Nobody would be able to block ken.

Yes; I see where you are coming from. People would no doubt block ken simply because they are jackasses and cannot prevent themselves from being rude to him. Honestly, Apoc, if you can't just ignore ken manually, then clearly you deserve the ban.

Then they lose out, not Ken, if they're going to block him with no real implication other than they dislike him then chances are they weren't going to discuss anything with him anyway nor care what he said. Such a system rewards those who chose to exercise control and wish to participate openly in the community.

Edit: And if it helps a few people control their posting habits to and prevents them from flaming, then all the better. Keeps it off the forums.

So if for example again I don't want to see this. I'm a jackass? If I don't want to come to Bungie.net to sift through garbage to get to gems of threads, I'm a jackass.

Ok I'm a jackass.

The problem here is that people would block ken because they are immature and then ken would be left out from many discussions as a result. If too many people block him, he will be invisible, essentially.

Why is everyone focusing this just on Ken? Everyone has people they do not want to see post? People would wanna block me! I don't care, if they don't find my contributions/content to their liking then I wouldn't mind them filtering their experience.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I think people should just learn self control. You can simply not reply to a topic if you wish but completely censoring someone you don't like for personal reasons is a tad extreme.

There are some people here that annoy me but I would NEVER do that to them.

Becuase, we are all having a discussion. If I lose out in part of the discussion, I can't function in the discussion. it won't work.

I can see this "feature" being abused and I can see all the problems it would cause and a division occur in the community forum. I can also see people like myself leaving Bungie.net forever becuase so many people censor them for no reason that he or she can no longer participate in the forums becuase no one will see what they have to say or the topics they make.

The reason this was proposed is a personal attack on certain users abilities to post on Bungie.net. It is not for the benefit of the site, it is to help a select few group of members in silencing people in the community.

We are focusing on ken because he would wind up being the most commonly blocked user.

I would like to point out Apoc that all those threads were made weeks apart and were boosted by a troll. I would never make all those threads in one day.

What I said can apply to anyone, everyone just happened to be whiteknighting for Ken so it was easier just to use him as an example. But I actually agree with you, there have been plenty of instances where I have wanted to block many users. Hell I'm sure I'd be blocked to and I champion the idea of user self moderation. I'm all about creating a greater user experience while limiting exposure to spam, flaming, trolls, etc.

Exactly, a troll which could have been thrown on the ignore wagon.

Key

1. Stop being off-topic. You lot are derailing the thread.

2. Do you really want to interact with people who dislike you so much that they'd block you, ken?

It is not even that, it was I was mentioned when this feature was being brought up in this thread and that makes ME feel threatened as a user to think that people want to silence me on the forums.

I feel threatened and a little offended, I try to be a reasonable person, I like this site, I think of many people here as equals.

I am worried that if this feature is made, It would hinder my ability to be active on this site along with many other people the community "disagrees" with will essentially be in a PERMA BAN LIMBO, unable to post but no one can see them, forever.

EDIT: Yes, ken, I know, and it's been shown before when Apoc made a damn script to block your posts. That was rather funny, actually, but still dripping with jackassery.

Your right, this thread has gone off to a totally different thing. I am going to continue the moderation discussion becuase I did not derail this thread.

But I like our current moderation system and I would like more active mods, who are willing to participate in discussion.

I think Cortana 5 might be a good mod, she seems to be pretty active and is knowledgeable in things Bungie related.

There are honestly many good choices for modship.

Yax is a shining beacon in these dark times. You should all strive to be more like Yax.

Is that the criteria for being a mod? The only reason people are saying C5 so much is because she is well-known in the Septagon (most long-term members are) and she remains civil in discussions. So people probably see this member that acts nice and has been here for quite awhile and assume that means she'd be a good mod. And all the inside-joke posts regarding forum ninjas and employees she makes probably contributes to that image.

In my opinion, there are tonnes of people that could easily do the job of banning, warning, etc. Even ones that seem like "bad" members could do it. Or the boring ones. I don't think there will ever be a a limitation of possible candidates. That's not why we don't have more mods. I think the real task is finding a member that doesn't just blindly ban according to the rules, thinks for himself, and is actually interesting.

I bet you could give the ninjas a week to discuss it in HFCS and they could come out with as many as ten new moderators.

I think the point I'm trying to make is being capable of wielding the banhammer is probably the easiest trait to find when looking for mods.

I hope it isn't though, because I wrote quite a lot and that point is stupid. Useless posts = Yaxy beddy time.

Night Ken. Sweet dreams. xoxo

Oh God, no.

Wow, a relatively mature discussion right up until page 8/9. I'm actually impressed.

The self censorship idea is actually quite an interesting one, personally i'd like to see a few limited functions added in that regard. Though if i'm not mistaken we can already block users PM'ing us, so surely this function could be extended to hide all posts - aside from those in quotes obviously.

In terms of this discussion a lot of it is redundant, the sites activity is on the wain from my experience and I would suggest that we actually have very good coverage currently and that no one else is required.

Also in my experience, those who are trusted with the tools generally aren't those who are strongly linked with the positions beforehand; and as such I can completely see the next individual; or batch of, moderator(s) being relatively unknown to the community.

  • 12.11.2011 10:42 AM PDT

That'd be cool. From what I understand, the typical story goes like this:

XXX joined after lurking for quite some time. They began posting in the XXX forum, and then, when Halo X was released, moved into the Halo X forum. There, they became well-known by the Community, both for their stimulating discussions and xxx. On MM/DD/YYYY, XXX was promoted to Forum Ninja.
