Seventh Column Contests

After a month or two of organisation, we have finally done it! Seventh Column Contests proudly presents the Bungie Music Contest - an oppurtunity for fans of Bungie and Marty's work to come and demonstrate their own musical talents, competing against each other. Eventhough I helped with the organisation, this idea was created by Butane who also created the group in which we organised all of this. The person who sponsored this contest is kd5shw who's generously giving cash prizes in the form of check/pay pal. There will be only two members who are going to judge this contest, they are: Tazmaniandude and Gods Prophet. So, with that said, here are the rules:

* You are allowed to use a small bit from the actual music but keep that to a very minimum.
* Submissions will be about Bungie, any submissions disreguarding this rule will be ignored. Music must be in the style of a videogame. The submission should be able to be used in a Bungie game. (i.e. it shouldn't sound like you just slapped it in there in order to enter).
* All file formats should be in mp3.
* All entries must be prefaced with a short description of the inspiration for your piece. This is used so that the audience knows what the piece is about, and also understands its relation to Bungie.
* You are to submit the entry at: 7thColumnContests@gmail.com
* Send all entries to 7thcolumncontests@gmail.com with the subject "music contest".
* No plagerism
* Do not use pirated or in any other way, illegal software to produce music.
* All times are in Pacific Standard Time. Also known as B.net time.
* This contest will end in a month. You have to have your submission emailed to the account stated above before 12AM June 5 2006.
* Winner of this contest will recive a $25 in the form of either a check or pay pal.

If you have anymore questions, ask'em here and some one will answer them. Thanks for reading, and good luck!

EDIT: Please take note. This is a contest that is run by fans. All the submission will NOT be included in the next Bungie game because it's not run by Bungie.

Say I (and a friend) created a piece for a project which remains work-in-progress. Would that be an acceptable submission?

Is it related to Bungie? If so, then most likely yes.

Looks good guys. If i manage to get some sort of musical ability or editing software over the next week or two, i will enter.

Does Bungie have a preference to what different musical instruments should be included in the composition?

I'm seriously considering entering this tournament. I've been writing music since around 6th or 7th grade, and i have 8 compositions done up to date (none of these 8 compositions sound like videogame music, so i will obviously start a new composition).

Any instruments will really do. Generally, the music in Halo is played with Violins, drums, and there is alot of monk/who the hell knows chanting/singing/whatever.
As long as it bares resemblance to other Bungie music work then it should be fine.

Oh, and sorry, but i can't be bothered mailing this...

If at any time within the next two weeks i am not editing my xbox site or my halo 2 site or not doing chores AND my xbox 360 breaks while i have a sudden inspiration of musical talent besides rap then i guess i could and might enter...

Ah, look at the lonely people...

This brings to mind Mothergoat's "The Prisoner". For those of you who have heard it, would something like that be an acceptable entry? Basically, it's a song based off of the melody from "Unforgotten" from the Vol. 2 soundtrack.

This is a contest that is run by fans. You can use any instruments as long as it comes out bungie related. It'll be consider Bungie related if the music is somewhat related or sounds like a soundtrack from one of the games.

I own a program called Acid Pro 4, you can check the stuff out here: www.acidplanet.com. But it's a loop-based program. I have downloaded others' royalty free loops, but I was wondering if that would still pose a problem.

This sounds fun. I'll go ahead and compose something Halo-inspired at the end of this semester when I'm not so busy.

i have a software called Finale Notepad. it works great, except the electric guitars sound like crap. would this affect my chances of winning?

Also- do i need to send ONLY an MP3, or am i supposed to send a copy of the full score as well?

Also the AR is actually good in CQB now and no longer a glorified baseball bat.

You might want to edit your post to clarify the point about it being able to be used in a Bungie game. I was playing Halo 2 earlier and one of the guys on my team was talking about it and he thought that the winning piece would be used in a Bungie game.

Yea, im wondering the same thing...does the winning piece make an appearance on halo3? If not, does it make an appearance in a different bungie game?

One more question- if the winning piece makes an appearance in a videogame, does the winning composer's name get mentioned in the credits?

PLEASE say YES...

I know I'm not officially involved in the contest, but I'll clarify a few things regardless (I know enough from the organisers).

You don't have to send in the full score (or any bits of the score - you won't be marked down or up on account of it, and it probably won't even be looked at), just the MP3.

Furthermore, as the contest is being undertaken by Bungie fans, with no official link to or support from Bungie, the piece will almost certainly not be included in any future games. The concept is that the piece should be suitable for inclusion in a game (thereby making it appropriate in a "Bungie" music contest). Of course, nobody is to speak for Bungie but Bungie, but I'm sure I've seen somewhere that they do not accept third-party submissions. Nothing can be said for certain on that matter.

All of this has been set up by fans; in no way is Bungie involved with the orginization or prizes of this contest. So no, this is just for fun.

-Can we use the actual Halo chords and note sequences (not samples)?
-I've written dozens of tunes, many of which are Halo-inspired, many of which are for independent mods... can those be entered if they are affiliated with another project?
-Why only one entry??
-How much money is the top prize?

Thanks guys, great idea!

It shouldn't affect your chances. All the judges know what they're doing.

Using the actual Halo chords is not allowed, you can get pretty close though.

-I've written dozens of tunes, many of which are Halo-inspired, many of which are for independent mods... can those be entered if they are affiliated with another project?
Hmm, affiliated with another project? If it sounds like it can be used in a game Bungie has already made, then yeah. It has to be somewhat Bungie related.

-Why only one entry??
Because we dont want people to flood the email account with dozens of submissions :). Besides, one entry should be enough.

-How much money is the top prize?
The winner gets cash, we havn't announced how much.

Tell me if I misunderstood you on one of these questions.

He means if the track is being used in another project, such as a mod for UT or whatever. There's no real problem with that unless any members of the project object.
