time.

I'm going to be modifying some of the rules tomorrow. Dont worry Krekc, you'll be able to participate tomorrow after I modify the rules to be just a little less strict.

This contest will end in a month. You have to have your submission emailed to the account stated above before 12AM June 5 2006.

You should have enough time.

Schnikees, a month? Ok, Ill have to get on my horse then. Even though a month is a decent amount of time it happens to land right smack in the middle of my volleyball season with my kids. Well, Ill just have to set aside some time for this. Good idea btw. I had an idea when Halo2 came out on the ign music boards for a remix contest with anything halo. I didnt get any takers. This will be fun though.

I own a program called Acid Pro 4, you can check the stuff out here: www.acidplanet.com. But it's a loop-based program. I have downloaded others' royalty free loops, but I was wondering if that would still pose a problem.

In other words, am I allowed to use loops to mix a song?

LOL! I'm invisible aren't I? haha. But seriously, I would like an answer sometime this year...

Sorry for the delay. Alright, so from what I understand, you want to use loops from the music that other people has made? If that is what you're saying, then no. I went to the original post and edited it. You are now allowed to submit as many entries as you want! Remember to type a short description of the inspiration for all of your submissions. Another rule that I altered was "Participants must be a member of B.net prior to the start of the contest." The reason for why I removed this rule completely was that it made the contest just a little too strict and was unfair to all the member joining the website. The sponsor of this contest, AKA kd5shw has announced the amount of money he's willing to give to the first place winner. $25 will be given out to whoever wins this contest. So make sure you keep'em coming and enjoy the contest!

June 5th? Awesome, thanks for the help... I was worried, because I've got to get ready for exams, and I'm also playing piano for my cousin's wedding in 10 days... gotta practice for that. I was also pretty scared that I only finished ten measures last night. I swear, though, those are some awesome ten measures. Well, I'm pretty sure that will give me enough time, if I use it wisely.

Nice Idea. Thanks for the info.

Cheers.

hmmmmmm...$25 bucks u say?

no offense, but i dont like where this competition going- because its not really going ANYwhere.

Ive written 90 measures already, taking about 8 hours to do so. and now i figure out that the winning piece doesn't get to be used by Bungie, AND the winner only gets $25 dollars for putting in about 10-15 hours of hard work on a composition- that is, IF you WIN.

Sounds pretty weak to me (i was hoping this competition would be a little bigger, meaning more money, or more recognition for the winner).

There is one thing that i would still love to see happen to the winning piece, and this DOESN'T include putting the piece into a Bungie game, so please read on:

The winning piece should be posted on Bungie.net, so the people who took part in this contest can hear the winning piece. This would be a great conclusion to the contest.

Hell I could care less about the cash. 25 bones is 25 bones. If you dont think its enough then simply dont enter. Every remix contest Ive been in theres been no cash involved. I dont even think the NiN contest had a cash award.

Ok, that's chill, because I've been a b.net member since early 2004 and it deletes my account every other month or so.

And I don't know if this has already been answered, but will you post, say, the top 10 entries simply for the listening enjoyment of others?

I'm thinking of posting the top 3 entries and then some just for the listening pleasures. I'll let the judges make the final decision on that though.

I'd say for now, we stick to the top three. If we can find someone who is willing to host more say the top 10 or something, then that's even better.

I assure you, we understand the amount of work you put in (since we do composing ourselves) so we really do sympathise with you. Hopefully for next time, we will be able to make all our competitions bigger and better with subsequently better prizes.
